Help me shop for a rear rack.

I am building up a Soma Double Cross. The bike to rule them all. I dont "plan" on touring, its going to be used for commuting, long rides and bad roads. Sometimes to get groceries I have a pair of Ortlieb back rollers I am looking for a rack that can hold more then 35lbs that costs <$50.
Whats your favorite rack? At a decent price.

For that price I'd suggest either the Racktime Addit (made by Tubus, exact same as steel models but aluminum), Topeak Super Tourist, or Hebie 130. Good luck!

I second the Addit. I got mine for $60 from REI. They had to back order it but it was worth the wait.

Now if only I'd had as good luck getting panniers for it, LOL!

Topeak Super Tourist or Super Tourist DX. If you intend on carrying panniers AND a top load the lower rails on the DX are useful although they hold the panniers out about 3/4" from the vertical struts, not sure if that's much of an issue. If you aren't planning on using fenders a rack with a flat plate is nice to keep water/mud from hitting your backside.

I have the Axiom Odyssee on my bike and it has been solid. However the older model had some problems with certain panniers attaching to it which I believe have been corrected.

I have a couple of Jandd racks I've bought from the specials section of their website - definitely under $50 and they work fine. I like my Tubus and Nitto racks better, and they are certainly more sturdy, but if you want to spend less they're not an option. Of course, if you're spending the money on a new Double Cross build, maybe you want to have a little nicer rack...just my thought, though. Just about any of the racks mentioned in this thread should be enough for commuting and groceries.

I like the Topeak Super Tourist. Having second, lower rails for panniers is great. I will never buy a rack that doesn't have that feature.

I'm also a fan of the Racktime AddIt. $51 and free shipping here: https://www.therandonneeshop.com/products/show/61-addit (I've bought from this store in the past; they seem good.)

It's in and out of stock pretty frequently, so you may have to wait a bit. Email them and they can probably tell you when they'll have more.

Nice rack indeed I think I considered that one, but there was no disc-compatible version. I want to build up Surly Troll some time, this might just be the rack for it.

I bought mine based on the rated capacity, I got a Transit rated at 25kilos, for $19 at Performance, normally $25 but this one had been opened so I bargained....

Ohh it's a disc model so it's wide....

I think the Axiom racks are a very good bang for the buck. I have the Streamliner DLX on my Double Cross.

You're supposed to use the Tubus spacers with it for disc applications: https://www.bikebagshop.com/tubus-spa...ks-p-1063.html

I'm thinking hard about an Addit and their large or small Trunkit bag (for "riding around" things), along with some panniers for commuting.

If you want a more traditional rack, Racktime makes the Standit available for $35 here. The round stays are far better than flat stay racks.

What I love is the channel that it has for the Topeak MTX trunk bags. The bag slides in and clips the the front of the rack. Very neat. Here's a pic of my rack/bag:

Soma makes a pretty nice rack in your price range that would be good for your intended purposes. The Axiom Streamliner is about the same price but heavier and sturdier. I bought my rack from England because the British cycling websites seem to offer a lot more options for better prices (eg, Wiggle, SJS Cycles). I ended up getting a Tubus Cargo and it is probably overkill for my purposes (mainly commuting), but I wanted something strong enough to handle panniers and heavier loads in case I ever do any loaded touring. Also checkout Velo-orange.com, which has a nice selection of racks for good prices.

The SnapIt attachment mechanism for the TrunkIts, while proprietary to RackTime equipment, is incredibly convenient for a commuter bag. Much better than the usual velcro and similar straps. (I have a TrunkIt Large.) There's an additional widget that will let you lock the bag to the rack as well. Lastly, if you can find it, you can buy just the attachment mechanism to use with standard bags or to build your own DIY container.

My favorite rack is a Bontrager Back Rack Classic. It's inexpensive, well-built, adjustable and comes in two sizes to fit large or small bike frames.

I discovered those a few weeks ago when I saw them on the website of a local distributor. They look pretty interesting, I like Toba's design on the adjustable seat stay struts.
