Check out the video of Lake Michigan and these determined bikedrivers! 9/30/2011

Okay so who brings a snorkel along on the daily commute? :innocent:

that was an amazing video, that one dude almost lost his bike to the lake.

thankfully it looked like no one was seriously hurt/drowned.

it was crazy when i rode the path early this morning, but not THAT crazy.

Didn't quite get the clothing right this morning. +5C with a 30km/h headwind, I arrived at school with a very chilly stomach. I left extra early so I could do some studying. My first commute with a Stella 200 I got back in the summer. I plugged it in to charge last night but it obviously didn't as the low power light started flashing about 15 minutes into the ride.

My total riding for September was 1300km. I've been pretty worn out the past few days, so I should take a few days off riding, or at least stop pushing so hard. I have rides planned for this weekend, so maybe next weekend I'll stay off the bike.

Maybe next week I'll ride the touring bike instead of the road bike. I enjoy the road bike, but the tourers 11-32 cassette is nicer from a dead stop the the road bikes 12-27.

Bud Bent 09-30-11 06:37 PM

I rode to work all five days again this week. In fact, I rode to work every single work day in September. I only did two non-commuting rides all month, but with all the rides to work, I still ended up with 713 miles for the month.

It was 100 degrees yesterday afternoon as I rode home. That was our 71st 100+ degree day of the year here. But a front came in last night, and this morning I was riding against a strong north wind on my way to work. It was a nice tailwind this afternoon for the ride home. The temperature isn’t supposed to get above the 80′s for the next few days.

The only pedaling I’ll be doing this weekend will be tomorrow in my kayak, so the 122.5 work commute miles will be my total for the week.

2011 days ridden to work: 167
2011 commuting mileage: 4080.3

Great commutes today.

This morning it was 55F and dawn/sunny with light winds from the S @ 3mph. Had a pickup truck put my life, another vehicle's life, and a bus full of kids' lives at risk about 4 miles in. A bus was approaching me from behind and was slowing so it could stop to pick up kids. I was riding in the wide shoulder at this part: http://g.co/maps/wv53j. Next thing I heard was a bunch of horns and this stupid driver in a pickup passed the bus crossing the double yellow line and going into oncoming traffic. The vehicle going the other way had to take the shoulder to avoid getting hit head on while beeping the horn. It didn't have a direct effect on me, but had there been a collision, it might have been a different story. That was definitely the closest to a head on collision I've ever seen. I wish I had my video camera in case something did happen. Was he really that late and in such a rush that it cost putting all those lives in jeopardy?

75F and mostly cloudy this afternoon with winds from the S @ 10-18mph gusting to 23mph. For the commute home, I met up with a friend at his house and we rode together for most of the commute till he had to turn around and head back home. I would say it was the best Friday commute home this semester. Stopped at the hardward store after we parted ways to pick up some stuff, then finished the rest of the ride.

jsdavis 09-30-11 08:43 PM

Watched a gal on a SS or fixed blow past me at a red. I think she tried to speed up and beat the pedestrians across the street and got a face full of hot tea. Looked like really bad 2nd or possibly 3rd degree burn across forehead, face, and neck.

dygituljunky 10-01-11 06:49 AM

Not a bad ride. I took a slightly different route which amounted to almost no difference in distance.

Drivers were unbelievable pushy this Saturday morning with almost nobody on the road.

Oh, well.

I had that going too, but we all overslept Friday and I had to drive the kid into school then straight to work. It's surprising how lousy it feels when you miss your ride.

Oh, well.

I was tired and pushed it (had to get home on a deadline); I did 47 minutes each way. Then walked to and from the bus stop with the family; about 1.5 miles. Long day.

ParkingTheBus 10-01-11 08:12 PM

Very deadly for me. 45km/h headwinds with 60km/h gusts.

