Wet and slushy... will probably turn to black ice before I go home but that is what studded tyres are for.

Great commute home at 62F and sunny with winds from the NNE @ 8mph. On Berkshire Ave, a company van went by in the left lane while I was in the right lane and the passenger said "a-hole." It actually made me laugh because I was having such a great ride. To cancel it out, later on a car that was going by on the road that I was waiting to pull out onto beeped and the passenger gave me a thumbs up :) Right before I got home, I made a quick stop at my friend's work to chat with her right before she had to go in for 2nd shift.

Cold & damp but a perfect 18 mph tailwind on the way in. You guessed it - an 18 mph headwind the whole way home. At least it was dry. I took out some spacers to lower my bars. Probably only 1.5" total but it makes a noticeable difference.

Damn glad I no longer live in the great white north. I have been wearing shorts for weeks now.
Today was a very nice ride on my 84 Trek 420. Fallen in love with this stupid $40 bike. LOL

jdgesus 04-14-11 08:09 PM

huge huge and huge and heavy and thick rain.... but it stopped 5min before i left :D

bored117 04-14-11 10:54 PM

Wonderful weather, happy leg even after interval training yesterday and a rush run to train station today morning. And... wham
on the way back uphill, I notice I just can't keep my HR at zone 2 at all no matter how granny gear I use... And going 2mph slower than usual. I stop and look behind and of course...
Tire is almost out of air... Found slow leak, repair... rode rest of way frustrated. 2nd flat in a week. It unfortunately takes me 30 minutes to repair this on road... (SRAM Dual drive, 20" rim with tire that just won't get on...)
Less than a year and already 3 flats on commuting...

Sixty Fiver 04-14-11 11:58 PM

The ride home was uneventful and I stayed to the streets which are just wet and a little slushy while the bikeway has a few inches of half frozen slush and snow on it as it has only been disturbed by walkers and a few cyclists.

Looks like it was a good idea to keep the extrabike's studded tyres on... spring here can bring some pretty nasty snow storms and will probably be using it a lot over this next little bit.

I made some good time and my ride home only took an extra five minutes over the usual... once that bike gets rolling it likes to stay rolling. :)

It was so nice this morning that I streatched my 8.5km ride to about 20km. It was cool, 0° C, but sunny and the trees are in bloom along with the first rapeseed fields, soon it will be a bright yellow canvas for my ride to work!

fletchh 04-15-11 04:48 AM

A good ride in at 43 F ( 6 C). Traffic was lighter today, of course the worst is going home, as cars come out of everywhere.

Today was super muggy, and it was pretty hot this afternoon (27C). I was sweating buckets today, but it still felt great - an awesome end to the first week of cycle commuting for me. 3 days on the bike this week, and I've already lost 1.5 kilograms. :) Can't wait to keep going - just need to get an adjustment on the rear derailleur, switch to my clipless pedals, and get the headset tightened up a little (noticed a slight wobble today) and I'll be all set for next week.

Happy Windsday Eeyore! Wow! ..."the East wind has traded places with the West wind and shook things up all over the 100 acre woods"...My morning commute is mostly to the North and West so I had some awesome tailwinds BUT...the forecast calls for 50 mph winds this afternoon. That could be a show stopper.

25F / -3C this morning. Sunny. I'm fed up with my rear brake. It's a hydraulic disc. I've never been able to get it to be completely drag-free. Now it's starting to seize up when it's below freezing. To the point where the last ride I did in the teens (F), it would actually lock the tire if I walked the bike on snow. This morning it was chirping or "groaning" at low speeds. Yes, I know it needs to be bled, but the perpetual dragging issue (even when warm) has made me decide to just replace it with a cable-operated unit.

The front brake (also hydraulic) has never given me a lick of trouble.

And I'm also growing weary of Mother Nature's mood swings. Be cold, or be warm. Pick one and only one!

But! TGIF! :D

44f Strong head wind + waking up late= cranky morning

tarwheel 04-15-11 07:18 AM

I was running late this morning already, and then realized my front tire was flat as I was wheeling my bike out of the garage. That was weird because I rarely ever get front flats, and I suspect that the valve went bad. So, I swapped all of my gear to another bike rather than trying to fix the flat, and was only 15 minutes late getting to work.

The weather has been beautiful in NC all week except for a rainy day on Tuesday, with chilly mornings in upper 40s and afternoon highs in the 70s. My only complaint with the weather is that pollen levels have been ridiculously high, as they usually are here in early-mid April. My voice has been froggy all week and I've had trouble swallowing, presumably due to all of the pollen I've ingested riding 15 hours over the past week.

40F, raining. Found a more circuitous street route that lets me ride faster than the MUP but still leaves me less cage-exposed than the most direct street routes

jdgesus 04-15-11 11:12 AM

finding new routes is one of my fav things.

forecast says rain, but its dry, so im living on the edge and road the bike without fenders.......

billyymc 04-15-11 11:18 AM

Nobody told me, but apparentlly it is "National throw a banana peel out the window" week. I passed dozens in the last two days.

CptjohnC 04-15-11 12:09 PM

Slow ride today. Weather was just about perfect - ~50F and warming. Traffic was also just about perfect - -if you want to paint a still life. I had to do more weaving in and out between the cars (to avoid the big trucks next to the concrete abutments and the like) than I like, and that slowed down what is usually a fast downhill. Then there was a fishing tournament!?! blocking a portion of the towpath, causing a minor detour and some angst as I worried about being hooked by some casting angler.

The rest of the slowdown might have been tied to light timing, but I suspect I also wasn't pushing. I plan to ride the long way home this evening :-)

Steely Dan 04-15-11 01:24 PM

i didn't ride today because of after work stuff going on, but yesterday i set a new persoanl best time getting home due to the monumentally strong tailwind pushing me along. my 15 mile commute typically takes me ~50 minutes in neutral wind, but yesterday i got home in just 41 minutes! i felt like i was flying; i was in my highest gear (53x11 with a 700 wheel) and i was spinning out! i've never ridden that fast on flat ground in my life. the winds off the lake were around 40 knots, gusting to 50 and greater, and they were right at my tail.

it's really, really fun to go really, really fast.

Chalupa102 04-15-11 05:35 PM

Great commutes this morning and afternoon. 40F and sunny with tail/crosswinds from the NE @ 12mph this morning. 53F and sunny with light head/crosswinds from the NE @ 5mph coming home this afternoon. Switched from Marathon Supremes to BA tires last night. I'm convinced that the BAs are a more comfortable ride and seem faster as well. When I had the fastest commutes last week, it was with BAs. I had switched to the Supremes to see if they were any better, but I wasn't too impressed so the BAs are back on.

Forgot to mention that I have a new parking spot. They took the original bike rack away at the front gate where I was parking at my school, so now I get to park right behind the police office at their bike rack. The original one got mangled because a snow plow hit it during the Winter, but it was still somewhat usable. They're planning to get a brand new one, but I think it's actually more convenient to park at the police one. Hopefully they let me keep parking there.

Grim 04-15-11 05:44 PM

Bit gloomy all day. Made it home before the storms got here. Suppose to be gone by dawn so I should be able to get in a nice morning ride to the farmers market if its not too windy.

Wow, been on vacation for a week and have missed my forum and commute. Back on bike tomorrow. Rode a bit while in San Francisco...for all of you who ride and take public transportation I say Wow! Had to do it one day and hated it. Standing at a bus stop instead of riding made me nuts. Then having to exit the back and run to the front to get my bike before they take off, I would rather ride up and down the hills on my single speed. Had some fun trying to ride my daughter on my single speed with me. She will never knock padded bike shorts again, but a bike rider she is not :(
