A mostly lazy commute for me this morning, but I had a nice opportunity to draft a landscaping truck on Vernon Ave. My top speed was 34.4 mph on essentially flat ground, spinning around 135 rpm still on the small chainring. Umm... thrilling.

My commute was a disaster. I have a haunted rear tire that eats holes in my tube. There are three patches in a tube that was brand new on Monday evening. This morning I though I had it licked, until I was one third over a bridge without a sidewalk. Perfect.

Now there are three patches, and one leak in the tube.

Really good.
Yesterday I saw a HUGE doe, if it were earlier in the year I'd say she's pregnant, but not at this time of the year. She was only 40 yards from the road. Beautiful!!

16 degrees C this morning, and a big southerly. That will be a decent headwind this evening should it stay there (which is less than likely). A rarity on the Gold Coast this morning, no idiots!

Rowan 09-02-04 09:16 PM

Oh Chris, Chris, Chris, you've left yourself wide open on this one...

Except the one on the bike :D

About 9 deg when I came in, with a headwind about 10mph. I had a puncture coming off the bridge, but relaxed and changed out the tube -- the cause was a tiny piece of Michelin wire.

Last night was great, though. First stage was to a meeting, but when that finished, I had a very fast and enjoyable ride home.

I'm more concerned that I might have jinxed myself. Surfers Paradise + Friday night =

I might take Bundall Road this evening.

"hold it at 24mph" -- ooh, i feel a case of anaerobia slowly coming on :p
Drafting a bus? Propane, not diesel I hope! Haven't done that, seems to me that would be an exercise in frustration as soon as it pulls over to the next bus stop?

I understand L, N, P and Q to be converted from 3-lane 1-way to 2-lane 2-way with bike lanes between 15th and 29th in the next few months. For most bike commuters prolly a good thing. For the more adventurous among us who like taking one of those 3 lanes, not so good.

It was chilly at 6AM so I wore a long sleeved jersey and had another solitary commute in to work. The weather is still good but I haven't seen any regular commuters in the morning all week long. I do see quite a few cyclists at lunchtime & in the afternoon so maybe everyone is just sleeping in?? This week, I was able to spend time on the frame of the bike I'm rebuilding, almost finished the repaint, just needs the clear coat now.

Ride home last night was night, a little warm but tolerable.

Rain on the ride in this morning. Lightning and thunder too! The rain was just ending when I got started, 3-4 miles of steady rain then just wet roads.

Ride home last night was nice: low 80s, light tailwind, sunny. But then there was the well-intentioned (?) driver who was compelled to inform me, as he rolled by in the right-turn lane, that I'm supposed to be on the sidewalk. I told him he was mistaken, and that he should go read the law. He responded inaudibly, so I repeated my suggestion, and he repeated his remark, whatever it was. He was certain that he was correct.

So sad that so many people readily accept the privilege of driving while entirely dismissing the responsibility that comes with it: knowing the law.

What can one do but ride on and look forward to the next opportunity to educate another motorist? The opportunity previous to THIS one was with a cop who insisted that bikes cannot use left-turn lanes. "The law requires you to stay to the right edge of the road" said he. !

Another great morning… unofficially (thermometer at the house) it was 67 degrees and very light winds. This weather makes me extra glad it is a three day weekend. Everyone have a great and safe Labor Day. :)

caloso 09-03-04 10:39 AM

A pleasant breeze (22mph with 30mph gusts) from the north this morning. Had another well-intentioned but clueless motorist trying to cede me her right of way at an intersection. I've gotten pretty good at trackstanding but it requires two hands so I can't wave and I have to jerk my head while I'm yelling "Go already!"

Zin 09-03-04 10:49 AM

It was 36F/2.2C when I left the house this morning. It felt a few degrees cooler when I hit the river bottoms. The sun is low in the sky now when I leave home. I'm glad to say that "The School Bus Tango" has not been much of a hassle yet this year. Last school year, I had one that would come up behind me and ride my wheel for a mile or so. Really bugged me.

Have a great weekend! :)

EDIT:Hey WonkerJaw, send some of that BBQ up this way! Montanan's don't know how to make good BBQ! :p

froody 09-03-04 12:44 PM

Had an enjoyable ride back last night. I didn't feel like pushing myself to go fast, so I took the long route home (only a few more miles, but lots more hills). Of course I ended up pushing a little anyway, but man is that looong down-hill stretch sweet.
Had a nice ride in this morning. The guy who never waves back actually turned his head towards me today, so I know he sees me.

Looking forward to the ride home tonight. Going to do a road ride tomorrow morning if I can haul my a** outta bed and then on Sunday I,m hooking up with some old pals to do some MTB'ing for a few hours. Monday is a holiday. I love long weekends now that I get them off. :)

Socksshep 09-03-04 02:48 PM

I had a great ride in this morning. and am looking forward to my ride home. It was unfortunate, because the traffic held me back from riding as far as I wanted to. I am continuing to work to the point of doing the whole commute sometime soon.

Rogerinchrist 09-03-04 05:48 PM

Cool this morning, wore long sleeved t-shirt. Stayed an extra half hour at work and maaaan was there alot more traffic. The school kids I get, but I think the rest were from the Labor Day week-end starting, which I have to work on (but get to ride too).

caloso 09-03-04 05:57 PM

I rode the A bike to work today, even wore the non-walkable sidi shoes, because I was going to get the chance to take a long ride out of town after work. We were going to have dinner at friends but they cancelled. D'oh! Seems that they just had a bunch of compost and manure spread for their new landscaping and the windstorm we had last night blew most of it into the pool! Ha.

So, I'll just poke along home, hoping not to get run over. Have a safe holiday (in the States) weekend!

ollo_ollo 09-03-04 10:57 PM

Took the day off so no cummute. As a substitute, I rode into town & got a haircut. Surprised at how little traffic there is around here in the middle of the day. Grandkids are coming tomorrow so we should have a busy holiday.

Rowan 09-05-04 06:50 PM

Coolish at 7 deg C, but clear blue skies again, plenty of warmth in the sunshine and only a 3 to 4 knot headwind on the way out. Weather is starting to warm up again, with an expected maximum of 18 deg C in the next couple of days.

Commutes at the weekend (delivering bike riding courses) also were pretty good. Even had shorts on yesterday, although the knees were starting to protest just a little on the way home.

Chris L 09-05-04 09:02 PM

Meanwhile up here it was already 18 degrees C by 7.30 am this morning. No wind to speak of, and the bike managed without any problems after yesterday's mis-haps at Springbrook. Actually felt surprisingly good.

Chris L 09-06-04 04:27 AM

Surprisingly busy for a Monday this evening, but I blasted through the Gridlock nonetheless. Contrary to slowing down when I lane split, I seem to be speeding up for it these days. http://www.okaygood.com/icons/hammertime.gif

Obligatory weather report: 22 degrees C, with plenty of ocean spray around by the beach. Just beautiful.

Groovy trousers chris!

Goergeous weather here today and over the whole weekend. I was even inspired to ride yesterday despite a hangover brought on by our pathetic performance in the footy. How did we throw away a 2-0 victory against Austria (no offence intended to any Austrians who may be reading this)?

Cheers,

Ed

Calamity James strikes again.

Your commute reminded me of the famous British race driver, Graham Hill. When he was a young man, he worked in a machine shop about 100 miles outside London. His wife to be lived in London, and every weekend he would ride his bike 100 miles to London on Friday and ride back home Sunday. When he got to London, he was too tired to do much romancing. But that surely was true love!
