24F this morning. Brr...
Only 9 degrees above our usual winter low temps. I am making my usual yearly attempt at keeping my feet warm. It is almost time to order a couple items that I hope may help.

Now that I am in the new building I am unsure if I like locking up in the garage or not. It is strange not having my bike near me. bleh...

So warm today!!!! We had to ride the detour like yesterday, but it was fine. I screwed myself over a mere two blocks from work. I took the far right lane because it was empty, thinking I could swing back over to the mid-left lane, but I boxed myself in with right-turning traffic. I had to go an extra 6 blocks to loop back, sitting through 5 lights. Oh well, more time on the bike is always good. :)

habernac 10-23-08 09:01 AM

yeah, gotta love the temperature swing! -2C yesterday, +14C when I left this morning. Woot!!

Caleab 10-23-08 09:36 AM

Nice ride in this morning.
43F or so. I didn't dress quite right. I need to find some riding shorts. Today I wore a bib with a pair of compression tights over them, mountain bike jersey (long sleeve) and my PI vest, full finger gloves and a Headsweats skullcap under my helmet.
My arms and legs were just too chilly. Too much for my liking anyway. I'd rather sweat my arse off.
legs are also weak this morning. Lots of burn. Probably a good thing I'll be driving tomorrow. Need a little rest before saturday's ride.

This morning though, the stink of stale beer all over the street about knocked me off my bike! ha

GO PHILLIES!!! WOO-HOOOOOOO!!!! (ahem... sorry. Had to get that outta my system). Anyhoo, commute this morning in 34-degrees, very light winds compared to yesterday, when I was confronted with a 27 mph headwind gust at the Kelly Drive MUP. These winds off the Schuylkill river are killing me. When it's calm, I cruise along at 20 mph. When it's windy like this, I'm down to 14 mph (if I'm lucky).

I've never used, so please forgive my ignorant question. Here goes: how impaired would she be, driving her car during/after smoking? Not so sure I like the idea of being on the roads on my bike when drivers are, um, indulging. :twitchy:

Was running late this morning and rushed the commute as a result. Much less traffic on the road at 8:30 than at 7:30, which was a pleasant change. No temperature difference though.

I look over and it's this fat 20-30 something guy mumbling to himself. I shine my helmet light right in his face and the freakin' coward won't even turn to look at me.

They are all so brave when their 4 tons are moving, but when they are stopped they're wimps!

Rest of the ride was fine, I was just so PO'd!

You're not so tough without your car, are ya?

fog->mist->rain->downpour but my socks didn't soak through so they should be dry by quittin' time.

caloso 10-23-08 03:01 PM

Slept in, hung out with my daughter and read Yertle the Turtle. Then made pancakes and took a leisurely ride to work on the FG. A very pleasant morning.

sounds delightful!

Got to work late today and stayed late. Not much traffic on my MUP. Just cold enough to keep most people away. It was a nice refreshing ride home.

martybucs 10-23-08 06:39 PM

Holy moley it was cold! Glad it's only 5 miles!

On the way home, I got a slow leak in my rear tire, from a tube patch, I suppose. I stopped twice to pump it up and got home just as it was getting squishy.

On the porch was a package containing my Nu-Teck airless tires. I put them right on. I read all the bad comments lately and I was worried that I'd be disappointed. I took a short ride just before dinner to try them out. I think they're going to be good. Seem solid, but not harsh riding. They're not heavy or really any of the bad things I had heard.

We'll see how they hold up on the commute. I know you purists are going "Bah, you'll ruin your bike!". Well, I hope not, I just don't like fixing flats on a busy road with cars whizzing by at 70mph, (the speed limit is 55).

dcrowell 10-23-08 06:45 PM

Traffic was actually sane on my trip home today, and the wind was at my back. I should have bought a lottery ticket.

I had one car pull along side, and slow down. I figured it was going to be trouble. The young guy in the passenger seat complimented me on my lights. Cool!

I stopped at Target on the way home, and bought a windbreaker and thermals. That along with the tights and rain jacket I have should help. Tomorrow is supposed to be cold and rainy.

