It was a nice crisp 60 degrees with a few hot air balloons in the sky. They were like the cherry on top of a beautiful morning sundae.

I'm glad I wore my long sleeve shirt today. After cutting across some grass in the park my tire slipped against some low lying wet wood edging that borders the asphalt and down I went. My forearm took the worse of sliding across the path, so the shirt saved me from some nasty road rash. Though I did get a scraping just below my right knee. All in all, nothing that will slow me down or make me miss any days of riding this weekend.

The bike had surprisingly little damage as well. The STI shifters were rotated in a bit, but not even scratched. The rear derailleur pivot is scratched a bit, but no problems shifting. I stopped off at the LBS on the way home to get the shifters straightened and derailleurs adjusted. I had planned on going there anyway as the shifter cables had stretched out quite a bit during the first 900km I put on the bike, and I had the barrel adjuster screwed out pretty far as a result.

Interesting commute today. Can concur with the other DC posters on the wet conditions in the area for the past several days. Should be clearing out this weekend. Conditions were wet this morning, but not flood-like as it was yesterday on the commute home. Here is a video from the W&OD trail here in VA from yesterday afternoon. Parts of the trail were impassable.

Cool morning (55F) so the ride was just right... ride home will be a tad warmer and we are expected to break some temperature records this week.

My co-worker, who also rode in, looks out the window and says, "it looks like a firey smoke filled hell hole out there, and hey look, you have a head wind." It looks as though I am about to endure 10 miles of smoked filled goodness.

I had to do some transporting today so I took my 3 year old Mazda 3. It has 40,000 miles on it. The A/C went out. Made me wonder why I even have it. If it weren't for the fact that it will have less than 45,000 on it when it's paid for it would be gone already. I have a motorcycle with hard case panniers and a fairing and a trunk that serves nicely as my bicycles second car. It doesn't even rain here. Would I be thinking like this if the A/C worked? LOL.

I was off Monday for the holiday, but rode to work the next 4 days. The last two afternoon rides home, it has been 87 degrees, and after all the 100+ degree temperatures this year, that doesn't feel hot at all. As this article points out, this year, Texas had the hottest summer ever endured anywhere in the United States, at least since they've been recording such things.

In spite of the record heat and the fact that I'm a 60 year old lung cancer survivor, I rode 827 miles in June, 840 miles in July, and 790 miles in August, so I think I did well this summer.

My commute today was interesting to say the least.

Nice clear dry weather and lots of bikes on the road. As I rode in a young woman passed me on the right just as I was starting off from a dead stop at a red light that had just changed to green. She gave me a nice smile as she kind of cut me off but it was easy to forgive.

I then realized though I'd have to pass her as I got up to speed and went around her, gave a little smile nod and rode on. As I stopped at the next red light and I'm waiting she buzzes by me on the right again and shoots through the red light just as the light changed for the traffic crossing the intersection. Well, there was this truck blocking the view of a car and this girl came so close to getting flattened I thought my heart would stop. She careened just out of reach of the front bumper and rode on.

With this on my mind I get to the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Brighton Ave and a cyclist has gone down hard on the trolley tracks moments before I get there. He's hit his head (for those who are interested he was not wearing a helmet). He's in a state of semi-consciousness and the BU police are there in a second. I left the scene as the ambulance arrived.

Then as I'm cutting cross town outside of Copley Square. A woman in her late 40's, early 50's on a nice commuting bike runs the red light I am stopped at and flies into an intersection with traffic coming at her from 4 different directions at once. Yikes! It was really close as one car jammed right up behind her and blew their horn (totally unnecessary but you could argue that "she deserved it")

Tonight was Boston Courtesy Mass Ride. I was sorry to have missed it. I was in the area at the time. Just plumb forgot.

Dang dude. Looks pretty nasty!

As we say in my business: "That's job security!" (I'm an operating room nurse!) Amazingly stupid, and totally preventable crap that makes cyclists, in general, look like irresponsible hacks. No wonder some motorists hate us.

