Bikes: I have five of brikes
i'm no insurance expert, but i have a father who's been in the business for 40 years, and he set me up with a home owner's policy that he said would take care of my liability and protect any of my bikes with an 80 dollar deductible.
as always though, there's the issue of whether or not it's worth it to put in a claim and potentially have your rates raised for an item that's not worth a great deal to begin with. if you have a $6,000 bike that's damaged/stolen, it's probably worth it, but i don't have one of those.

My bike is insured under my home contents insurance. By an extension of the policy, it's also covered against theft or damage anywhere in the UK. We have the national health service (though the present government seem intent on undoing this) so there are no medical bills to worry about if I was injured.

If you also have a car, make sure you have a high uninsured motorist coverage. I've been told that it will cover you if you are hit by a car while walking or on your bike. Especially since that person might take off, or not have insurance of their own. Won't cover your bike being stolen, but I'm more concerned about coverage from being hit.

I'm glad you asked. For only $20, I can insure you, for your entire life, against being abducted by aliens. Actually it's $50 if you live in New Mexico.
Go check your home-owners policy, and see if you're covered against this risk!
This get-rich-quick sheme was all fun and games, until I found out people really do sell alien abduction insurance: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_abduction_insurance

You also want replacement value coverage so if you make a claim you get what it takes to replace your bike (minus the deductible) instead of the depreciated value a fraction of that.

I've been looking into insurance too, but there's too many fine-prints and loopholes with the companies that do insure where I live.
@Monster Pete: Have your government call my government, they'll have your health care service disbanded within a fortnight, don't worry though the EBU-IMF will save us all!
@Seattle Forrest: I insure people against Ancient Mythical calamities, such as thunder-strikes from Zeus, low passes from Apollo and being speared from Poseidon... drop me a line! lol

Homeowners or renters insurance will reimburse the damage to your bike or if stolen usually on a replacement cost basis subject to the deductible. Don’t file a claim if the amount is near your deductible. You’ll lose your claim free credit and end up spending more in the long term.
Claims adjusters vary between companies. Some are helpful / some are looking for a way to screw you. If stolen, you usually need to provide some evidence of the theft. Save whatever is left of your lock. You need to specify a definitive time and place of the theft. If it’s just missing and you don’t know how or when, you’re screwed. It can even be helpful to get the name and number of somebody that knew you rode in on a bike and now its gone – somebody at school, work, a store, etc.
Don’t file a claim if it’s not your fault. The offending drivers auto insurance pays for the damage. Make sure you get the other persons insurance information. If you cause the accident, home / renters insurance will also pay for the other persons vehicle damage and/or injury under the liability coverage.
Auto insurance personal injury protection (“PIP” in some states, or “med expense” in other states) will pay for your injuries if you tangle with a vehicle. If you just biff on your own, your health insurance pays. If hit and run or the driver has no insurance, your uninsured / underinsured auto coverage will also pay for your injuries but (in most states) not your bike.

When I lived with my parents. My bike was covered under home owners insurance. I had crashed the bike, tacoed the front wheel, and "damaged" the carbon fork. The bike shop told the insurance company how much it would cost to fix. I got the money soon after. Done. I don't really know how homeowner insurance works more then that. Also the bike had to cost more the $500 or something. My Digital SLR was cover, and my borther computer.
