Nice ride in, upper 30's, damp but clean streets, almost no headwind. A breeze compared to yesterday. I even shed my ski jacket, just went with the REI windbreaker.

Had to deal with a garbage truck up ahead of me on East Captitol street that couldn't quite decide: right trun? left turn? right turn it is...I just hung way back.

Mid 30's, clear, and no wind to speak of.

I left a little late-ish, and was going to take slightly shorter on-street route instead of the Trinity Trail. However my headlight -which is my backup because my usual light is out for repair - died too. I decided to take the Trail after all, to give the sun time to come up a bit before I had to take to the streets in town. Since I was taking the longer route, I had to push it pretty hard, but I made my train with a little time to spare.

Going home, I'll use the 3rd backup Petzl headlamp as a be-seen light. Crazy-cool yellow moonset this morning about 7am. I shoulda taken a photo, but as I said, I was rushing.

I got up, looked outside - 33 degrees F and gloppy, snow/rain pouring down. I felt chilled, and reluctantly made the decision to crawl back into my warm bed and get another 45 minutes of sleep and drive.
Now that I'm at work, I kinda wish I'd ridden. I'm not a morning person at all, so it is really hard for me to get motivated on mornings like this.
Oh, well. There's always tomorrow! Supposed to be clear and cold.

Chilly ride in this morning at 0C/32F. Passed another cyclist going up Burnaby Mountain with no taillight at 6am in the dark. At least he had a headlight and reflective clothing. Halfway up the hill I saw a Coyote trotting down the sidewalk. Haven't seen one of them in a while.

31F clear. Not sure about this ACS freewheel. Definite lag in there.

First bike commute of this week, also first after yesterday's snow storm that piled another few inches on last week's blizzard. Roads are plowed but slushy, narrowed by tall snowbanks, and full of puddles. Temp about 35F, a heatwave, enough to soften the ice pack for traction. Roads were wet with blocked drains, mostly pedaling through water while the sidewalk was plowed down to about 1-2" slush and packed ice/snow mix.

I saw another cyclist today going the same way! He surprised me when I checked for traffic behind me and saw him right there before I darted left to jump a curb onto a plowed sidewalk. I was late so I didn't think to stop and chat. Then he blew by me going down the road in the right lane watery mess while I slogged through the mush and chunks.

Weather was OK this morning relatively clear about -9 degrees celsius. The bad thing was that it rained a bit yesterday and it flashfroze overnight. As a result there was a nice layer of black ice on the roads. Leaving my street I have to take a short but steep hill that sweeps to the right into a roundabout. Trying to keep the speed down I feathered the brakes till felt the front wheel start to slip. Easing up on the front brake I gave it a little more rear brake till I reached the speed where I could enter the roundabout at a reasonable speed. - The first time the studded tires saved my butt -

I had to take the road on the way to catch my commuting MUP since the roadside trail has been ignored by the city after the first snowfall. I've been after my councillor about that. This section of road was just wet and it was fine till some silly person in a Honda Civic tried to squeeze me out. I finally got to my MUP and it was covered in crusty ice that the Mongoose had little difficulty cutting through. I rode for several km and for a time was followed by one of those sidewalk clearing dealies. After leaving the MUP I went to re-enter the roadway (till I caught it again later on) and the rear wheel slipped on black ice just as I was stuffing my right foot into the strapless toe-clip. Managed to stay upright fairly easily. -The second time the studded tires saved me from crashing -

Then I went back onto the MUP and some turkey on a bike was trying to pass a pedestrian by coming at me head on at full speed on a snow covered trail. He passed the ped within 6 inches at full speed giving no warning at all. This seriously irritated me. Finally made it into work in the usual time and had to face the usual lecture about cycling in the winter. That was fun.

Nice ride home this evening, had to be mid 40s. Great to shed the balaclava and goggles I wear (I tear up easily in cold wind) so I could actually hear my tires on the pavement. I cut out right at 5pm too so I caught a bit of light for most of the ride home.

Mid 40's on the way in and mid 60's on the way home... No flats for me today - which was a relief...!

Day of extremes for me.

On the way into work, it was beautiful and calm. Made very good time averaging 17 mph. Way home from work I struggled a bit, as the wind was in my face. Overall though, I averaged 16.5 mph, which is above average for my round trip to work.

Then, on the way to my volunteering, things turned. Way in was slow, but not horrible. Slight headwind, and seemed to be sluggish. Weather wasn't horrible by any means. Then, when I leave, everything is covered in about an inch of snow, and the wind is whipping a lot harder than it was on my way in, and in the complete opposite direction I'm going in. Probably a good 20 degrees colder with the wind chill. And I wasn't prepared at all for it. Needless to say, it was a very cold and slow ride home. Averaged 15.5 on the way in, and 13.5 overall.

10F, light snow. Strange riding the MUP at 7:30 pm instead of 5:30 pm (late lecture this semester), totally different crowd; exercisers instead of commuters. Pretty happy that it warmed up though. Went backpacking over the long weekend at -25F, so 10F feels nice and warm. Crappy weather today, but here's a pic from Tuesday's ride (us students get looong weekends ).



Working tomorrow (well, today technically), so let it snow! Since I've only got 2 miles to go, anyway.

Clear and cold at 28 F ( -2 C). We had that break of balmy weather yesterday, but that is over at least into the weekend. It is supposed to snow tonight, but we will see. The weekend will be just plain cold for errands and the library.

Uneventful, pleasant ride in. Bit of a headwind but no complaints here.

I had to drive today because of needs at work but had a great ride yesterday. It was 1F with a light dusting of snow so I enjoyed the sparkle. It warmed up to 13F but by the time I rode home it was back down to 3F. I'm finding that I have daylight most of the way home now and that is encouraging.

Today was a challenge, 41*F raining with a 20 mph wind blowing directly from the north. I ride directly north. There were defenitly times that, had I not been pedaling, I would have started going backwards. Definitely challenging, but that's what made it worth it! Great ride today!

I ride straight north, too, but was on the road early enough (I leave at 4:45 am) that I got halfway to work before hitting that north wind. It was 50 degrees with drizzle for my ride. It's already down to 32 degrees (9:30 am), but that 30+ mph north wind will be a nice tailwind for my ride home this afternoon.

14F and clear, with patchy ice on the streets from yesterday's precipitation. Nice ride in. I'm really liking the beam pattern that my E3 is putting out. Alot.
It will get nice and warm this afternoon - 36-39F and sun in the forecast. That's damn near tee shirt weather!

First commute since last week. Had Monday off for the holiday and then was dealing with a nasty chest and head cold. Finally felt well enough to come to work today. It was nice to be back on the bike, although general residual achiness, raw lungs (from all the coughing), and just feeling kinda drained of energy from the illness made this morning's ride in a little tougher than it usually seems. The 15 mph headwind, while not extreme, didn't help matters either.

At least my cold had good timing. I know that the last couple of days would have likely been non-bike days anyway compliments of the ice/freezing rain that fell on Monday night.

32F and dry

I've been trying something different this week -- riding to work in the morning before I eat breakfast. Supposedly exercising on an empty stomach will help you lose weight. We'll see about that. However, it's not as bad as I expected and I've had plenty of energy to ride 10 miles on an empty stomach. I miss my bowl of cereal and milk in the mornings, however, as I'm having to get by on instant oatmeal at the office for breakfast.

I can't wait for the ride hoome! Got to leave early for the 2011 Dallas Bike Plan meeting at City Hall tonight.
