Great commute this morning at 48-50F and dawn/overcast with light rain towards the end of the ride and mostly tailwinds from the NE @ 4-6mph. Made great time and had a fast average speed as well.

For this afternoon, it was a good but very slow commute home. 55F with rain (heavy at times) and mostly headwinds from the NE @ 13-18mph. I believe this was the slowest ride home so far this semester thanks to all the winds and street flooding.

BridgeNotTunnel 10-19-11 04:42 PM

Rain, and a cool 60 degrees for the ride home.

In Manhattan, little to no wind to speak of.

The moment I turned on to the 59th street bridge, wind tunnel.

I would guess a steady 15-20mph, with gusts in excess of 30mph, mostly headwind.

Traffic was especially crappy. As soon as I set out I had resigned myself to a very slow, and careful ride home.

At one point I squeezed my back brake and it did absolutely nothing. Thankfully I had room to maneuver, and kept pumping my brakes until they started to grab.

Coming up the shared lane on 1st Ave towards the bridge and a van driver actually pulled in his mirror to give me more room. So I thanked him as cheerily as possible.

My favorite thing about riding in these conditions is the lack of other cyclists.

I probably saw less than 15 other bikes on my way home, which is highly unusual.

A nice taste of things to come when the dropping temps weed out the non-hackers.

A torrential down pour in the early dark, mid 50s. Have the right gear, and it was so much fun!

I put a commute video together. I shot the footage with my cheap cell phone, held in my hand. I filled up the memory on a trip last month, then filmed the rest of it yesterday. What a difference... cloudy, but very dry (everything is brown in the first half), then sunny, cooler, and green with the recent rains.

That was fun. Loved the jams.

Back to living and commuting in NYC for a while. It means some changes. First off, I'm riding my folder- and must admit I'm loving it. The last few days have been great weather and a wonderful commute along the Hudson on the West Side bike path. But today was rain, rain, rain and started with a flat front tire. Fixed that in fairly short order and then off I went into the wild, wet, yonder. I love being in this city. It has it's challenges but it's really fun on a bike.

Ice on all bridges this morning, plus some on the C street underpass. Puddles iced over (but not frozen to the ground), and a layer atop the smaller part of Westchester Lagoon. My summer tires are too big to fit under my fall fenders, but it looks like that won't be a problem for very long.

High today was 35º F. Hellooooo winter.

A blustery morning at 59 F (15C). This time of year is not only looking out for cars, but falling trees and deer. I have seen trees go down in my life and it is frightening at how fast they come down. I do love the wind, but not when riding against it. Too much rain compounds everything.

Strange weather pattern in NC this morning. We had a cold front come through overnight and it was much colder and windier today after several days of warm humid weather. The weird thing is that the wind was blowing hard out of the SW this morning, even though it was cold. Usually we get strong winds out of the N or NW when cold fronts come through, and I get a nice tailwind riding to work. I wasn't so fortunate today and had a stiff headwind all the way to work. On Monday, it was blowing just as hard out of the SW but it was a warm wind and the temperatures were 20 degrees higher.

Nice this morning. Supposed to be raining, but it wasn't. 55F/13C with a light tailwind. Now the sun is out. I brought rain gear just in case it goes to rain for the ride home. It's really warm here in northern VT for this time of year. Not just lately, but all month, and last month too.

Edit: My wife just sent me this article on winter commuting from our local "alternative newspaper." I know one of the interviewees. :)

Woo Hoo Set a new record for slowness....1 hour 29 minutes on the ride in. Holy Headwind Batman....42 degrees and dry. Another great day for a bike commute! :-)

dcb23 10-20-11 06:39 AM

Heck of a strong headwind coming in but a warm one.

Got dumped on coming home last night, but again it was warm.

Chalupa102 10-20-11 07:39 AM

Great commute this morning at 55F and dawn to overcast with winds from the ENE to variable @ 5-8mph. Wore the rain pants because the roads were still wet from rain earlier this morning. Had major issues with my right clipless pedal, so I had to stop to fix it in a parking lot. My shoe kept slipping out of it because a screw can loose. I had the same thing happen to the other side a few months ago. While I was working in the parking lot, a cop pulled in and asked if I needed any tools or anything. He said that he sees me going through the intersection every morning. After I got it fixed and back on the road, I booked it to school to try to make up lost time but was still a little late to class.

