Huh...I ran a stop sign just as a cop was turning down the same street this morning. I didn't notice until it was too late. But he didn't say a word. I'm glad, although I suppose I could be irritated that he apparently doesn't think of bikes as the same kind of traffic as cars. ;-) I'm not really worried about it though.

Today it was only 92 and the humidity was fairly low. So why did it feel like 110 all day? If summer doesn't end soon I may actually go crazy. :twitchy:

Nice ride home yesterday, nice ride in to work today. Got stuck at a red light at ~5:50AM, next to a motorcycle. We waited about 60 seconds and when the light didn't change, looked at each other, shrugged and both ran it.

Today was a great day for riding. The humidity was high and the temperature was in the high 70's. I was sweating big time going to and from the gym, work, and commissary. My wife's grocery list almost exceeded my grocery carrying capacity, but I made due with my two Detours toocan bags. I logged more than 1.5 hours in the saddle today.

Nice and quiet. Dark as usual. A wind picked up overnight and I had a very light drizzle at some spots of my commute. Even had time to stop at the doughnut shop and get a croissant.

Good ride except for an idiot on a bike. I passed him coming down Clarendon in Arlington, VA. 615 a.m. and dark. Crappy front light, no rear light. At least he had a helmet on, he almost needed it. I come to a stop at the Ft. Meyer intersection. I always wait at this red light as it is a somewhat complicated crossing. I'm stopped for about 10 seconds and here comes idiot going hell-bent for election not even slowing down. A crossing car slams on its brakes and forces him into oncoming left hand turn traffic. He causes three cars to stop. Then crosses back over the median and causes the original car to stop for him again. He turns left onto Lynn st. against a red and rides down a side walk. By this time I get a green and also turn left down Lynn. I see him leave his bike in a car spot and walk into the Starbucks. It took every ounce of strength not to kick his bike over as I rode past. He personally ensured that 5 more drivers hate bike riders if they didn't already. If I was still 21 I would have kicked his bike over and walked into the Starbucks and punched him in the face. I hope he reads this so he knows what a dick wad he is.

Great ride to work this morning, with low humidity and temps in the mid-60s. The whole week looks good in NC until we get to Friday, when Hurricane/Tropical Storm Hanna is supposed to hit. That will throw a damper into your cycling.

Last week was my lowest cycling week of the year -- only 14 miles when I've been averaging about 150 miles/week since Jan. 1. First I had to take my truck into the shop for its annual service. Then I had to go out of town for 3 days, while TS Fay was dumping 4-10" of rain across the state. After I returned on Friday, went to the coast for the weekend with my wife on a kayaking trip we had planned for a while. Despite that glitch in my schedule, I still managed to top 600 miles for August even though I only rode one day in the last week of the month. Amazing how you can pile up the miles commuting, as I would have easily topped 700 for the month if my schedule wasn't so screwed up the last week.

It was cool again today...Definitely long-sleeve shirt weather.

Nice ride though I only saw two other cyclists this morning.

JoeSoMD 09-03-08 06:26 AM

Any day I can get through two problematic intersections where I have to make left turns is a great day. I survived! Another day defying death or grevious injury. I'll tell ya... I worry about these two turns every morning and they ruin what should be a beautiful ride in a beautiful part of Southern Maryland. I guess it is not the intersections that ruin the ride for me... it is my fear of distracted drivers.

Windy and much cooler than it's been...funny how the subtle changes when the seasons change are so much more apparent when you ride a bike to work, and how much more attention you pay to that kind of stuff. Before I never saw the first signs of fall until maybe the end of September. This is awesome.

Big M 09-03-08 07:18 AM

Made it in 47 minutes today. New personal record. :-)
Beat my previous best of 49 minutes, and my average of 53 minutes.
The whole trip really seemed to go by quick today.

vtjim 09-03-08 07:24 AM

Sunny and comfortable. Low 60sF. Just a slight headwind off Lake Champlain. There was a Squirrel Critical Mass on the MUP. They were running around blocking traffic as they collected nuts, raising their little paws angrily at me and insisting, "We are traffic!" Or something. :p

girljen 09-03-08 07:28 AM

It was cold, I was late, so I dropped the hammer and then I was warm. Not the most pleasant commute, but I made it to work in time to make coffee.

dcrowell 09-03-08 07:55 AM

I had a wonderful commute. Cool, but not cold. Dark at the beginning, cloudy, so no sun in the eyes as it got lighter.