31 f. this morning when I left, 40 by the time I got there. The leaves are just about done, but birch trees will be hanging on to their yellow leaves fro a few more weeks. Late Maples will be in and out of bright red for a few weeks as well. This may be my last fall in New England, so soaking it up while I can. I fear only about another month of commuting weather.

tomg 10-23-08 07:27 PM

very good rides both ways, 40 deg am - 60 deg pm, dry/lite wind!

Saved in AM by air-zound horn!!

at interchange with limitted access (4 lane) road, a van driver was approaching from "jug-handle" (nj for off-ramp) onto secondary road. i ride to work on this road. i watched him proceed, there was no eye contact, and it seemed he was proceeding into my established area.
i horned 2x and he cought eye contact, waited as i had right of way (VB).
he road next to me further up road, rolled window down, and stated he was sorry, did not see me due to the rising sun (i got a later start), and he also stated that the horn got his attention. i waved a "thanks for sharing" and we proceeded on our way.

wore shorts with goretex jacket on return, re-loaded air-zound to 80 psi and hope i don't need to use it again (but it's ready)!

i am thinking of getting the same or simular airless tires/tubes. these would be for commuter, to build endurance, and enjoy coventional tires on club rides or tours when i have more time.
i look forward to hearing how these tires work for you, pm if you prefer .

Another beautiful ride home from work through Riverside state park. The pics are in the Nine Mile area of the Centennial Trail and the Spokane river just before the Nine Mile dam.

Wow. What a pretty lake. And what a nice path to ride. Lovely.

Didn't do much riding today. Rode to class and back, and then it started raining, so I used the car for the next two trips. Will drive tomorrow as well due to the rain.

endless 10-23-08 09:34 PM

breezy and overcast on the way in to work, besides fighting the wind the whole time it was a good ride. the way home the wind was somewhat at my back and a solid drizzle the whole way home. gotta figure out some rain gear pretty soon i guess. oh and as i was passing some pedestrians i was downshifting and slowed down a bit to not rip they're clothes off as I flew by them and in between gears i felt a clunk and my pedals were spinning free, i was hoping i didn't bust my chain (it was too dark to tell for sure) so I had to coast into a gas station to inspect. turned out my chain just popped off my sprocket *whew* i was glad to see that and then laughed as i remembered the couple gasp because i has passed them.

Commuting is fun.

Great pics!!

My commute was great up until near the end where my front tire went flat!

clydesdale 10-23-08 11:22 PM

Had a good commute today. First below 30 degree ride this year. New Target soft shell jacket works awesome. Anyone have suggestion on a face mask that keeps you warm, does not suffocate, and does not fog up your glasses let me know.

funrover 10-23-08 11:27 PM

I have used the Pearl Izumi (sorry for spelling) for that last few years and it works great for me. It is the full face cover and I just make sure I tuck it into my jacket. when I exhale the warmth blows into my jacket... really nice! I will try to find what I have!

Edit: http://www.coloradocyclist.com/product/item/PEAXWXYQ

I also wear this under my snowboard helmet when I go, I recommend it!

A little wet, but not soaked.

Nice ride in this morning: ~39F, call it 4C, clear and calm. A few minutes later than usual but traffic still light.

Took off a little early yesterday to run an errand which tacked an extra 6 or 7 miles onto my normal commute and I actually felt a bit stronger for it this morning. The errand amused one of my co-workers. He's a guy about my age (53) who's a confirmed and committed petroleum-burner (both on land and on the water) who I frequently refer to around the office as, "Oil-spill Bill." He was pretty tickled to learn that I was riding my bike to the Motor Vehicle Administration to get my Driver's Licence renewed.

The real punch line, though, was when I told him I was going to loudly complain about the fact that the MVA doesn't have a bike rack. :D

YoKev 10-24-08 05:35 AM

Nice ride in this morning...I left about 10 minutes earlier than normal and took a easy cruise in.

23F and very foggy for the first half. Then, the sky slowly turned red as the sun rose, and it made all of the fall colors really pop...all while looking over fields covered in frost. I don't think a camera could have caught all that was going on.