Wet and windy (strong headwind) this morning. As the showers at work are being beautified, they cannot be used. So I didn't want to put true rain gear on, because I'd sweat like crazy...with no chance of showering afterwards = not good. As the temp was 10 degrees C, I decided that getting soaked wasn't that bad. It was interesting that by the time I got outside of my place the rain has stopped...only to come down in buckets after 5 km of riding. After another 5 km or so the rain relented. So I arrived at work wet, but not dripping wet (and still happy to ride).

wphamilton 10-20-11 08:32 AM

It's finally cool enough here to skip the shower at work. Low 40's, for the first time this year. The trails are pretty empty now, just a few recreational riders and one or two commuters. I am pleased with my latest model upright fairing, having just about the right balance of protection vs ventilation, and quite comfortable in the rain a couple of days ago.

gecho 10-20-11 10:46 AM

+4C with a moderate headwind, and the wind is supposed to swing so I get a headwind on the way home too. I think I'm just about over my cold, cycling is an excellent decongestant. First day with my new thermal tights. My legs were a little sweaty when I got to school so they are quite warm.

reducedfatoreo 10-20-11 12:39 PM

Headwinds all around? Had a 15-30mph headwind coming down the Hudson River. Practically no cover for the entire time. Great temperature and sunny skies after a rainy night, though.

There was one interesting moment when the wind shifted rather suddenly from SW to SE and I went quickly from one side of the tires to the other!

GriddleCakes 10-20-11 01:18 PM

30º F and dark at 8 am. Nearly empty MUP had me racing tumbleweeds all the way in.

Chalupa102 10-20-11 02:25 PM

Excellent commute home this afternoon at 64-67F and partly cloudy with mostly crosswinds from the S @ 21-24mph gusting 29-33mph. Surprisingly made fairly decent time given the heavy winds.

gecho 10-20-11 06:44 PM

16C with a headwind comparable to this morning, but it was a much much faster ride. I was able to wear shorts and I think that had a lot to do with it. Sadly that will probably be the last time I can wear shorts this year. Next weeks daily highs are forecast to be in the single digits.

A year ago next Wednesday was the first ride I did in the snow, luckily there is still none of that in the forecast. Last year it was November 10th when the snow arrived and stayed.

A few weeks ago I noticed a problem with my tail light. The batteries seemed to die much faster than the previous set did. So I made a note of the date I swapped the batteries and sure enough, they were noticeably dim when I arrived home today. That means they lasted just 7.5 round trips for a totally running time of no more than 9 hours, when the light is rated for 50 and I suspect I previously got well beyond that. The problems started about the same time I switched to a new package of alkaline batteries, but also when it started getting cold out. So I'll have to do some testing to see if it is the light or the batteries.

Beautiful blue skys with cool temps as I left my house. 1 mile later, dense fog. The fog breaks at the top of my commute climb 10 miles later, blue skys again.

buzzman 10-20-11 09:33 PM

Nice ride uptown along the Hudson this morning with a stiff breeze at my back. But the ride downtown from there was slow. Getting accustomed to the New York City riding. Certain streets just plain suck for getting crosstown. I've got to get back into the rhythm and find my preferred cross town routes again. It's the mid-town cross streets that are a PIA. Some aren't too bad but some have construction, are lined with trucks or jammed with traffic or all 3. Other than that having some nice rides every day.

Took the bus down south today and always hate that as it bangs me around too much and rode home on a 1950 Raleigh Sports I picked up... the bike was purchased in this neighbourhood 61 years ago from a long closed shop so it was kind of interesting to be bringing the bike back home.

Around 40F/4.5C this morning when I woke up. My Kryptonite Fargetaboutit lock showed up last night and let me just say - that lock is heavy. Haha. I was going to ride the fixie in, but when I walked outside the wind was blowing all around and figured it would be a good day to give the MTB a test trial. The bike needs a few adjustments, but will end up being my winter commuter this year.

Overall, a great ride in. Nice breeze coming off the East River and grabbed a few great pictures of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Pictures please. Didn't happen without the pictures ya know.

Yesterday I didn't ride in due to the fact that I never properly plugged in my phone wednesday and left the wifi on, so the battery died in the night. When I woke up I realized it was light out and I had over slept. I ended up taking a cab that hit a lot of traffic and cost me far too much money....

Today, mid fifties, WINDY.

A little slow going, got caught at the bridge, even though I left as late as possible.

The difference fifteen to thirty minutes makes in manhattan traffic is undeniable.

Between 6:30 and 7, the traffic builds like a rushing rising river of steel.
