I made it thru about 5 years at UGA commuting by bike. That was my only form of transportation most of the way through college. It's a great place to cycle, or at least it was back in the 70s and early 80s. Take a ride out to the Iron Horse sometime.

I screwed up and forgot to set my alarm clock last night. Consequently, I woke up too late and had to drive to work

Hmm. My wife and kids are out in Granite Bay visiting her aunt. I'm considering riding out there to meet them for dinner. On the other hand, it's 101F.

My new Look Classic clipless pedals arrived today. Today was the maiden flight with the new tube. I had to wait for a break in the traffic line to cross the street to get on the right side ( Friday, Cape Cod, 12:30 in the afternoon, mid-August...it all adds up- cars everywhere! ) I worked until 10 tonight, and as I walked out of the store, I heard rolls of thunder. :O I got home before it rained, though. Sunday, I'm seeing Toby Keith, and I'm off Monday. I'm working at 7 AM on Tuesday...
Mostly OK, except for two cars that decided to be kind and wait for me to cross their path. Two-way, single lane road with parking on either side. I was going west, signaled, took my lane to turn left, and stopped for oncoming traffic heading east. Waited for one car to pass, then the car behind him saw me stopped for my left turn and stopped, likely thinking I would complete my turn. I waved him through. The guy behind him did the same thing. I waved him through, too. Cars were behind me as well, a couple of them also indicating a left turn. Maddening. Don't stop for me. This happens about once a week.

I drove in today ( more like crawled...) only because I had travel plans after work. I'll ride in this Tuesday ( I'm off Sunday and Monday).
It was chilly and the ground was wet...but I was appropriately dressed (I guessed right, yay!), so it was a pleasant ride. It was pretty much silent; I only saw two cars. And as an added bonus, I had the Stoplight Mojo. Every red light turned green for me.

The next couple of days should be interesting for me depending on what FAY decides to do.
It was fast, but not fast enough. I wanted to get home. The weather was alright, the sun was in my eyes, there was no wind...it was really unremarkable except for the fact that I was going faster than I wanted. I wanted to see Ms. Fussy Butt and give her a hug.
12bar - good luck with Fay. Hopefully she hasn't heard that Florida is a nice place to visit...

my first commute
Okay so after putting around the neighborhood for a month figuring out my old school bike I finally made the plunge and started commuting to work on my bike today... sort of.
I wasn't sure if i could handle the full distance so I drove about half way to test the waters. But it turned out to be a lot easier than I had anticipated and I think I'll be doing the full 6 miles in no time. It only took me like 15 mins, I was very surprised.
I felt amazing afterward and look forward to getting in shape while saving gas.

I live/have grown up in athens and as long as you wear a helmet and watch out for the bozos in their huge suv's it's still a great place to cycle and it's more popular than ever. Any given night there are bikes Everywhere downtown.

Hello everyone, especially the new commuters! Commuting will get you in shape no time, C-note.
At work there is a spate of people jumping onto other people's computers and sending out hilarious(?) messages to the rest of the department when people leave their desks and their PCs unlocked. I was stung the other day when I went to the bathroom; someone sent out an outlook poll from my email account with the question 'Do you think I look sexy in my bike shorts?'. I'm pleased to say that the vast majority of the responses that came back were 'Yes'. Although proportionally more men voted 'yes' than women, which is a concern...
In other news, I had a scare on the way home tonight, as I almost ran over a cat. It as on a dark stretch of road, and I only saw it literally as I was a foot away - it was black, and facing away from me. By the time it reacted, it was just to the left of my front wheel. Luckily it darted away to the left; if it had have gone right I would have hit it - with unpleasant consequences for both of us, I imagine.

I'm going to miss the road. I got to know it intimately. I was able to almost close my eyes at night and relive the ride mile by mile. There are certain 'kill zones" I won't miss. I used to really look forward to it, though, gonna miss it. Can't wait 'till next spring! Now I'm researching and shopping for a new used bike. The old $20. Schwinn got me hooked but I want modern ... :-)
The ride this morning was nearly effortless. On top of that, the sky was gorgeous! Those were the brightest colors I've seen at dawn in a very long time. I came out at just the right time of day, I guess.
No stoplight mojo today, though. I had to hit the pedestrian button a few times.

Had a fast ride. I took the last 3 days off to recover. I was fully rested and it showed.

Great! Took a new route to add a few miles on, ended up beings exactly 20 miles. My legs still felt like dull achy jelly from Saturday's 75 mile journey extravaganza, but it was all good, got her done in good time.
Very nice....
But, I need to recover more from Saturday.

Nice ride this morning. Bit of a headwind, mid 60sF, and sunny. I caught up to a guy I've seen before. He was doing a pretty constant 15MPH all the way in so I let him pace me. Nice & relaxed.
Two bicycles were u-locked to a sign on the MUP in a section where two bikes shouldn't have been. Middle of woods/swamp area. One had "ape hanger" handlebars with an old-fashioned bell. Strange.

We had a pretty good ride in today. Traffic volume was up slightly, but it's still nothing like mid-September. It's going to be hot and dry on the way home...

Got caught in a downpour going home on Friday.
It worked out well since there were fewer tourists on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Really didn't feel like it today, but towed my kids down to preschool anyway. Not looking forward to the ride home, either.
Today sucked. Coudn't get out of bed, no energy, no motivation. I think I lost my blinkie on my crash yesterday and that took 30 min. for hunting around to no avail. But I risked it anway since 80% of my ride is on the MUP.
Some idiot on a scooter that pulled up to the T intersection with stopping completely. Dude looked behind him, looked down at his feet (wtf?) and then looks in the opposite direction of the perpendicular part of the intersection out to some field and then damn near T-boned me. I had kind of anticipated it and was saying out loud "Take a look.. take a look" when I first saw him pull up not looking and I was first entering the intersection. I then I was standing trying to get up to speed and dude luckily swerved in the opposite direction of me. I yelled a few things about the stop sign and taking a look, etc.
The rest of the commute was uneventful and uninspired. But mentally, it was a bit of a breakthrough because I never wished being anywhere else or got apathetic about the whole uninspired ride. I just kept pedaling.
