Man, I got honked at on the way home before I even left the parking lot. Sorry for wanting to survive my first left turn of the afternoon. Weather was nice, though. A little cold in the morning, but great sunshine and a tailwind on the way home.
|
Was almost hit today. I was going through an intersection where I had a green light and the person turning in to my lane with a red light almost hit me. She didn't even stop at the red light she just coasted through and I had to swerve a couple times. I think she might have been talking on a phone. Very scary incident. The road I ride on is very dangerous. I'm having second thoughts...:(

nice tailwind on the way to work. nice headwind on the way home. it was wet... and still a bit on the chilly side.
loved it.:) |
I love you guys who go year round. I rode in today. Had to stop twice to adjust front brakes. New drops on the hybrid are awesome but I'll need to adjust my saddle up in front a degree maybe. I'm always over dressed but I wear good stuff and somewhat layered. Thin wool hat under helmet, poly-top under a fleece, covered by day-glo lime-green jacket, downstairs had my new bike shorts! :-) tights and wind-water pants, 2 layers of socks and big mountain shoes. Showered and changed all at the office. Only one cager jerked his wheel toward the curb after he passed me - he was looking right at me in his mirror - nothing accidental about it.

Rode my fixie to work for the first time this year. Nearly got wiped out by a blue Ford Ranger backing out onto Rte 33 as I was riding past. Didn't get the lic.#. But that truck is parked at that house every night so I could haunt the driver, if I felt it necessary.
Other than that, the ride was uneventful. Even warm. I think I'm gonna like my fixie now that I've wrapped my head around the idea of how to ride it. |
29*F this morning, didn't quite expect that, suppose to be 50+ for ride home.
I wish the temps would level off a bit so I wasn't packing 2 gloves, 2 hats, etc. for the below freezing mornings and warm afternoons. |
SQUISH! Glad you weren't! Hey I'm a fan of visibility and even though it might be overkill for most of my commute each Item I use serves to help in any number of unique circumstances. I use a bright strobe up front even in daylight this helps cagers see me even through trees and bushes that might otherwise obstruct their view of me. I now sport a day-log lime-green jacket which really stands out even for color-blind people, and lastly is my bike flag - yes I have one. It helps me stay alive crossing Route 9 in Natick, MA and generally riding in traffic or waiting at a light. Since you know that driveway you know it's a kill zone. Think I'll start a thread just about everyone's kill zone(s). I certainly have mine.

I had a pretty good ride in this morning. There are loads more people commuting over the Queensboro bridge. I passed a few people going up the first half. It reminded me of when I started commuting and I'd see people just fly right by me. I like playing the catch up game, it makes me push harder and ride faster. Once I was in the city, it was pretty cool there were about 3-4 riders all weaving in and out of traffic.
I need to chat more people up. I see them all the time now. |

Cool morning with temps in the upper 30s. Took it easy but made good time from a nice tailwind. Looking forward to the mid 50s on the way home tonight.

Passed a few other commuters on the way home. It is nice to see others out there! I was about 15 feet behind another bike and he stopped at a green light to let a car pass him and turn right at the light. I was not expecting it and almost hit the bike AND the car.
I almost stopped to explain that he had the right of way, but I just wanted to get home. |
Spring is definitely in the air in NC. Lots of redbud and cherry trees flowering, but unfortunately the pollen is also kicking up. I had a coughing fit last night, probably due to pollen, that made it hard to sleep. So I went into work late today and had my first morning commute in daylight since the time changed in early March. It was really nice riding in sunlight for a change.

I was running SO late yesterday. I was halfway down my street before I realized I had no helmet. It was nice riding without it, but it was back on today. I got to the platform and was folding my bike just as the train arrived. Phew!
I do feel relatively fast on my folder. I once caught up with a serious road rager I met in New Haven... in the next town! After having to dismount to get off the curb! (He had literally run me up and into the sidewalk) I was bad-- I rode into the parking lot where he was pulling in, circled in front of him and left. I was hoping he'd be fretting about getting his car keyed while he was in the post office. Still, it's pretty stupid to get drawn in by those people. I try to ignore it now. But I'd rather use the speed for good purposes such as making the train. On the way home, I spoke to a guy at the NH train station who was planning some kind of rally to bug MTA to allow non-folders on the trains during peak hours. He had a nice cannondale. I stopped and talked with him for a while, about the MTA's plans for bike racks on the trains and such. Today: blue, breezy, and beautiful. EDIT: MARCH STATS Calories Burned: 11,125 Distance: 223.77 Weight Change: -7 Lbs. Number of R/t Bike Commutes: 14.5 (flatted and walked home after 3 miles one day) Number of Car Commutes: 6 Ratio of Bike to Car Commutes since I "gave up the car" for Lent: 2.09:1 |
There is rain in the forecast today, but I rode in anyway. The rain is supposed to be light and its not that cold out (40's) so it should be ok. Since this is the end of the first quarter I thought that I would tally up my rides and I was surprised to see that out of 62 commutes 30 of them were by bike. Not a bad percentage considering the wind, snow and cold in Southeastern Wisconsin.

I did my first ever commute to work today. It was around 40f and windy. It started to rain half-way through. Besides the facts that I can't feel my legs anymore, It went ok. I had 10lbs of extra weight on my backpack and it definately felt it during some of the uphill section.

CONGRATS and WELCOME! Practice makes perfect. try to get some stuff at work so you don't have to carry so much and try to get whatever you carry off your back. make sure you eat well before the ride home - not a lot - just smart. Just had lunch so later there will be a granola snack, then at 3 a banana, 3:30 coffee, then at 3:45 15 minutes before I leave, some canned fruit and B6 & B12.
|
Thanks for the advice rumrunn. I had some good multi-grain cheerios /skin milk as breakfast. I will carry some nutribar with me as snack.

43F and RAINING. It was just heavy mist riding w/ 7 yr old to his school. Standing outside after dropping him, the skies opened. My wife hadn't left the house yet w/ our 4 yr old in the trailer. It turned out she was busy putting the bike and trailer back in the house and getting all the gear into the car. It's actually sunny out right now. At least, there's glare off the puddles.

GRRRRR....
We had severe thunderstorms last night. When I woke up, it seemed like that had passed, but when I checked the radar this morning, there was another band of showers (not as intense) just about to hit. So I drove. The rain never fell. I should have ridden. |
Beautiful day. 45F, blue skies, just the barest hint of a breeze.

There should be a thread on how to read the weather maps. Which radar did you use? NWS?

My first commute in 6 months. First my job moved from 6 miles away to 23 miles away about the time daylight began to shrink and I was afraid to go through the state park and rural area in the dark. (I might have had a Matt Lauer problem:lol:) But this morning I pulled it off. First commute here, first time on the heavier bicycle in a while and it was so slow. I've got to find a way to speed up that Navigator cause that road is way too rough for the road bike.:(

Morning commute at 36. I still don't have the clothes thing figured out. Today I tried a long sleeve workout shirt, layered with short sleeve jersey, with a light jacket on top. Was way to hot. Need to find a good jacket that i can wear over my jersey, that has good temp control, that I can easily transport home.
