40F grey dry. Took a 12 mile route instead of usual 7. Only took 45 min vs usual 30, much generally zippier route, even with a mile of flagger-mediated one-lane construction zone. Oh yes, first commute in of the year in shorts. The time has come!

Radar indicated that the rain had passed by the time I left for work this AM, but apparently not... Rain was still coming down when I left. Borrowed MTB I'm commuting on has no fenders, so I arrived at work with a bit of spray and road grit all over my shorts and backpack. Still a nice ride in.

Plan on stopping at hardware store on the way home for $2 of p-clips, nuts, and bolts so I can slap my rear rack on and get back to using my rack trunk or panniers again.

I was lucky to miss the rains. Cool, just above 50 this am. More green filling in.

gecho 04-13-11 07:00 PM

Not the best day of riding. The new rear derailleur the LBS installed was horribly tuned and kept slipping out of gears and missing gears. I didn't have much better luck friction shifting as I had a hard time hearing the derailleur due to the wind. Having been off the bike for a few weeks it felt odd switching from a mountain bike position.

On the way home I almost ran into a rope the city strung across the MUP. I was looking to the side at the overflowing creek and only noticed the rope at the last second and was able to skid to a stop. Thinking back, I really should have taken it down.

It was a race against an approaching storm - gusty winds, etc. At some point I determined that I was roasting in all of my rain gear, and I stopped to shed everything except my tights and longsleeve top - it was warm, say 55F. It is supposed to snow tonight.
I got a cell pic along the way and posted it in the "what do you look like" thread. I don't have many biking pics. :)

Just got in the garage door before **** hit the fan tonight

feel bad for anyone headed straight west after about 5:00 p.m.

Beautiful and 16 this morning, hot this afternoon (27!).

Almost ran out of energy on my commute home this afternoon - maybe I should eat some snacks before I head home next time. :)

A good ride in today, at 43 F ( 6 C), and looking for a warmer ride home. No rain forecasted for at least 2 days.

 Holy $(@*. I'd have cut it in half with the Leatherman I carry in my bag. Very dangerous. What was the point of it?

A little bit damp, but sunny this morning. Temps in the high 30s, (2 or 3C). No wind. The worms are coming out of the ground now so I try to avoid them. :o

dcb23 04-14-11 06:21 AM

Another perfect morning, temps around 50, slight headwind, more green canopy filling in on city streets.

FunkyStickman 04-14-11 06:30 AM

Great ride in, mid 60's, slightly overcast. Dyno lights are the bomb. Took my "long" 12 mile route in for the first time today, I usually go that way in the PM. Ran across a good friend who cycles, didn't realize it was him till I was halfway down the road. Overall, loved it. Might get a slight drizzle on the way home.

Fizzaly 04-14-11 06:38 AM

31f I'm sick of the forever undecided weather, if it's going to be below freezing stay that way or if it's going to be warm stay that way, but one or the other weather.

There is a lot of flooding on the path and the rope was to keep people from going the direction I came from. I avoided the flooded underpass by crossing a street and riding across a field.

This soccer field I approached was much more flooded that yesterday. I was able to cut to the right to re-join the path.

A beautiful AM in the nation's capital. Temps around 50 and brilliant sunshine. Ride home's supposed to be about 70 with a slight tailwind. Gotta like the sounds of that.

Hardware store yesterday didn't even know what a p-clip is. After explaining what it is, they said they didn't have any and suggested going to Home Depot. Oh well. Don't feel like going out there so I may just put up with the backback until next weekend when the new bike complete w/ rack is all put together.

Great commute this morning at 41F and crosswinds from the N @ 6mph. When I got into Ludlow, especially on Chapin St there was extremely thick fog. I'm talking, this fog was so thick it was a hard time seeing more than 1/4 mile away. I was running all my lights and could not believe all the idiot drivers with no lights on at all. The craziest part was when vehicles were passing me, I'm sure they had no idea if an approaching vehicle with no lights was coming at the same time because they wouldn't have really been able to see them. Luckly that never happened though. When will people realize that their lights are often times not for their personal use; they're so the other people on the roads can see them?

Mardmakarm 04-14-11 09:20 AM

Have to change front tire from size 38 to 32, so i can use full covered fender at front. Luckily that i already had 32 tire, and full covered rear fender is working well with size 38.

So much water during Songkran days in Thailand. :)

Sixty Fiver 04-14-11 09:37 AM

Won't have to go anywhere until later this afternoon and the snow is coming in sideways and the forecast was calling for 2 inches of the white stuff.

Good thing I have not de-studded all my bikes.

zoltani 04-14-11 10:50 AM

sun, rain, sun, rain, sun/rain, rain, rain.....the weather really couldn't decide what it wanted to do this morning.

Last night I parked outside of the record store, looked up, could see the moon and some stars, so I didn't bother covering the brooks. Sleet/freezing rain 20 minutes later, helmet was full of slush since I locked it to the bike. Craziness

Great commute the other day, took this shot of a rainbow going into the clouds at the end of the river. I think it lined up quite nicely!

Crap. I was thinking about riding in today. Last night Intellicast said 10% chance of rain this afternoon. This morning they changed that to 40-50% with thunder showers. Meh. Commuted twice this week already, so I decided to drive. I just checked Intellicast again and they're back to 10%. Bastages.

HardyWeinberg 04-14-11 11:57 AM

40F gray. Biked w/ the kids to school 2nd time this week (they biked w/ mom on other days) so I was running later than usual

daijoubu2k8 04-14-11 12:01 PM

Yesterdays commute home went much better, sliding the seat back a centimeter was a big help for my knee. Raced home through the Hell of North Burnaby in the rain to prepare for the bike wash this weekend. If I'm going to pay them they better actually have something to wash off. Road bikes never get dirty enough to justify the wash.

canyoneagle 04-14-11 12:03 PM

No ride for me today. I have an all-day meeting at a downtown hotel. I called last night to make arrangements for access to the health club so I could shower and change, but no go. The manager told me he couldn't give me access without a room.
The hotel is only 4 miles from my house, and I decided the hassle of doing a sponge bath in the conference restroom would be more trouble than it is worth for a 4 mile ride in.

I'll go to the gym after work to get the heart going.

Back in the saddle after over a year

Well, I have many excuses, non valid if you are a hardcore biker. The transistion from TX to TN to NH was hard. NH roads and weather are a challenge. Lost job 10 miles from home, found job 40 miles from home. Life happens.

But, this morning I woke up at 5:50 and put on those bike clothes that lay dormant in the drawer. 39F (4C) and pulled my crap together. Put bike and panniers in car and drove 30 miles. Parked at Fire Department and headed off. Crap...forgot helmet! Got stupid and rode anyway. Here is the ride. Not fun starting off with cold wind and no body heat. Not fun going home but at least I don't have to worry about sweat on the drive home!

So, each time I ride I save 23% of the drive. If I can make it a daily habit I will reduce commute from 780 miles to 600. And shed some weight and live longer!

Note to file: Broken spoke in rear needs fixing. Remember helmet. Eat better food.
