We are supposed to be having a heatwave in UK (at least down south- rail lines buckling etc) but this morning it was cool, wind free. Nice ride in.
And every morning I see another cruise ship bringing the tourists (mostly American I suspect) to the Military Tatoo and Edinburgh Fringe and Festival. Certainly look nice on the water. Looks like it's going to be a hot day and a hot ride home. |
Hi folks,
Chewa - I can assure you that it is already boiling down here in Oxfordshire. The thermometer in my office reads 27.0 °C and its only 9:30! I should take the day off for some leisurely riding between pubs..... Cheers, Ed |
Originally posted by Rowan And neither have your friends on BF ;) Absolutely beautiful ride home from work (via the LBS), I just love a sea-breeze, and this one was particularly nice. Ocean spray in the air, a temperature of 22 deg C at around 5.30pm - what more can a spanky ask for? I just love the South Pacific! Ed - don't get too upset, 27 C isn't that hot. I'm genuinely surprised we haven't hit that during our winter (we have the last couple of "winters"). |
Had a pretty nice ride in this morning, after the long weekend here in Canada. I had a long day yesterday, but still managed to be up and about this morning at my usual time, and felt pretty good on my ride in. What a nice morning so far!

Another scorcher today.
Don't worry Chris - whilst we're busy complaining about the heat, we are all loving it! Weather complaints are just the british national pastime. Had a great ride in today. Ed |
I think I timed my comment about the temperatures quite well, given today's conditions. I didn't end up leaving work until after sunset, and it was still 24 C then. And to think, winter isn't "officially" supposed to end for another three weeks yet!

I finally stopped making excuses and am commuting again the real way. It is only 7km and has horrible traffic but it is horrible in the car too. This particular forum helped by making me feel bad that others are commuting by bike and i wasn't. I do it solely for transportation, not exercise, no smelling roses.

Had a wonderful ride in this morning on the somewhat soggy roads. I got completely soaked last night in a pretty heavy rain, and the humidity still hasn't broken here. I'll probably get wet again tonight, but I actually enjoy the rain when it's this hot out!
Cheers! |
Really hot today but with a cool easterly, so warm but a tailwind on the way home.
That and all the "Daughters of Satan" in their summer clothes should make my ride home enjoyable. |
Nice ride Tuesday, goin' in was average. Comin' home was headwinds all the way. Gear down and enjoy the breeze I told myself. I'm glad I listened. :D

Two days in a row now. I felt a bit slower today than I did yesterday, but still held on. I am going to attempt to finish off the rest of the week riding and hopefully it will put me on pace to ride all next week.
It definately feels good to be turning the cranks again. Especially since I can now finally enjoy the nice weather. |
Really noticed the change in the light this morning. I left a little early today, or more accurately, the time I always plan to leave but don't ever make because I don't have my act together.
It was a bit breezy on the American River this morning. Lots of people who looked like they were training, lots of people who looked like they were commuting, and a few like me who looked like they were doing both at the same time. |
Two crummy weeks of no commuting...My mother needed help moving and hauling loads of rubble, and the realtor suddenly had a whole lineup of people to show the house to (floor-scrubbin' time) and my frikkin' shifter busted, and several bits of my 1985 car fell apart and had to be run in to the mechanic, for a total repair cost of nearly the price of my bike.
Today I finally got to ride again! The new shifters are great. they are also Gripshifts, but with shorter handles so that they aren;t so easy to shift automatically. One oddity--on my previous pair, the gear numbers were printed on the static part of the shifter, and in these ones they;re printed on the moving part...took me a while to figure out why the numbers seemed to be in reverse order, but my hands kept shifting right anyway, When I wasn't looking at the shifters, anyway. Anyhow, it was a great ride...raced a thunderstorm in (it passed on my left.) At one point, I heard someone screaming repeatedly, and a dog barking like crazy...I turned around and went back up the hill to see if something was wrong, but it was just a couple of farmers and their dogs herding the cows up to the barn for milking. I'm sore and stiff from the two weeks of couch-potating...gotta ride more! |
I may have re-injured my shoulder tonight by taking some severe and desperate evasive action avoiding a redneck-propelled van that was careering out of control down the wrong side of the road. It feels OK now, but it was sore for a while there. :( I suppose I can at least blame someone else this time around.
|
Ouch... you're having a spell of back luck ChrisL. Hope you didn't re-injure yourself too badly.
My commute this morning was great, but the humidity (100%!) is killing me! Traffic was heavier this morning than usual for some reason. I had a nice fast ride yesterday, and hopefully will have one on the way home today too! |
First commute after 2 days of the bike being in the shop. Nice to have it all tuned up, shifting smoothly again, brakes gripping at the same amount of pressure, drivetrain all nice and lubricated. Good weather as well, still cooler (summer may be over here, but fall is always the best anyway) little wind. Lots of people out riding, none looking like commuters. Don't these people have jobs?
|
No commute today. My wife had a medical appointment this morning and it was important for us both to be there. As we were getting ready, she said "If you want, you could ride your bike to the doctor's office and I'll just meet you there." It was too late for me to go slowly enough not to be sweaty, so I said I'd just drive her there.
But gosh, I love that woman. |
Today was great. :D
I was sore, as I predicted, but rode anyway, taking the short route. On the way in, I had a nice tailwind. It had died somewhat by the time I went home, but not entirely. Anyway, there's a dance hall just down the hill from my house, where people have wedding receptions and stuff. I heard loud music as I approached it tonight, but noticed an absence of the usual cars-parked-all-over. I slowed down and peeked in the window, and saw that a rock band was rehearsing. I got my own private concert! :) |

Had an ok ride in this morning. I didn't feel so well when I woke up, so decided to take it a bit slower than usual on the way in to work. It's really humid here still, and I would love to see a break in this weather! Hopefully by the weekend it'll be a little nicer.
In other news, I've decided to buy a road bike... check out this thread for details. |
I usually commute on my MTB, but today I decided to get up early and take a longer route on my road bike (Trek 520).
I foolishly assumed that the traffic would be light at 6:15. My normal commuting route has little traffic at 7:15. Instead I had a good speed workout. I normally putter along at 12-15mph, but I found myself going 18-20mph as waves of cars zipped by at 40mph, some passing within a couple feet. Damned road has no shoulders. Well, I won't do that again :p |
I came in at 6:30 instead of the usual 8 this morning. I found the opposite -- traffic was very light and waits at stopsigns/lights were minimal. Quite nice, actually. Oh, yes -- much cooler temperatures.

After a couple of weeks of being "busy", I finally got 3 out of 4 days in this week commuting. Good week with no flats!!! (I still need to make it home:))
On another note, I accepted a new position that will cut my one-way commute from 18 miles to 12. I think I will enjoy a 24 mile round trip better than 35! |
Nice ride in today, light cloud cover which brought a little higher humidity, and still comfortably cool. Much lighter traffic on the trail. They have been working on the bridge I normally take when I exit the rail trail so I been taking the next bridge down. A little bonus extra mile each day :)
I'm glad it's friday, I just never had any energy this week. |
