My recreational riding and my commuting are pretty exclusive from one another. However, in a situation such as yesterday where I altered my route home in order to run an errand (and subsequently rode 2 miles further than normal), I counted the extra two miles as commuting miles.

Yep, any mileage between my house and work, or between work and my house, I count as a commute.

Yesterday I went from work to Starbucks (to kill 30 minutes), to my dental appointment, to the grocery store and then home and counted all that as miles. What alternative is there?

This morning, it was so nice I rode 38.77 miles from my house to work instead of taking my "normal" 10. That's 38.77 miles commuting as far as I am concerned.

I don't see how else to do it.

I'm in agreement with all the guys above. If I take my bike into work, that means anything I do on it between the time I leave my home and the time I arrive back at home is all valid. Otherwise, I'd just be using my car to accomplish the same thing. Why wouldn't I include them?

Either way, I enjoy keeping track of my mileage here --- not because I'm anal about it or competing against others -- but because it inspires me to continue riding and gives me a feel about how I'm doing relative to a very small sample of riders who also happen to enjoy posting their efforts on this one particular web site. Hopefully my miles are helping inspire others on this site to ride more too.
