I've purchased two BD bikes (Windsor Stratford and Motobecane Fantom 29 comp) and feel they offer an excellent value for money. I'm considering getting one of their titanium bikes at some point.
I think any product that is made overseas and shipped is prone to the risk of damage - that's just a normal risk, and I would think that BD's rate of incidents is no different than other manufacturers.

Exellent experience with Bikes Direct. They sent me a bomb proof bike that was easily assembled. They have a cool line of Motobecane bike clothes too.

I bought a frame from BD. It is the carbon Immortal Spirit. When I bought it I weighed about 300lbs and wanted to try a carbon frame. Figured $500 was a price I could live with if the frame didn't work out. I've had that bike about 5 years now, ride it almost every weekend, and still enjoy it. Down to 240lbs now. Great service and very easy to work with.
I pre-purchased a mountain bike when they came out with a new model. When it looked like I was going to get laid off and needed the money, they refunded it in full when I told them the situation. Not every business will look out for a customer like that.

You get what you pay for. If you're aware of this and are still satisfied with your bikesdirect bike, then you are a rational person. However, if you think you got a better value than with a bike shop bike, you have some explaining to do.

i have close to 3000 miles maybe already have it on my bikes direct Motobecane Fantom CX for commuting. My seat rail snapped a few weeks ago and that is probably because i was picking it up with the seat all the time.
It has been a great bike for the price point.

It's a nice bike. I've been curious, what are your impressions of just the frame and fork? ie, if you were hypothetically building a bike would you have any qualms about choosing them to start with?

My road bike is one of their Titanium bikes. I bought it over two years ago and love it. I replaced the saddle right away and the "ergo" handlebars with compacts within a couple months. One thing failed so far - the seat post clamp so I replaced that. The bolt stripped out.
The frame is made by ORA Engineering in Taiwan. They seem to be a reputable frame builder.

This sort of illustrates my point. Whatever its faults, Schwinn used to stand for quality. People still remember that and I bet when they see the Schwinn name at a Target, it gives them some warm and fuzzies about buying the product. The problem is that the name is used to pedal some of the lowest quality bikes and accessories you can buy.

I just wasted 15 minutes (that I will never get back) because I read your post the wrong way, and was moved to set the record straight. As the late great Emily Litella used to say: "never mind... ..."

Leisesturm, could I have worded it differently so as to not mislead you? Sometimes I'm too terse.

wphamilton mine is an aluminmum bike with a steel fork. I rode my road bike (suposed carbon fork) over the same route a week or so ago and it was bit more bumpy> I am not sure if the size tires make that much of a difference. 23 vs 28. without my rack on the bike it feels pretty light. i did hit my top speed riding the road bike 39.5 but then turned around the next day and did 38.5 with panniers on the fantom. It was not as wobbly as i thought it would be at that kind of speed.
I am going to try bike touring this week with it. i think the frame since cyclocross is a bit more twitchy than the road. I am not sure if the road bike has a longer wheelbase but at speed there is a bit of twitchy. I just lean forward and little and I think it distributes weight better.
my panniers hang of the back and I have never had any problem with feet rubbing or toe overlap.
It has been a reliable and fairly sturdy bike for me thus far.

The difference in feel between 23mm and 28mm is huge for most riders.

I'm thinking about one of those Motobecane Ti road bikes from BD. And yes, I would be happy to pay my LBS to assemble and check the bike. The 2013 Ultegra 10 speed is $1700. A Lynskey Peleton 105 would be over $3k. Used Ti bikes are not that common.

Keep in mind that in the big boys brands, you're paying for the brand label, the color and the markup and promotion costs.
Which have nothing to do with the quality of the bike. You can save $$$$ by buying a bike that's not as prestigious but is better equipped at a given price.

If you don't need or want some or any of that, BD bikes are an excellent deal.

Then again, I can fix and maintain my bikes so that is a factor. Also, from what I read BD isn't bad with CS anymore, very good about replacing things....ect. Still no repair service though, so they will send you a part or replace the bike but you'd have to install parts yourself or pay someone.
I think we all agree that it's hard to beat the components you get with a BD bike but then you are pretty well responsible for your own setup, tune, and repairs. I guess that's what makes it less expensive.
As far as being a better value than a bike from a LBS, if you just lineup component VS component BD is a better value. Not the sort of value that their website would have you believe but they are still significantly cheaper than big brand versions. You are not saving 60%, but 30-40%? Certainly.
I guess the way you have to look at things is how much the relationships with the LBS matters to you, how loyal you are to a given brand and if you have a reasonable level of bike mechanic skills or not. I know when I started to get into non-wally world type bikes, it was reassuring to have the LBS there to help with any problems I might have. However, now that I have experience working with bikes, no brand loyalty and no history with a LBS near me the extra money for the LBS doesn't make sense for me.

Bikes: I have five of brikes
thread back from the dead!
i'm still madly in love with my BD.com Motobecane Ti road bike that i bought over 4 years ago. she's still riding strong and she's still my go to fair-weather bike to commute with. my favorite bike in my small stable, by far.

now that my commute is radically shorter, i'm thinking of ditching the backpack and getting a dedicated commuter biker with a rack and full fenders that i can ride every single day, rain or shine. BD.com has some sweet prices on some sweet disc brake CX bikes that would probably fit the bill very well. now all i have to do is talk my wife into letting me buy another bike; that's the tricky part.
