Bikes: Cannondale Synapse '06, Mongoose titanium road bike '00--my commuter. Yes, Mongoose once made a decent ti road bike.

Well, since I begin my workday at 7:00AM, I usually hit the hay at 9 pm'ish. I'm up by 5 and on the road by 6.

I am in bed at 1:00AM on an early night. I picked up a really late schedule in college (3:00AM) and have never quite acclamated to a new schedule.

My most common routine is to bed 11-12PM and up 6-7AM. There have been periods where I've worked nights and swing shift to babysit a troublesome volcano or two, so my sleep schedule has been all over the clock.

I have a 9-5 job, I get up between 6am and 7am without an alarm, leave around 8am. My bedtime is usually between 10pm and 11pm, often earlier during Winter, but never past 11pm, or I miss "my time" and won't be able to fall asleep for hours.

This is a result of my past sleep problems. I had the same problem as some people described above: tossing and turning, thoughts rushing through my head, aware of passing time, often several hours before falling into a shallow sleep. Well, I started looking for help and was diagnosed with anxiety. It took a couple of years of therapy and sleep training, but now I have to maintain relatively steady sleep schedule which comes natural after a while. I can't go to sleep too late and I can't oversleep, I have to be out of bed by 8am the latest, unless I'm sick.

So my point is if you have such sleep issues that they affect your functioning during the day try to find some medical help. Many health insurance plans cover behavioral health problems (sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, anger, etc.). Sometimes you just need to talk to someone and change your habits a bit, sometimes you need meds or both. But if you can it's worth trying. Having a good night sleep can do wonders to your overall health.

And it is beyond my comprehension how some of you commute for 50-60 minutes.

Anyhow I have found if I am in bed by 9:30-10pm, It really helps getting up earlier to bike in to work.

So...what time do you hit the sack?
We modern 'civilized' people sleep goofy hours that are based on a clock instead of a more natural pattern. Go touring for a few weeks and you'll find just how goofy those times are. Out on the road, I'd go to bed about the time the sun goes down. I'd sleep for a few hours, doze lightly around 0300, sleep deeply from 0400 or 0500 and wake up anywhere between 0600 and 0800. It's really refreshing to sleep that way.

At home, I have more of a schedule so I go to bed around 2030 and wake at 0500 to be out the door by 0600. I've been doing this for the better part of 30 years and you get used to it. I also nap at lunch for 10 to 20 minutes. A lot of getting up in the morning is just training. Do it enough and it just becomes routine.

I usually go to bed sometime between 0:00 and 1:00 (read midight and 1 AM). My work schedule is generally 9-5ish, so I generally get up around 7:30 and am on the road by 8:30 or so to get to work around 9.

I know I should go to bed earlier and get a little more sleep, but as much as I like sleep, there are other things I prefer to do w/ my time than just sleep - lately catching up on the day's TdF action on the DVR, which usually has to wait until my wife goes to bed (she's not interested).