No wind to speak of, the hills seemed to flatten out for me, and traffic was light. I hit very few red lights.

All was great, until I got to work, and had to get working. <sigh> At least I'll get to ride home.

dalmore 09-03-08 08:02 AM

I only stopped at one light - incredible luck. I probably could have made that one too but I didn't feel like bombing up the hill. It's my first light and if I had know, I'd have bombed!!

Hit a rabbit on the Greenway :-(

Learned another crazy driver move today. Pull across a double yellow line to pass on the left with an open lane on the right. I'll glance over the left shoulder before turning left in the future.

rlrct 09-03-08 08:20 AM

Glorious ride today. 63F, dry, clear - shorts and a short-sleeve jersey were just perfect.

pinkrobe 09-03-08 08:21 AM

Dodged a squirrel this morning - I don't think it would fare well against a larger vehicle. The commute was chilly, although not anywhere near as cold as yesterday. Things look to be picking up for the week, but I can tell this is the beginning of the end. The Fall is coming.

Pig_Chaser 09-03-08 08:37 AM

I could not drad my worthless butt outta bed this morning. Well, not on time anyway so i left late. I was riding during the school rush-hour. Almost got right hooked by a school bus, one of those half length yellow bird deals. My spidy senses were tingling the moment it passed me so when it initiated the right turn i was already death gripping the brakes, i dunno if it even qualifies as a close call.

JR97 09-03-08 08:55 AM

Cold. I wore a fleece hoody. It was also dark. So I've got every light in my arsenal hooked up. Makes my bike look very ghetto. Still saving for the Blackburn System. I might need to find something cheaper sooner though.

I also had my first roadside flat repair. Must have been a nail or screw because it put a nice dinger in my tire liner. Didn't puncture the liner, but probably had enough impact to get to the tire.

jpdesjar 09-03-08 08:58 AM

quite pleasant and sunny...wore a wind breaker since it was a bit chilly
i felt fast today as i did when i ran last night, i guess i am just getting speedier

FredOak 09-03-08 10:10 AM

I drove yesterday and had a brick thrown from a hill through my windshield at 60 MPH, so I was glad to take the bike today...and was almost creamed by a freaking SUV making a left when I had the right of way...but the rest of the ride was fine and it felt good after last nights shock.

Big M 09-03-08 10:14 AM

FredOak, dude, that is horrible! Please tell me whoever threw the brick is in custody?

I've heard way too many stories of stuff thrown through windshields, be it from an overpass bridge, other cars, whatever. Anyone who does that should be tried for attempted manslaughter.

AdamD 09-03-08 10:15 AM

Any day I get to ride is a good day. Even if the ride is less than pleasant the endorphin high I get, the mood it puts me in at work, and of course the exercise more than makes up for a bad ride. Having said that...

Riding the LA River north out of Long Beach there was a bit of high fog, but that either burned off or I rode out of it within 10 minutes. There was an abnormally large number of gnat clouds to ride through this morning, I think I ingested 1/2 lb. of the little buggers rather than my normal 1/4 lb. :) I'm getting a new bike that should be here and built up in just over a week... I can't wait.

caloso 09-03-08 10:30 AM

This morning I rolled up to an intersection and smelled pork. I thought "That's weird. That truck smells like pork."

Then the light changed, the truck pulled away, and I saw the trailer which was a huge smoker with the sign "Leon's Ribs" on the back. I thought about drafting it, then thought better not lest it hit a bump and launch a hot side of ribs at me.

J B Bell 09-03-08 11:07 AM

My commute is too short now I'm staying at a friend's place practically next to the e/w artery I take to work. I'll have to make sure to calibrate for that when I'm looking at a new place. :)

Jerk in a sports car went within inches of me, illegally passing cars on the right. Total gain for risking my life: 2 cars. Idiot.
