38F, sunny/rainy/whatever

I had been having a really fast ride, hit all the lights, enjoying life, then at about the 1.5 mile to go mark, a mudpatch on a trail I usually aim for the center of had, over the weekend, been filled w/ something like charcoal briquets; I tapped the brake at the wrong moment, locked the wheel, went up and over into a faceplant.

The worst part of it was that I had been going so fast that I went down w/ a full cup of coffee which, now that I am at work, only went down about a quarter in the time it took me to get the bike back upright. So it could have been worse.

which is nice.

(sorry, I can't leave a caddyshack reference hanging like that)

we've got a stalled spring here in chicago as well. 33 degrees and cold winds right off the lake. supposed to be getting incrementally warmer each day this week, so that's something to look forward to i guess. despite the cold, i'm still riding with shorts because i refuse to ride in pants in late march. this cold nonsense is unacceptable and i'm am going to will warmer weather into existence with my bold shorts display.

What a beautiful ride today, sunny and a balmy 30F, supposed to get up to 46 today and lets hope the snow will melt.

jdgesus 03-28-11 11:44 AM

still gotta cold.. went the shortest route possible
plus, my new garmin edge 500 wont upload to garmin connect.

maybe i am a "no-cyclometer-type-of-guy" after all

JPinWI 03-28-11 02:31 PM

Back at it!

Cold! 16F....But no wind...Started back on the full 17 mile commute after 4 months off and a weeks delay. Let the games begin! I tried the bags over my carhart socks and my feet did get cold eventually but they weren't the coldest part of my body.

FrenchFit 03-28-11 03:35 PM

Gad, I almost got hit twice within 10 minutes. I did a left turn, under light control, along side cars turning left, into a bike lane..and there is some dufus on a steel dreadnaught bike going the wrong way right down the center of the lane at like 15mph! Yikes, it was close.

Further up through downtown area, car passes me then decides he sees a nice parking place, runs me to the severe right into parked cars, gets in front then hits his brakes and stops. It looked worse than it was, but I'm left having to maneuver into the middle of the street in traffic to get around this guy before he reverses back into me. Apparently, he's late for lunch and just had to get that spot.

Feels like 70 degrees and the suns a'shining. All and all, no complaints.

Commuting this morning was brutal in the wind, but it helped this afternoon. My average speed coming home was actually faster than going to school for the first time ever, which is crazy because the trip home includes 458 ft more climbing elevation. 33F and sunny with winds from the WNW @ 20mph gusting to 31mph this morning. For this afternoon/evening it was 43F and sunny with winds from the WNW @ 19mph gusting to 35mph.

Was nearly killed by an SUV that was trying to speed through a changing/red light.. as I was stopping for said red light in front of him. Luckily I wasn't two feet to my left.. The guy was apologetic, but it still scared the **** outta me. Then a block later, some lady tried to switch lanes into me. Not the best start to my day. About to ride home from work in a bit.. hopefully it goes much smoother.

gecho 03-28-11 08:27 PM

Nice tail wind on the ride home, a good wind just demands that you ride fast. 37 minutes for my 15.5km ride home with a top speed of 38km/h on my studded tires. I would have been even faster but there is so much speed sapping sand on the side of the roads, plus one really icy section in the shade that won't be melting anytime soon.

While I was waiting at a stop sign with a foot down, I had people on the main through road stop for me again. I can't stand when they do that. Having people in 1 or 2 of the 4 lanes stop just creates an unsafe situation for everyone.

Incorrect. I got out of work a little late. The wind didn't feel too bad, but the further I rode, the stronger it got. Not awful, mind you, but definitely didn't set a speed record going home.

jdgesus 03-28-11 09:17 PM

ran into a guy i knew on the way home.. i saw him in front of me, i speed up to catch him, and he thought i was cat 6'n him.
he sped up.. on his carpet fiber race bike.. he was putting 100% into it, i was like "NICKKKKKK".. he slowed down

had a nice ride to with him the rest of the way

Another cold morning at 25 F ( -4 C). Maybe next week will be better.

Fizzaly 03-29-11 06:45 AM

39f Windy, but the air is finally starting to feel less crisp which is a good sign spring may be here. Weather forecast is calling for 70f by the end of this week (I don't believe it but it would be nice)

I'm back! I haven't commuted by bike since the middle of January. Too much snow on the only direct way to work, the bike path, and it's not plowed. Lots of 2.5 mile hikes to the city bus, punctuated by driving a couple times a week. Sigh.

Anyway... 28F this morning. I still have the Ice Spikers mounted. The bike path alternates between clear pavement and hard-packed snow and/or ice. More clear than snow/ice though, so that's good.

There's one section that is always the worst, and it didn't fail to disappoint. I'd guess there's at least a foot of snow still there, and it's so solid that I can ride on top of it. It degraded to post-holes, ruts, and general dangerousness, so I walked for a bit.

Here's the Trek just after the worst part, where I started riding again.

First commute on my new Salsa Casseroll. It rode great but I still need to tweak some of the adjustments for fit. Very cold morning for this time of year, about 30 F, and hopefully the last gasp of winter in NC. I stupidly got "scared" out of commuting yesterday by the local forecasters who were calling for snow and sleet. We got a few harmless flurries but the sky was clear by mid-morning. Managed to squeeze in a ride from home after work, but I hate to miss to bike commutes, particularly with gas prices at $3.60/gallon.

dcb23 03-29-11 07:14 AM

Rode in with a sore throat and a headwind. OK Spring, step it up.

truman 03-29-11 08:04 AM

Slower than usual. I just rejiggered my rigid, singlespeed 29er into a geared hardtail for an upcoming bikepacking trip on the Kokopelli Trail.

Now I'm riding it to make sure it's dialed for fit and function, as well as working out details for carrying gear. So, instead of zipping along on the Vaya, I'm sitting up in the wind on 2.1 tires. Still beats driving, though.

Hope the predicted rain misses me going home.

I_like_cereal 03-29-11 09:25 AM

Cloudy and cool. 10-15 mph head wind. Good fast ride on wet pavement.
New Tubes+New rim+New Hub = New Day!!!:D

Arrived at work 10 minutes earlier than normal.

45F, rainy, kind of miserable

I've tried to convince myself I like g*****ss and rain through the power of self suggestion.....it's kinda working.

Good ride today as always. I like the fact that it is a "reverse" commute so I get to stare at traffic backed up in the other direction while only a few cars pass me on my side.

caloso 03-29-11 10:53 AM

Gorgeous. After weeks of rain it is a beautiful blue sky day.

z90 03-29-11 10:55 AM

30 degrees, so it still feels like winter, but not bitter cold at least. I am ready for 50 degrees. C'mon spring!
