25F, frosty (but not icy). Still, too.

dcb23 02-10-11 11:10 AM

Back in the saddle. Chilly, mid 20's-ish, headwind the whole way in. Tried a new pair of over-the-glasses ski goggles that I used yesterady on the slopes, no good. The old ones fit much better with my helmet.

The Mongoose was back in commission today but it was really cold with a nasty NW wind and nearly had to break out the balaclava. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I was so sluggish and realized when I got to the office that the seat was too low. When I took the bike in for service they raised the seat to clamp it to the workstand the mechanic didn't put it back at the right height and I didn't check. DUHHH.....

caloso 02-10-11 11:34 AM

Finally got my act together enough to do a decent hour of tempo before work. It was 35F when I left the house. I wore Roubaix-weight knickers on my bottom half: I was perfectly comfortable but noticed that my shins were bright red when I arrived at work. Probably need to wear full tights or at least long sox next time.

Raleigh GP 08 02-10-11 12:16 PM

Rode into work for the first time in a month. Temps in the mid 20's, a few small patches of ice on the W&OD coming in from the west (Ashburn). Dusting of snow was not an issue. Looking forward to slightly warmer temps on the way home, hopefully in the low 30's.

jdgesus 02-10-11 12:24 PM

lovely lovely ride today. sunny and crisp

sorry for all you stuck in the snow

AdamDZ 02-10-11 12:38 PM

After being teased wit a few sunny, warm days, I got mentally worn out when the temps dropped to lower 10s yesterday and I took the subway today. I noticed that my tolerance to cold weather drops with every Winter little by little. I bundled up, stuck earphones in, and survived the mass transit ride, wasn't all that bad. I will probably take the train tomorrow too. I'm sick and tired of this Winter. I'm not giving up, just taking a few days off.

scoatw 02-10-11 04:40 PM

I left the house today it was 8f. When I got to work 50 mins later it had dropped to 1f. The ride home this aftn it was a brisk 20f with lots of sunshine that you could hardly feel. It was still nice riding with the roads all cleared off, but what glare ice that was left on some of the side streets was a doozy to ride on. Slippery than heck.

bored117 02-10-11 09:06 PM

My leg is tired. Last few days, there was problems with Trains, and what seemed to be judacious amount of headwinds (avg 15-20mph...). Ended up riding more than usual and harder than usual. Hopefully no more of the headwind tomorrow. I was crawling at 11mph today with tired legs on section I usually go 16mph with some headwinds. Looking forward to weekend to rest up a little.

BigCircles 02-10-11 09:10 PM

Coldest commute for me yet. 19 on the way in - which felt like 10 - 15 with the northerly head wind. I put on an extra layer of wool and broke out the hand warmers. Surprisingly I was not that cold. Well, except for my face. (No balaclava...) My bottle actually froze up. First time for that. Weather is supposed to warm up this weekend.

Ipedaltahoe 02-10-11 09:11 PM

We had a few really warm days and now are back to freezing temps. A whopping 12 this morning, warmer on the way home and sunny. But, with wind still needed a jacket for the ride home. Got to remember no matter what jeans in freezing cold are just not good for warmth.

fletchh 02-11-11 06:26 AM

Just Cold at 14 F ( -10 C). Not much ice to deal with, but some of the snow at the corners is still potruding into the streets after 3 weeks. Today is my last day until the second week in March. Tomorrow, I am flying out to Barbados for 3 weeks of fun in the sun. I'll rent down there, and I had a thought of getting a foldie, but the airlines charge for every piece of baggage, so it would be cheaper just to rent.

dcb23 02-11-11 06:44 AM

enjoy the tropics Fletch!

Cold but still conditions, amazing how much better the ride in was with fully inflated tires and no headwind. Starting to be lighter and lighter each morning. Cheers all.

I'm feeling ya, man. I threw on an extra layer myself, thermo said 27 but it felt like 15 with the wind. Second time I had a frozen bottle when I got to work :)

However, I put on a Nashbar rigid MTB fork on the commuter last night, and man! The upright riding position is nice. Much more comfortable on my hands. I raised the stem around 100mm, might drop it down a bit, but it was nice. Steering compared to the old squishy fork was amazing!!

gecho 02-11-11 07:40 AM

Fantastic ride in this morning. -2C with a 35km/h tailwind, I probably could have just worn my baselayer shirt. Low clouds plus a little bit of fresh snow made visibility on the MUP very good. With any luck the snow on the roads will be slush rather that brown sugar for the ride home.

Fizzaly 02-11-11 07:42 AM

19f Nice ride little to no wind, and for some reason I was a little more awake than I normally am.

tarwheel 02-11-11 08:03 AM

Coldest commute in a while with temps in lower 20s F. I know it's cold when my water bottle freezes. Catching nearly every red light on my route didn't help matters, particularly the one with the sensor that wouldn't detect my bike. I sat through 3 light cycles waiting for the red to change to green, and it didn't trip until a car pulled up behind me. Grrrrr.... I can't run that light because it's a busy intersection, plus my eyeglasses fogged up waiting so long for the light to change.

EKW in DC 02-11-11 09:17 AM

Brilliant way to start a Friday. Mid 20s, no wind, bright sun. Perfectly comfortable and not a drop of sweat until I stepped inside the heated building.

I felt like I could have ridden for hours and hours. Ideally I would have. Sadly, this was a commute, not a recreational ride, which isn't to say it wasn't still fun! :)

I_like_cereal 02-11-11 10:50 AM

Nice morning, 35 F. No wind, thankfully. We get the 30 mph winds out here that make you stand still.
Beautiful sunrise.

Bud Bent 02-11-11 11:59 AM

18 degrees as I rode to work today, but at least the ice was pretty much gone. I only managed to ride three days this week. We're supposed to get a stretch of much warmer weather starting next week and I'm certainly looking forward to it.

BACK IN THE SADDLE! PRAISE JEBUS!

so after last week's blizzard to end all blizzards and then this week's arctic blast of frigid, frigid temps, i hadn't ridden my bike into work since monday, jan. 31, but that all gloriously changed this morning. i woke up and my outdoor thermometer said "20 degrees" and i jumped up and shouted "game on". next week temps are forecast to be in the mid-freaking-40s! i'm gonna be riding in shorts on monday, and yesterday it was 5 degrees when i woke up. stay wacky, chicago weather.

biking to work makes everything so much better. life makes sense again.

Ipedaltahoe 02-11-11 06:56 PM

great ride today, it was beautiful out and only 18F so it was great. Ride home was even better, sunny and warm.

Rothaí 02-13-11 03:12 AM

First commute in a month. And a bit of a slog (my iPhone Cyclemeter app (which is great !) said 2nd slowest time yet...but at least I'm back in the saddle.
Wet roads but not raining....the usual heavy backpack after a month off. It all gets easier from here on !

rsmillbern 02-14-11 06:56 AM

9° C and clear in the Cologne area

My 1st day commuting this year. New bike, new plan, new routine!

Again, good job. Just roll with it!

Commute this morning was not bad at all... littel foggy, but that means no wind. About 38°F and I didn't even have to wear a jacket, which really surprised me. New rigid fork is working excellent, very noticeable on sprints... feels like the bike is pulling me along, instead of me pushing it.

My new upright riding position is a Godsend. I may be measurably slower, if at all, but my hands, back, and butt are so relieved!! No hand pain or numbness, and I feel great on the bike again.
