Bikes: Some bikes. Hell, they're all the same, ain't they?
I'd also say to see about the Aurora. I nearly bought an Aurora Elite for myself; the only reason I didn't was most of the purpose would be to get disc brakes for all weather, and I realized that I don't need to ride in all weather conditions.

Glad to hear you've had a chance to try stuff out!
I'd still suggest trying a Specialized Sectuer -

If nothing else, just to see what a "real" road bike is like to ride. Believe me - you may love it, or you might not like it whatsoever, but it would give you an idea which it is. :-D
And I'd try a Crosscheck if you can find one. From what you're saying about wanting something right between those 2 other bikes, it's possible it would be right up your alley.
