48f Very strong winds which if course are variable so a combo of head and cross wind, light sprinkle halfway.

We are slipping into another drought in NC, but it sure makes for nice commuting weather. My mileage is way up since mid-January, over 600 miles in the past month, due to lack of rain, sleet, snow. Might just be able to bike to work every day this week with dry weather and mild temps in the forecast all week.

Once again, I got stuck driving today... co-worker is out sick, and I have to stay late to cover his overlap, and wife goes to work tonight, so I have to drive to get home in time to watch the kids. Ugh. But man, it killed me to drive, the weather is so nice outside!

Otherwise not a bad ride in, though it was gonna be cold so I overbundled. There was a fire somewhere downtown in DC, smelled all sorts of smoke coming down the Mall. The smoke was from a fire at Ronald Reagan Bldg. Closed down 14th St for a while apparently. |
34F this morning and sunshine, I and the rest of the freds were stacked up 3 deep at the lights and I think I lost my first cat6 race.
Good to be back on the bike. |
Great riding weather this morning. The wife got me some new shorts (Performance Ultras) that have some great padding for Valentine's Day. It was the perfect ride untill I noticed my back tire trying to slide out from under me on a turn. Pulled over and changed the flat, only to have the rear go flat again five minutes later. I found the tiny peice of glass on the second tube change. No more spare tubes so I hope the ride home does not turn into a walk. Gotta put some more spares in my spare stuff drawer up here at the office.

38F and clammy

Nice ride in this morning, the rain stopped and it was about 4C/40F for the ride in. Still way behind my target mileage for the year. The bad weather keeps me from using the trail-a-bike with my son.

Around 30 degrees this AM and all calm after yesterday's windstorm. I tried to ride past a spot where there was a windswept wildfire yesterday but I saw no burnmarks or anything....this PM should provide time to investigate some.

First ride in at least a month this morning. Beautiful weather - sunny, 40s. Saw a hawk roosting just 15 feet from the MUP and passed a small herd of deer only 10 feet from the trail. The turtles and frogs will be out soon.
Forgot my lock, so I get to gaze adoringly at my bike in my office all day today. |
22 mile detour this morning. Glorious.

underestimated the rain, feet got soaked

Hoping to make it home this evening before this all hits:
...STRONG THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS THE LOWLANDS OF WESTERN WASHINGTON TODAY... THE AIR MASS IS COLD AND UNSTABLE AND WINDS ALOFT CONTAIN A GOOD DEAL OF WIND SHEAR. THIS COMBINATION SUPPORTS THE FORMATION OF ROTATING THUNDERSTORMS THAT MAY PRODUCE COLD-AIR FUNNEL CLOUDS...SMALL HAIL...AND WIND GUSTS TO 45 MPH. THE COLD AND UNSTABLE AIR WILL STREAM INTO THE AREA THROUGH THIS EVENING. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL BE MONITORING THE SITUATION CLOSELY AS IT UNFOLDS AND WILL ISSUE STATEMENTS AND WARNINGS AS NEEDED. WE ARE ACTIVATING THE SKYWARN SPOTTER NETWORK AT THIS TIME. PLEASE CALL THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IF YOU SEE UNUSUAL CONVECTIVE ACTIVITY. |
My legs are still toast from the 107 miles I did Sunday, so I've had nothing for yesterday and today's commutes. The 20+ mph headwind for the ride home this afternoon didn't help. All I could do was spin. It took me well over an hour to go 12 miles..........sheesh.
Riding home in shorts and short sleeves on this 75 degree afternoon, you'd never guess that it was 18 degrees when I rode to work Friday morning. |
The Cologne comute is clear and cool, near perfect weather!

I need to get out on the road earlier, have a long day so was out the door by 05:00, upper 30s I'd say, no wind, no traffic, perfect ride in. |
I did my 14 mile reverse commute this morning from downtown to suburb at 20 degrees F with an approximate headwind of about 7 mph. I was off the bike for about five days up til last Saturday due to a upper respiratory viral illness, and the symptoms were below the neck until then, but now I’m fine but with some laryngitis—that gets sympathy whereas unapparent bodily aches and pains don’t.
The Winter Cycling Forum is pretty dormant now after the flurry of threads during the repeated snow storms and frigid temps of January; I guess there’s not much more to say, though I believe we’ve passed the depth of winter. The main thoroughfares I ride are dry enough for my pristine road bike, but previous safe shoulders are now obliterated by frozen snow banks, slightly melted to only about three feet high, with occasional ice patches extending out a foot or two. Even on my reverse direction, when I leave after 6 AM I have to deal with tight road conditions. I’ve found that cars tend to pass in bunches coordinated by the traffic lights, like a bolus of swallowed food. I have adopted the technique of what I call “bolus riding.’’ I just pull over into a driveway and let a bolus of cars pass. It’s my impression that the cagers are more peeved than usual towards cyclists under these protracted contracted road conditions. I’d like to think it’s because we’re the only ones having fun out there. :D So I practice bolus riding, heretical to Vehicular Cyclists I’m sure, to maintain this uneasy truce with the cars, and keep my commute enjoyable. |
A very fast commute today at -6C. Clear roads the whole way, I did the ride in 43min at an average speed of 21km/h. The clear roads were fun while they lasted, snow is supposed to start this morning. Over the next two days we are supposed to get about 20cm.
I had one guy honk as he buzzed me today. It was before 6am and virtually no other traffic, the car and bus ahead of him had no problem going around without making a scene. I guess I really inconvenienced him forcing him to rotate his steering wheel a few inches. |
48f still warm and still wearing shorts, forecast said 80% chance of rain turned out to be completely wrong, weather channel also said 5-10 winds from the SE, which was also wrong I would say 15-20mph winds from the N. Stupid weatherchannel:)

Had an absolutely gorgeous commute today. Was 54 F, clear skies, slight tailwind, so I took the long route and enjoyed every minute of it.
When I got to work, one of the forklift drivers reported me as a tresspasser, and Tom (the HR guy, he knows I bike commute) came by to check if it was me. We had a good laugh, and then I sat down to check my email inbox, and everything went to crap. Just waiting for 4:00 now. |
I had a pretty good commute in as well. Strong tailwind, a tad over 60 degrees. I can't believe we had snow and ice a couple weeks ago.
The trip home will be a slog with a 17 mph headwind. :( |
Cold start (30 F) to what is supposed to be a very warm day with high in the 60s. My commute felt much colder than usual because the red lights really slammed me today. I caught every long light on my route, including one that refuses to sense my bike -- so I sat through 3 light cycles before it changed when a car pulled up beside me. This is the second time it's happened this week at the same light. I either need to find another route or figure out a way to trip the sensor. Very frustrating. Plus it gets very cold sitting at a red light for 5+ minutes.

Today is a weird day... 61 this morning; the high will be 66. That's about it- no change.
|
Temps in the mid-30s again for the AM commute, so it was day two of shorts, just shorts - no tights/base layer apart from the underwear worn under athletic shorts of cargo shorts. T-shirt and fleece on top. Been super comfortable. Funny how perception of temperature and how the body reacts to it change with the seasons. A 35 degree morning in November or early December probably would have been solidly in "must wear tights" territory.
Construction on the south end of the 14th Street Bridge and the Humpback Bridge on the GW Pkwy are wreaking havoc on the intersection of the bridge and the Mount Vernon Trail. (Here and here.) It's not the end of the world by any stretch, but it is certainly a MUCH less than ideal configuration. The speed bumps were added yesterday. BS. |
