Splain these bars to me

Saw this dude commuting home the other day.
Looks kinda like aero bars put up at 90 degrees.
Someone got a better explanation?

Extreme take of the Praying Mantis position as popularized by F. Landis, now illegal at UCI level.

Bikes: Some bikes. Hell, they're all the same, ain't they?

At least it looks better than one guy's clip-on aerobars I saw one day. I wish I had a pic; their tips were chest-level, and the guy was sitting almost straight upright, holding the bar ends like they were an airplane yoke. I have no idea what he was thinking or who told him that it was okay.

Aero bars make me LOL. I see a guy all the time with aero bars on his bike. He's pushing 300 lbs and he's always on the bike path. I wanna cheer for him, "YEAH! GO LANCE! LIVE STRONG!".

How the hell does he use them like that? They should be much closer to level. You'd need elbow "cups" instead of pads just to keep from slipping off.

I can imagine that position being positive, as your hands are keeping wind out of your face.

Bolt one of those portable desk tops to that and you can work while riding.

Man, ANYTHING cycling-related that poor man touches gets banned. I bet if he claimed to have a unique pedal stroke, the UCI would ban circular leg movements.

Anyway, I think the aerobars-up position is pretty common when you put aerobars on a road bike and don't make any concessions on fit that would bring them closer to you. The extra hand positions are nice, but it looks a little goofy.

commonly seen around here, and even worse: flip drops 180deg so they point forward like bull horns. *sigh*

I've seen aero bars pointed up on commuter bikes with a headlight on the pointy end.

I love having aero bars on my commuter. That is where I do all my miles

Maybe it's a crash bar for head-on collisions.

It seemed we were both commuting, and yes I was in my truck.
It was a day I had to take the kid to the ranch to clean the goats. so I have to drive.
I do commute about two days a week on average by bike.

I saw something similar yesterday. A guy with clip-on aero bars and a nearly vertical stem. He was riding the hoods and almost fully upright, I don't know what he expects to get out of the aero bars. He didn't look like a commuter, just some chubby dude on a solo ride.

I lawled, but I felt kind of bad afterward

There's a MUP rider around here with a classic 10-speed; his drop bars are: a.)reversed; b.) bar tips pointed STRAIGHT up; and c.) what can only be a section of conduit, bent to attach to each bar tip, and heavily wrapped in duct tape, as high as a set of stingray ape-hangers. He rides absolutely upright.

I've almost hit him 2x on a near-blind corner, because he can barely use the brakes, and DOESN'T pay attention.

Bikes: Tons

Apart from the previous post - in which the guy's setup really made for an unsafe situation - who cares what these people do with their bars? They're riding, ain't they?

Good for you! (Unless of course you're better than me, too.)
