Custom U-lock carrier

I too have been frustrated by the poor quality of the U-lock holders that come with Kryptonite, Planet Bike, all other locks for that matter. So I decided to make my own. The pictures are pretty self-explanatory. The basic design is based on 1"x1" aluminum angle stock, which Home Depot carries. This stuff can be cut with a carbide miter saw, or by hand. The clips that attach the Aluminum angle to the pannier rack are electrical cable clamps dipped in "liquid electrical tape" a couple times. The 5/8 holes were made on a drill press. A velcro tie and rubber bumpers are used to prevent clanging. The rack is a standard Bontrager.

Just one piece of velcro strap to hold it. Even that is optional as the lock is heavy and it seats deeply into the rack.

I saw this recently:https://www.etsy.com/listing/55505446...r-rack-mounted Made me think of this thread. I don't know if it would fit that huge lock though. He says he can do custom holsters too. It looks like it would go good with a brooks saddle.

I do this, but use a rubber band (cut from an inner tube) instead of the velcro. just weave it through the lock to hold it tight to the rack.

however, i'd much rather if i could move the weight to the middle of the bike somewhere...

The best way is using this: https://www.etsy.com/listing/62245537...ck?ref=pr_shop

I'm a fred, we don't do "best", so the way I do it is to jam the lock down the top of my grocery pannier when it's folded up.

No argument... that leather holster (https://www.etsy.com/listing/62245537...ck?ref=pr_shop) is pretty slick. I like my uber-cool Abus set up, but if I ever build a 3-speed, Brooks-saddled, coffee-shop bike then one of those holsters will be carrying my u-lock.
