Racing to Work

My first commute day, back in May (after many years of noncycling), this guy blows past me so fast it looked like I was backing up. Scared the poot outta me - he kinda grunted "left" after he was already gone.

Saw him later that week from about 200 yards away. Not only could I not catch him, he flat disappeared over the hill fast.

Today, I passed his street as he approached from about 150 yards. Nice bright obnoxious high-vis yellow jacket (I was only wearing an equally obnoxious shirt - I have htfu enough to brave the cool Oregon morning breeze). Hadn't seen this flyer since my last observation in early May, but I could see that he was still cooking along like before.

I dropped his butt....he flat disappeared back there.

Who said commuting isn't fun. Gratifying, most certainly.

I plod along averaging about 15 MPH but can easily do 25 on my commuter given level terrain and smooth roads. Not that I try to pass or avoid being passed, but I find myself actually quite a bit faster than the cyclists (casual and other commuters) that I encounter. Perhaps I just like to challenge myself.

What I really hate, I mean it really gnaws ... is when I do pass and drop someone, he or she catches up to me when I stop for a light, then snickers at me and blows through the light disappearing in the distance while I continue to wait.

I always push myself when I ride to work everyday, not trying to race anyone except myself (although I'm sure the people I pass might think otherwise). I "race" to work purely for the exercise and hope that doesn't offend anyone.

I always tell myself, "just a ride." But then I start pedaling and I want to go faster, and get a real workout. The bonus was to have the guy that dropped me so bad two months ago on my route. A Bugs would say, "I'm a little stinker...."

He was probably still waking up.

So he smokes you on multiple occasions where you were trying to keep up, but then the one time you see him and pass him you call it a "win"?
Sorry bub, don't add up.
You need to get this on video - stoplight to stoplight.

I just wish I saw other riders - although lately I've been seeing a few, every now and then.

I used to push myself a lot more - particularly on the way home, but I just don't feel like it when it 105 out.

Yellow jackets aren't worth many points. Also, you want to race on the way home, not to work, so you don't show up sweaty.

funny commuter video, guy films his commute and used commentary from the TdF as narration.

I use my 34-ish mile r/t commute as training mileage so sometimes I'm doing intervals, some days it's just hammer-the-hills, other times it's just a commute and I take it easy. If people think I'm racing just because of my speed, then that's their problem. If they think they "won" because they "dropped" me when my sprint/recovery timer went off and I slowed down, then more power to them. Hooray, you won; go buy yourself a cookie.
If anyone wants to race me when it counts, the SCX, MFG, and PDX Crusade series are in the fall.

The helicopter footage @ 4:50 was too much. What a riot! Thanks for posting.
