43F/6C and sunny, with a light tailwind. Another glorious rat bike commute. :P I've noticed more "serious-looking" runners lately. Must be training for the marathon that takes place here on Memorial Day weekend.
|
Summer heat and humidity today. 26 this morning, 33 at lunch (thank goodness I wasn't riding then) and 30 this evening on the way home. Sweating buckets all the way, but still had a great time. :)
|
47f Nice morning had a mixture of cross/head wind though, was windy as hell yesterday hopefully this wind quits it.

Total airhead morning for me. My commute has two parts: 1) I push the bike and my 3 month old's stroller half mile to the day care and then ride the 5-6 miles in to work. Had the stroller all loaded up and got down to my apartment complex's underground garage to get my bike only to realize that the slip on shoes I wear at work and for the walk to the sitter's were in the bottom of my bag and I was wearing my cleats. Oh well, it's only half a mile. I drop my daughter sitter's and realize I forgot my seatbag with all my tools. Hoping I don't have any mechanical problems for flats. Get to work and go to the bathroom to change, get undressed and realize I forgot my bag of cleanup stuff (baby wipes, deodorant, baby powder) in my desk. I don't know where my head's at, but it doesn't look good for my productivity.
My daughter didn't go back to sleep after my wife fed her and left at quarter to 6 this morning, so I had some extra time with her that I usually miss because she sleeps until we get to day care. The daddy daughter time was great, but made it difficult to get around as she didn't want to be set down. I think it was that, plus debating what to wear (and whether to take public transit instead of riding after stopping at day care) because a front's coming in this afternoon and it's probably going to be a rainy commute home, and then the headwind that made me ride several gears lower than normal, just flustered me and one thing fed on the next to get me all out of whack. Still that extra 2 hours with awake daughter was nice. |
around 50F, sunny. Little wind. All in all a pretty perfect day for riding -- and it showed; bikes everywhere!
Minor annoyances? Mower on the towpath -- fortunately, there was a place to go around him not too far after I came up behind him. Commuter bus stopping in the travel lane to discharge passengers into the bike lane. But you know what? I smiled through it all. Hakuna Matata. |
Back in the saddle today, first time since last Wednesday. Overall a great commute, I am beginning to get a bit more assertive on the road and beginning to see my fitness come back. This morning my commute in was less than 30 minutes, not bad for 5 miles with lights, etc. Weather was decent, low 70's but humid. Supposed to be around 90 this afternoon, so that should be fun. :-/ Only downside to my assertiveness, I got over to make a left hand turn a bit to early and had a car that rode my ass for about 1.5 blocks, oh well!
Quick relatively newbie question. Why are my front brakes squeaking and almost squealing, too tight? |
About 5C, sunny, breezy. Construction crews barricaded off a lane of road on my commute, about 1 km (~1/2 mile) long, leaving only one lane for travel. I really pushed to go as fast as I could, but once the road opened up again, I could tell that the 5 or 6 cars that had collected behind me were happy to get around me.

Probably not too tight. Maybe aligned incorrectly or not properly toed in. If you get a chance, take some pictures and start a new thread over in the mechanics forum. They're usually pretty good about that sort of stuff.

I ran headfirst into the back of a parked SUV a few blocks into my ride while looking at my derailleur trying to figure out what was wrong with the shifting. Called in sick and limped home. "I am an idiot, so I won't be coming in today." I thought I might have broken my neck or concussed myself, but I iced the neck and it's feeling a little better now. Very sore and stiff. Bloodied elbow and knee and a place on my thigh less than an inch from my left testicle. I guess it could have been worst.
Condolences to friends and family of Wouter Weylandt who died yesterday from injuries sustained in a crash in the Giro after he clipped a wall while glancing backwards. |

Condolences to friends and family of Wouter Weylandt who died yesterday from injuries sustained in a crash in the Giro after he clipped a wall while glancing backwards. My ride today was just about perfect. Got out early and took the 20 mile detour to work. Light traffic, light wind, blue skies. I love May in NorCal. |
Thankfully my bike shows no sign of damage. :)
Fortunately I took the brunt of the impact with my head. Unfortunately my head wasn't quite "head on" and my neck got wrenched. I think if I had head butted that truck a little more straight I wouldn't be hurting so much now. Kinda like how a bike wheel stays true when crashed head on but folds up like a cheap suitcase when hit at an angle. I'm not certainI haven't cracked a vertebrae but I'm afraid my insurance will get cancelled if I go to an ER today. Late payment is grounds for dismissal and I didn't pay this month's premium (due on the first) until I got home today from my wreck. :( I probably should replace my very new helmet. It's not cracked but has a dent in it. |
numbness or tingling?
|
I had a hot but otherwise pleasant ride home. Getting ready to pop a beer. It is good being me.
|
NO! Thanks for asking.
|
Good. If you have other problems go to ER anyway. I aint gonna tell you what. but if in doubt.......
|
You're right. Thanks again. I'm hurting but I think a fracture would hurt worse.

Great commutes today. 52F and sunny with winds from the NNE @ 14mph gusting to 22mph. 68F and mostly cloudy with winds from the ENE @ 16mph this afternoon. It was one of the slowest commutes I've had coming home in a while. I had headwinds for the majority of it, so I just geared down and took my time.

First very hot commute home today. It was also the first 90 degree day, with a heat index of 95. Thankfully there was a breeze. Even with the heat it was a nice ride. I conquered half of my nemesis hill today, which is an improvement. This is a very terrible hill, because someone thought it was a good idea to stick a 4-way stop halfway up this hill. It is a pretty busy intersection, next to a regional hospital, so you can't just slow through the stop. :notamused:
At another intersection I was 2nd in a line of vehicles waiting for a green light. Right as the light changes I see and hear a fire engine coming as does the rest of the line behind me except for the lady right behind me. She is busy on the cell phone and tries to swing around me annoyed, I give her a look and at the same time she hears the fire truck and slams on the brakes. I swear, drivers and cell phones! :bang: |
started raining shortly before I left for home. In the 50's. Thought about just getting wet, but I have this new campmor rain cape I hadn't tried uet just sitting in my bag, so I pulled it out. With the hood up was way too hot and the cape was a bit to short of reach. got wet from sweat. should have just gone with my original idea of getting wet as the rain stopped a bit into my ride.

Had to do some errands this morning so I didn't ride in. On the way out of the office I'm thinking I'll do some park laps since I didn't ride and it was 70 degrees. By the time I got home the temp had dropped under 60, and the on-shore breeze kicked up. I had a glass (or two) of wine instead.
Tomorrow I'll ride in as my meeting in New Jersey was turned into a conference call that I can join remotely. Twice a week is my modest goal. I wouldn't enjoy it as much if I did it every day. |

For me, I drove my car today, and when I got home I found that the ignition lock on my car broke again... which means the key won't turn off, and I can't remove it either. I had to stall it and unhook the battery. It also means I can't use the car for any shopping trips till I get it fixed... and I just filled it up, too. 93 octane is $4.15 a gallon here, cost me $47!! Sheesh. That's what I get for owning a boosted sports car. I'll be riding the rest of the week. |
