if i take issue with anyone it's the bike designers/companys. It seems like a whole lot of marketing without substance and basically insults my intelligence. i wouldnt be surprised if you could find a comparable bike with similar features, with a different paint job for A LOT less money, but you wouldnt be able to tell your friends you bought an urban bike. the concept is foolish, i can "urbanize" any bike with the right tires and some lights. big whoop. |
Did you know that the term 'urban' was only used by one person in this thread when describing the bike? Specialized doesn't even use it on their website when they market the Source. Yes, its based on the newly redesigned 2012 Sirrus ... but what's wrong with that? The geometry of the new Sirrus is less upright and slightly more agressive than last years model. A nice change in my opinion.
The cost of the Source Eleven is the same as the bike I had previously speced out, but in one convienient package that already has everything I wanted. |
I agree. Poser bike.

Specialized sure does make sexy bikes, I'm going to be buying the Tricross for commuting pretty soon, the $1900 one most likely but I'm in a similar situation as far as parking. Because I commute 100+ miles a week and my bike is my car, I can (in my head) justify the price tag but I'm going to be so paranoid about locking it up while in school or at work. Need to look into theft insurance for cycles, see how much it costs.
|
The price is ridiculous. Also - how heavy is it? I'm not a weight weenie per se but I wouldn't pay that much for a 30 lb bike, even with fancy integrated fender/LED light combos. Does it have clearance for studded tires? And I'd prefer drop bars.
On the other hand, if price was no object I would definitely have a chain guard, internal gears, dynohub, perfectly fitted fenders and belt drive on my commuter. Some Hollywood/London celeb will probably ride around on one of these. |
I have one
If anyone has a question I've been commuting on a Source 11 for about 2 weeks now. I'm not planning on doing any sort of review, but would be glad to give my opinion. I will say that it is what I expected and am happy with the bike.
|
I've been very happy with my Globe City. Granted my rear rack is functional and it cost 1/2 the price.
|
Source 11 rack
Turns out the rack is not as decorative as the pictures would make it seem. It is mounted to the aluminum fender, which is mounted to the bike frame at two points. Based on how it feels pushing down on the rack I would actually trust the 22 lb weight limit. It should be noted, however, that the rack is much more narrow on top than is normal.
Bob J, I looked at buying the Globe City for my wife. Looks like a very nice bike with an amazing rack. We ended up going with the Raleigh Alley Way for her. |
I'm really enjoying my Source 11 so far. The Alfine components are great. The discs stop on a dime, IGH shifts perfectly, and the Gates belt drive is great. The rack isn't as useless as I had expected it to be (although I'm still planning to upgrade that). My only complaint is the saddle ... but I tend to replace the saddles on all of my bikes for something more comfortable.
The Globe City is a nice bike too. :thumb: |
Changing the rear tire
pharph,
Do you think it will be difficult to change the rear tire? I'm new to the belt drive and need to give it a trial run at home, so I'm not stuck on the road should I get a flat. I think I'll stop by the bike shop where I purchased it and ask it they have any tips before giving it a go. Besides finding out that the rack is not just decorative I was also surprised to find out that you can shift up gears by ether pushing or pulling on the shifter. I'm commuting with thick mittens and do all my shifting with my thumb without any trouble. Also surprised that you can shift 2 gears at a time with a full push. I'm still getting used to not peddling while shifting. I do like being able to shift while stopped, but wish that I could continue peddling while I shift. |
Sure is a nice bike!

If that floats your boat, then by all means buy it and ride the crap out of it.
In my personal opinion if it’s so pricey that you worry about it getting tea leaved then perhaps it’s not a good commuter? |

I think it's a nice looking bike. I'd rock it. If somebody wants to lay out that kinda cash to buy one who are we to critize thier desision. Let them have fun. I'll keep riding my Jamis Commuter 2 with a big grin on my face. I probably paid waaaaaay to much for it, ($500.00)as some will no doubt say. I don't really care. I like it and thats all that matters.:)

Is there some where reputable in the US that you can order it online, it's not available in Canada.
Thanks Greg |

I'm still loving my Source Eleven and highly recommend it. |
Hi guys, new to forums and love all the (mostly) constructive back and forth. I'm in the market for a commuter such as the Source 11, and am considering the Spot Acme as well. I was recently promoted and have had my Katy to Downtown Houston commute reduced to a mere 10 miles, allowing me to commute daily by bicycle! My current commuter, a 2009 Specialized Hardrock 29er Disc, has been ok, but lacks ALOT of what I need in a daily commuter. The price tag doesn't scare me, it will be replacing a car after all and either bike looks bad-ass!! NoTrail, I'd love to hear more about your bike, and anyone who knows anything about the Spot Acme as well.

The Spot Brand bikes are sold out until June. The only two bikes I could try were the Trek Soho and Scott SUB 10. Nothing else was in Canada or would ship here (emailed all the main brands from the Gates list). Personally I prefer the SUB 10 but it was really hard to find in XL but I did manage to buy the last one in Canada. I love the SUB 10 and I'm slowly fitting it up with Venture 10 accessories. It is sooo quiet all you hear is the wind and slight tire noise when you ride. If you hear any gear noise then its a sign of cable stretch and you just adjust the Alfine and it will be silent again. Weight wise I'm using Urban Concept 2.0 accessories so it's not going to be very heavy considering all that will be on it.
Good luck. Greg |
honestly!
A. rack looks horrible and almost useless (should be wider and be spring-loaded) B. no guards to stop straps from going into the rear wheel C. no integrated lock in the rear wheel D. no integrated pump in the back 2600 USD ... LOL some people must have different priorities than me about getting to work and back. |