Awesome commute tonight.
Temp about 70, full moon, dead calm, Penn Cove was like a sheet of glass which is a rare sight.
Found myself loafing in lower gears and just rubber necking which added 10 min to my usual time but it was worth it.
Got home and had macho nachos for a late dinner with salsa made from tomatoes, bell peppers and onions fresh out of the garden.
Just a great ending to the day!

I left my light on when I went into the corner store. When I came out and looked towards my bike, I nearly got blinded by my rear blinkie. I was about 50 ft away from the bike and I dunno if it was because I was at just the right angle or what but it made me go damn that's bright. Oh, and this was about 3:30 in the afternoon and weather was overcast.

The last two afternoon rides have been just on the warm side of comfortable.

On the last two morning rides, it's been just on the cool side of comfortable to start out but by the time I was half way home, it was quite nice, indeed.

A cool ride in at 61f (16c) and the new tire is holding, or more like the patched up tube is holding. It took me a bit on Saturday to locate the hole in the tire from the blowout last week. It was on the side and just below the rim.

Frustrating. That describes this morning's commute. No particular thing, just an accumulation of little things. Like, I couldn't find my damn glasses and had to leave without them, got half way to work and realized I forgot to reset my odometer, got a little bit farther and realized I forgot my water, hit every red light, had to wait on traffic at every crossing, and finally when I got to work construction workers had the entrance I use tore up and I had to walk around the building to a different entrance!

Oh well, it's Monday morning. It was a beautiful morning for a commute actually. 60F/16C, clear skies, no wind. So really, I guess it was a pretty good start for the day.

I had a backwind / tailwind (whatever it's called) this morning so i shaved off another 2 minutes of the commute. 26km/u average speed, not bad i think

Pleasant. Temps in the low 60sF/~16C with a light headwind. Started smelling perfume on the MUP. Then I came up behind a girl on a bike looking like she was commuting to school. Hard to guess her age. Early teens I guess. Waaaay too much perfume. I said hi as I passed.

Edit: I also had a guy in a car ask me for directions. He was from Florida (license plates) and had a FEMA shirt on. We were on Lake Street but he wanted Lakeside Avenue. I directed him accordingly. You'd think FEMA would give their people GPS units.

Not the best commute this morning. My legs were tired from riding a fast metric century on Sunday. That was bearable by riding slower. What made the ride difficult was my rear brake shrieking like a banshee every time I had to slow down. Ironically I had cleaned and lubed the rear wheel over the weekend. When I got to work I examined the wheels, and the rim and spokes were splattered with black grease. Apparently the new lube I am trying out is very messy. Not good. On the plus side, the weather was great this morning.

Didn't ride last week due to the rain (I know - I'm not a real commuter [see Raleigh's video]). Half way in, I'm thinking that most of the runners I've passed are wearing black or dark clothes, and did I miss a memo? Fortunately, most runners later had light colored clothes. Made me think I have to be more alert.

Watched a beautiful moonset on the way in.

Today is my 50th commute of the season, and there is still a first time for everything. I am celebrating it commando.

Classes started last week, but didn't get to start the cycle commuting till Friday. I was sick at the beginning of the week and there were lightening storms Thursday.

This morning I had a great commute in at 61F and dawn/sunny with winds from the S @ 3mph. This semester I trying out a new route. It's nice because there's a lot less traffic, but there's more hills and it's farther. I'll definitely have to start leaving earlier if I want to continue going this way.

Cool with a nice strong tail wind, which will fortunately die down by the afternoon. According to the forecast, it looks like Wednesday might be my first sub-freezing commute in a while. Today I hit 5000km of riding for the year and should be able to do a couple thousand more before the year is over.

When I was at the campus last week I saw a scooter style e-bike parked at a bike rack. The owner had no allusions about it being a bicycle as the crank arms had been removed.
