A dab of caulking around the inside until you're sure the weight is staying off and can have the ring resized.

I used to see a ton of reflectors off of pedals during the summer months, now that I've lost one of the reflectors off my jack****, I can't find even one on my daily commute! :(

This past week I found a pair of new-condition Planet Bike fenders off to the side of the MUP, a black jersey, a knit hat, a nice pair of pliers and a huge, raw steak lying next to its paper wrapper. Some coyote is going to be very happy.

Good idea, I'll try that. Unfortunately, this ring can't be resized. I have to send it in for a replacement in a different size from the manufacturer.

Found a log hanging off a telephone pole guy wire and not a tree big enough for it nearby, I believe it's still there too.

OK, this one has me stumped...

To the guy taking the wheels from the obvious accident scene, just had to chime in. Bad Karma on you bub. Not cool. Not cool at all.

I found a saw in the middle of the road last week. I took it home with me.

Unopened beer or liquor, often along rural roads where it was tossed out the window at night by an underage person when they noticed they were being followed by the cops.
Assorted clothing, found a Subway restaurant employees cap yesterday. The only other item of clothing I ever bothered to pick up was a nice windbreaker that was lying along the highway clean and dry.
Perhaps the most interesting was a youth sized Diamondback MTB in excellent condition. It was obviously dumped/abandoned so I contacted the local PD and took it in. It wasn't claimed within 60 days and was donated to a local charity.

There is one thing that I have to wonder about in regards to all of the clothing that is "lost" along the roads and/or trails/bike paths. I get that a certain amount of it is lost because the owner didn't store it in their car/trailer/pannier bags well. But if one stops and thinks about it there is really too much clothing being found on the side of the road/trail/path to be lost in this manner.

I mean if "all" of the clothing that we find along the road/trail/path was lost because the owner didn't secure it in their car/pickup/bicycle then why don't we find more articles of clothing in any given area? It almost seems more likely that the owner/former owner has taken it off and thrown it on the side of the road/trail/path.

Uh, people get mad, get into fights and do things that they later regret.

Agreed, also what a lot of people don't seem to understand is that temperature change can also affect how a ring(s) fits ones fingers. I nearly lost a ring that is VERY important to me because of this not too long ago. I was at a place that I frequent quite often. As I was drying my hands I didn't realize that my ring had come off in the paper-towels that I was using to dry my hands.

Good point, but one has to wonder that if it was potential evidence why wasn't it taken into "custody" by one of the officers that had responded to the crash? Or why wasn't a an officer left to "protect" it from theft?

Today I found two cows. Yes, cows. They somehow got on the wrong side of the fence, and were freaked out by the passing cars, etc. I shoo'd them from the bike lane back towards the fence (and the rest of the herd), and tried to calm them down while cars went by. Weird.

tree grows around wire, tree starts to pull the wire up, tree gets cut down (see stump on the ground).

Thought of this thread as I found an odd thing on my commute tonight. A brand new shiny meat thermometer. For those of us who cook, a cool find but still a bit of an oddity.

A nice dead-blow mallet for the tool box.
Women's bra and panties (used to find lots of these on the old roads around my home town!! Lusty bunch of rednecks!)
Nice synthetic wood 4x4 to use for my trailer tongue block.

About 3500 miles away from the nice steak I found... bummer. :)

You're assuming that officers arrived on the scene. Just one story, but a good friend of mine was tandem riding with his wife and on a downhill they had a front tire blow out and wrecked going @25mph. They were badly cut & scraped up and a motorist came by right after it happened and took them to the emergency room. They had enough wits to stash the bike in some bushes. Sounds like something similar could have happened here...

I found a mini backpack on the side of the road on my ride into work. I pulled over and started to inspect it and quickly discovered it was filled with fecal matter. Enough said.

I found unfolded ups boxes near the Dumbarton bridge.

A NASA Space Shuttle. Parked in the middle of the road. Outside the American Airlines Center. Covered in signatures.

The strangest for me was an (unfired) 40mm grenade shell. I took it to the local police station because the dispatcher didn't believe me when I told her what I had found. Yes, this was pre-2001.

TRUMPHENT 01-30-12 08:43 PM

I just found a pkg of 8 strips of reflective 2" wide reflective tape. Each strip is 11" red and 7"white DOT C2. Someone in a car had already run over it. This rates as my best find ever! It may not be the most unusual. That red tape will eventually be installed on the insides of the fork and chain and seatstays. I've already put reflective tape in the most obvious places.

I turned down a street in the northern tip of Manhattan to avoid stopping at a light (completely legal, btw), and I saw some money blowing across the street, about $25. It was windy so I figured I should continue riding downwind, which wasn't where I was going, and lo and behold I picked up another $16 over the next two blocks. I make enough money that it doesn't even faze me to pick up $41, but it was just the fact that I thought to follow the wind. Usually I just give found money to the first homeless person I see but I kept this just for the story.
