Well today was the first day loaded with my rack and one pannier. Stuffed with 5 days worth of rice and beans, as well as a half ton of tools (bike tools mostly, I'm a dork) and a pair of jeans for work, it felt like it weighed another 25lbs. It was slow going but I rode in to work and had a great ride, arrived fully awake and relaxed. Yes, I had to work labor day but its time and a half so I don't care :p

What a perfect day to commute! Rode in this morning at 4:30 and got to watch the sun rise! Warm, no wind, and best of all... no cars!!! Coming home was a treat too. Very warm and sunny, and still, fewer cars than normal. I could get used to this!
Rykoala, I can sympathize with having to work on Labor day, bummer to have to work when the rest of the world is off, but the extra cash sure comes in handy! (we get double time today!) Kat |
Nice ride home last night. Flat calm on the river. We were right in the middle of a big high pressure system with plenty of miles between isobars = no wind.
This morning, the invisible headwind heading out to the office, but no cloud, lots of sunshine, and a bit of smoke haze (or maybe with all the damned mainlanders moving down here to live, it might be smog... ugh!) Going to spend the rest of the day painting out the new office. |
Had a funeral Saturday, so I switched so that I could work today.
Ride in was near 70F with a steady 15mph wind at 3 o'clock, I saw 6 walkers & only 2 cars! That's less than a Sunday morning ride. This afternoon was somewhere around 80F with a strong 20+mph head wind. Oh well, glad I rode! |

Temperature range of 17-19 degrees C on the commute this morning, yes, it was warming up quickly. Still, that's not as bad as this time last year, when it was 32 degrees C regularly for my 7am commute. The bike handled everything pretty well again this morning after last weekends calamities, but it's going in for some serious repairs tomorrow, so it will be the old beater, the "green machine" coming out to play. |
Man, I really intended to hydrate up for a 100 degree ride...When left the ocean side of the pass, it was 90 plus..When got over the pass to the inland valley's, it was still in the 90's...To think I took in all that Gatorade/Cytomax in prepartion for a really hot ride and it only was in the lo 90's...And to think, I took it really well and did not feel all that hot..With hills and lo 90's, My average speed was 14. That is just ok, for this heat woos. .

Good ride in this morning. Pretty typical. This week may be a rough one. We are supposed to get the after effects of Hurricane Frances. Lots of rain.
|
Good morning all! It was a good ride in this morning... 68 degrees and low humidity and no wind. To make it even better the weather should stay in the high 80s to low 90s all week.

Wow - I did my first commute in on a fixed gear. It was a slightly different route than usual, just over 16 miles. It didn't seem like I was going very fast, but it turned out to be my 3rd best time ever. I guess I coast quite a bit on my geared bike. I did notice that no one passed me this morning.
It was a great morning for a ride, there was no wind and the temps were in the upper 50s. I saw 11 other people out on bikes this morning. |
Beautiful, clear day by the lake, and a really nice ride in. Cool breeze, bite of fall in the air, blue sky - lovely. I made better time today than I did Friday (my first bike commute day!), by about 10 minutes. Still love the Bikestation, and there were actually other women in the locker room today, so that was kind of cool, too.

Welcome to BikeForums Merrish. And welcome to the bike commuting addiction! :D

Well, I had a great long weekend (four days off) and a great ride into work this morning. It was a little cool (52F) but clear skies... dark, but clear. Yep, I have to use the lights in the mornings now, that's a drag, but I do enjoy the beautiful sunrises. I should be a great ride home too, it will be a long time before I have to use them (lights) going home.

Now don't laugh.........I finally hit the 500 mile mark this morning.
Low 50'sF slight tailwind. The road kill is really starting to pick up, saw a racoon & a black mink. Upper 60'sF this afternoon & that head wind was back again! I've been messing with my position the last couple of days, yesterday was that handlebars, today I shifted the saddle forward and up a bit. |
. . .
Today in Merry's Solitary Self-taught Bike Commute Practicum: Headwinds: Nature's Resistance Training or Proof that God Hates Fat Chicks Discuss. Beautiful ride, though -- even at -3 miles per hour, getting passed up by toddlers on foot. The lake was dark, dark blue except where it was crystal green, and the sky went on forever. |

Oh, and yeah, rain overnight settled the dust, cleared the atmosphere, and I had a very fast run into work this morning. A few spots of rain, but nothing to worry about. The cloudy skies and rain still about the mountain obviously scared off the fair-weather riders. |
Should be a frying-pan hot ride home: 99F according to the NWS. C'mon Sun! We can crack triple digits!

Consequently, the Green Machine had a rare outing this morning under overcast skies and temperatures that I *estimate* were around 22 degrees C (the thermometer is on the computer on the other bike, so no official reading today). I copped every red light on the way to work, but that didn't seem to matter too much, the green machine flies! It didn't really feel like I was getting anywhere, but the clock on the time when I arrived at work told a different story. |
I'd like to read the blog, Chris, but the link in your sig comes up as an error -- URL could not be retrieved.

Hmmm, I better look into that.

Nice commute today but definitely getting colder (51F)in the mornings. I wore a long sleeve jersey but stuck with my shorts for the afternoon heat. Finally saw another commuter. He was setup for Winter with a heavy jacket, long wool socks, wool gloves & a stocking cap under his helmet! To top things off, he wore a back pack. Can't imagine he was going to ride very far without overheating.

Ugh, wet this morning and dark. We're drying out from the remains of Frances, this afternoon looks promising.
|
cool today, a bit of a tailwind on the way in, which means low pressure to the south, which means wet weather coming on. i resisted the temptation to hitch a ride on a cement mixer. this has been a full week now of riding the new fixie and i've never been happier!

68 degrees and a little bit of wind that made it a bit nippy. To Metro Bus 1806 and 8806… EAT MY DUST! :p
