Rain last night left puddles, and did nothing to reduce the humidity. Although we were predicted to have rain all day, it was clear when I left work, so I celebrated by taking the 27 mile leg home. Nice ride, although no record setter.

Weirdly humid for Sacramento. Normally we're under 20% in the summer but today felt midwestern. Actually had some sprinkles.
Rode past the media circus that's set up its tent next to the Secretary of State's office. They were doing standups for the stories on the recall of Gov. Davis. What a zoo. |
I suddenly realized, at 5:40, that I needed to pick up my car by 6:00. I suspected it'd take 20 mins to get to the service shop if I hustled but I wasn't sure. Then again, I didn't count on the wind either. By the time I got there (at exactly 6:00!!) I was very, very tired. But it felt great.
So I strapped the bike on the car and went to pick up my daughter. Along the way I encountered my commuting buddy from this a.m. (See earlier post.) He recognized me and we had a chance to chat a bit. It was quite a coincidence seeing him several miles away from our morning route. |
A very nice ride in this morning. I took it fairly easy for the first little bit, but by the end I felt like going a bit faster. All in all, a nice ride, and the weather is not too bad (although it still hasn't rained, and they had it forecasted for yesterday, last night and today...)
|
Got a little wet yesterday going home, there was a small rain shower that lasted about 10 minutes. Besides that it was a good ride.
The ride in this morning was decent. Cool temps and hardly any traffic. |
Yesterday was warm and a bit windy...took the short route in, because of a time crunch. The way home it was cooler and less buggy than usual...saw a deer and two cats. :)

This entire week I've had wonderful weather in the morning, temps in the low 60s. Mid 70s for the ride home, warm enough to work up a decent sweat. Almost no traffic in the morning at 6 to 6:30am through the west side of Chicago. Coming home at around 4pm is another story. Had a van cross two lanes of traffic to make a right turn in front of me last night - he had to know I was there because he had passed me a few blocks sooner. But in Chicago I've had people who I've made eye contact with pull out in front of me, as to say "I"m in a car and bigger than you, so you have to hit your brakes and stop for me".

This was the first morning this week without wind. It was 66 F/18.9 C but high humidity. My average speed was almost 2mph higher due to the lack of head wind. A mighty fine day to ride.
|
Yesterday I used my road bike (Trek 520) to commute. It was a little faster (I don't worry about speed) but I prefer my MTB for the few rough sections through industrial areas. Did hit 32mph on a short downhill.
The greatest thing has been the short-lived break in the weather. Morning lows in the 60s and afternoon highs in the 80s. Alas, it will soon come to an end. |
This past week has been much better than the previous 2 or 3...the temps are finally back down to around 100. There has also been a bit of rain:) My bike actually got (a little) dirty!
I hope the temps don't get back around 110 too soon. It's very hard for me to stay motivated when it's that hot out! |
The weather was great for riding this morning and the traffic wasn't too heavy so that always makes for a good commute. As a bonus I saw a fellow commuter for the first time today. He is not a regular commuter but he was riding in because his truck was in the shop. It was nice to have someone to ride with for 5 of the 15 miles. Made the ride seem to go faster.

Hi Folks
Good commute today, 18.3 mph average, which is not bad for me. Not too warm or cool, just perfect weather with slightly "moody" grey skies. They threaten rain for tomorrow... Cheers, Ed |
It was aweful! They had just scraped the streets to repave them. I was doing like 5 mph and bouncing like hell!
|
As planned I took yesterday off from commuting, and I needed it. So the ride in today was the best of the week. A bit cooler as there has been some morning clouds the last few days, and little wind. Looks like some traill closures are coming as they are working on some of the bridges it goes under. Not a problem thoough as there are several alternate routes.

Well where did that come from? "Coldest" Gold Coast night of 2003 last night, it was 5.5 deg C when I set out for my pre-dawn ride at 4.30am, had warmed up to around 8 for the ride to work and was probably about 12 by the time I got there. That made for an interesting change. I felt a little sore riding into work this morning, which surprises me. I hope it was just the "cold".

I finally was able to commute for the first time this week. I thought it was great! The weather finally cooled off a bit. For the first time in a while it seemed like I had only a small headwind in the afternoon and when I finally headed south it actually felt like a tailwind. I was a happy camper!
Andy D., no doubt, will think that the weather sucked! |
It was pouring with rain this morning, but on the bright side there was a slight tailwind to help the ride.
.... Headwinds tonight! Have a good weekend folks, Ed |
It was one of those mornings that made me just slow down and enjoy the ride - sunny, not too warm, and little traffic... Fantastic!
|
First morning this week without fog. It was 66 F/18.9 C, no wind and clear. There were lots of other bikes out, but none seemed to be commuters. It is a shame that there are not more of us here in Biddeford, Maine.
|
I only made it 6 miles - 1/4 of the way, and then my derailleur cable snapped. :crash: I was having such a great ride; I just knew I was going to set a new PR today.
A fellow commuter that I'd recently passed stopped and asked if I needed help. I said no and called home to get a ride... Now I've got to figure out how to put a new cable on these fancy integrated shifters. Maybe I'll just have the LBS do it, but they're so busy this time of year that they probably will want to hold my bike for 2 days. Can't have that!!! Tim |

If it ever happens again you should be able to use the adjusting screws to get the chain into the middle of the cassette so you can keep going. My commute was in pouring rain this morning but as there was no wind it was really good! I love the sound of tyres sizzling in the rain. |

Great ride in today. Started out pretty slow but felt fresh after a longer than normal warm-up. (I usually instantly warm up.) The hill today was easier than normal b/c I've been hill training on weekends.
But it was COLD, dang it ... COLD. There was a nice tailwind, though. I think San Jose has settled back into a cooler pattern. I need HEAT ... HEAT HEAT HEAT. That's right, SteveE ... HEAT HEAT HEAT !!!! |
I was probably the only commuter in San Jose wearing a sleeveless jersey the past two mornings. INVIGORATING, I say!