Easy Peasy 10-01-11 08:45 PM

Missed a day, only my second missed day since starting in June, due to an emergency at work. But when I got home I took off on my bike for a trip to Lowe's.

fletchh 10-03-11 04:53 AM

First day since early may for long sleeves and heavier gloves, but the ride in was good at 45 F (7 C). First time in over a week, where I could see the morning dark sky, and even some stars. I check the weather out before I go to bed and it appears to be a nice day coming, but you wake up and check the weather and it will be a rainy day. I hate that.

vtjim 10-03-11 06:00 AM

Okay, mental note: Still have to keep my trouser leg tied to my calf, even with a chain/belt guard. Hooked my right leg on a part of the guard. Bent it up so it prevented pedaling. Pulled over, wrestled it more or less back into position but it needs to be removed completely and straightened properly. Been riding for 3 weeks like this and never had an issue. Only takes once!

Temp around 50F/10C, no wind, and damp. I put new front pads on yesterday, so the bike is nice and quiet again. Also my friend in Wales sent me 3 more packs of spoke reflectors so now both my wheels are completely spoke-reflected. :D I don't know what it looks like at night but I'm dying to find out.

Wife wants me to put the rest of them on her bike.

tarwheel 10-03-11 06:02 AM

Coolest weather here since last spring with morning temps in the 40s. It felt nice arriving at work dry (not sweaty) for a change. I've ridden 9 days in a row, altho not all commuting, and my legs are feeling tired. The forecast calls for great weather here all week, so I'm gonna try to bike commute every day. My legs will be fried by the weekend.

making 10-03-11 06:14 AM

Probably the coldest morning I have ever commuted, 42 degrees. I was a temperature whimp. It was a great ride in, actually it might be more pleasant than 60 degrees. Only problem is with my ears covered I cant hear as well, the cars sound farther off then they are. looking forward to 32degrees. I dont know about riding on ice.

Malachi292 10-03-11 06:19 AM

42F/6C, partly cloudy, no wind.

Pleasant ride in this morning.

wphamilton 10-03-11 06:58 AM

We finally have some of that cooler weather here in the Atlanta area, 40F this morning! Nice ride, no sweat!

Surrealdeal 10-03-11 07:29 AM

Beautiful brisk fall morning. With the shortening days almost my entire morning ride is in the dark now. I am still getting home at or slightly before sunset.

Chalupa102 10-03-11 07:29 AM

Excellent ride this morning at 53F and dawn/overcast with no wind. Had one of the fastest commutes in this semester and was feeling great overall. May have rain on the ride home, so I brought the rain gear.

idc 10-03-11 09:49 AM

~50 F this morning so a good first test of some of my fall/winter cycling gear. Need some better gloves, and I probably should dig out my hat but otherwise the technical layer under
fleece under wind shell worked great up top, and gym shorts on top of leg warmers on top of bike shorts worked fine too. looking forward to many more commuting days this year!

gecho 10-03-11 10:06 AM

10c with a light headwind, still it was warm enough for shorts. I moved my rack back to the touring bike this week since I have a fit scheduled Wednesday morning. After being on the road bike for a few months it was immediately obvious that the person who did the fit for my touring bike had no idea what they were doing. The bars are somewhat lower than the saddle, and my normal sight line when in a comfortable riding position is looking at the ground about 12 feet in front of the bike.

dcb23 10-03-11 10:59 AM

Chilly commute on my brand new Bianchi Iseo....wow. I'll post a pic to the bike pics thread and on my one year thread. What a difference, simply amazing.

Gloves were on as well as the long sleeve.

My commute is half of yours and I get tired after just a few days in a row. You have the honor of being one of the people on this forum who make me feel like a wimp when I drive. Thanks!

EKW in DC 10-03-11 01:27 PM

Blissfully cool, almost cold at first. Upper 40s to around 50 F. Did 15-16 mph into a headwind and didn't even break a sweat. I love this time of year. October and November are the best riding months of the year!
