Saw a 7 inch box turtle on the bike trail and a blue heron along the river. Then got drenced by the fountains downtown that spray out over the bike trail.

Fantastic ride in! Ride home: just so so. ;-)

Turbonium 09-15-03 05:38 PM

saw a snake, almost ran over a frog.

Nice ride in this morning. Sun coming up, a little bit of a tailwind.

Then as I came to the last km of my commute, on a trail into a little park next to my work, I approached an older couple. They were pushing a stroller with their grand-daughter (I assumed) and two dogs, off-leash. I approached very slowly and said a good morning and announced that I was coming by on their right as the lady was way over to the left pushing the stroller. One dog seems interested in me but showed no signs of aggression. The second dog was up further and first showed no signs of aggression. I continued on and as I passed this second dog, he decided to give chase and showed a lot of aggression, with really nasty barking, growling and showing of teeth. The other dog decided to get into it as well and so I had both dogs after me and each dog was on either side of me, nipping at my feet. I started to accelerate but that only encouraged them and the gravel path didn't provide traction. I threw a water bottle at one of them and missed. I jumped off the bike to get the bike between them and me and see if I could retrive my water bottle.

The couple had trouble to restrain the dogs, but eventually the gentleman was finally able to hold the more aggressive dog. The other dog would make attempts to run at me and I threatened to fling my head-light water-bottle style battery at him. The lady began to berate me for fighting back and insisted that the dogs would not bite. I told her, at this moment I was in no position to find out. Plus, she told me that the sign that is further on the trail shows that no bicycles allowed. I reminded her that I go through the park slowly and is the only way to my office without taking a 8km detour around on paved heavily trafficked roads. ( 22km instead of 30km, what would you do?) She kept on that I shouldn't be in the park with my bike. I didn't know enough to say anything about the dogs.

Anyways, I left after having enough of an argument with ???? and a distaste in my mouth for what happened. I checked out a sign at the other end of the park. Sure enough, no cycling, but dogs allowed but must be on a leash. These dogs were not on a leash as most dogs aren't when I come across people and their dogs in the park. BTW, I come across people in this park about once or twice a week. It is a very little used nature park with gravel paths. There are no direct paved roads or pathways that cut across the business parks in this area and that can take me direct to my office. I would need to travel on a busy highway where the posted speed is 80km/hr. I'll stick to the park even though I'm not allowed.

The ride home was uneventful and the winds had changed by the pm to give me another nice tailwind on the way home. Made up for last week's headwinds.

Then I hear the news of Ken Kifer.

Hi Folks,

Another gorgeous ride in today. Feeling a bit tired after playing football last night with some of the guys from work, so I took it slightly easy.

Cheers,

Ed

wet and windy are the words for this morning, fogged glasses made it hard to see when there was oncomming traffic. All in all it was a good ride, I just plugged along and stretched it out to 1 hours and 15 minutes. I noticed a lot of tree fall out from the night rains, We'll have to see what the evening commute brings.

Oh man does it feel good to be bale to ride my bike to work again!:D After three weeks not being able to ride due to surgery, I was finnaly able to ride again!

Well the ride in this morning was cool. Temps in the mid 50's. I took my time coming in and actually enjoyed the ride. It was nice and refreshing. Looking forward to the ride home!

Nice cool, fast ride this morning. On a side note, I completed my first metric century Sunday...I still have a LONG way to go before the 108-mile Tour de Tucson in November!

LarryJ 09-16-03 08:10 AM

Beautiful sunny and cool ride in this morning. Moderate traffic on Memorial Drive, light traffic
on MLK, and a fast ride nearly the entire distance.

Stubacca 09-16-03 09:02 AM

Great ride in today. Light traffic, blue skies. Nice cool breeze at the start, though it turned into a nasty headwind towards the end.... oh well :D

Had my first puncture yesterday :( It happened a couple of miles from home just opposite the local Honda delearship... where as luck would have it I was picking my car up from its 15000 mile service :D No problem, just wheeled the bike over the road, threw it in the back and went home. I just hope my next puncture is so painless

COLD MORNING... it was !24! degrees F this morning when I left for work. had to wear full fingered gloves and something to cover my ears.

djwid 09-16-03 02:47 PM

Raining commute today. First day back from a business trip. A little chilly but nice. I cleaned my chain yesterday. I want to remember to keep my bike in good shape this winter.

It was cool today. Very nice after three or four days of hot and humid crap. I saw a white-tail deer. That was pretty cool.

tchazzard 09-16-03 07:13 PM

Heavy rain and fog this morning, but still humid (hurricane driving humidity north?). By 1pm the sun came out and it was one of most awesome rides home after work. Bright skies and no wind. The temps were hovering around 66 F. Looking forward to crisp fall mornings.

caloso 09-20-03 04:13 PM

Fell in behind fullsize pickup with a camper top and a hitch rack carrying a well-ridden Klein mtb. We made all the lights and rolled a smooth 30mph down 21st Street. Kids, don't try this at home. But what's normally a 20 minute ride from my house took 11:46. Sweet.

Kodama 09-20-03 06:17 PM

Well barely commuted last week due to being sick. Not so sick to not work, mind you, just too congested to want to exercise. Anyway as we are in "crunch mode" I'm working on saturday, and it was a beautiful day to ride. Since it just feels like a workday I forgot my no bike trail on nice sat. rule, and rode in on that. Not crazy packed as the temps aren't where they used to be, but a lot more packed than they are when I come in during the week. Ah well it'll be night when I ride home, with the trail virtually to myself.

Kodama 09-21-03 08:31 PM

Well the grind continues, for a full weekend of work (and every weekend for the next 3 weeks or so) Anyway today was one of those perfect fall days, warm -over 70, a bit o' wind, and a crispness in the air. Remembering today that it was the weekend, I only rode a bit on the trail, and did some nice road riding. Only did a few hours a work, then biked to the store for my shopping an then back on the trail. It wasn't quite late enough to empty the trail, but with the full load of shopping It was the eaiest route to take. I made real good time, I've been working on keeping the speed up with a full load, with thoughts of loaded touring in mind. Two hot air balloons were out in the dwindling light, and with the temps down it was just a really nice ride.

Andy Dreisch 09-21-03 09:02 PM

Well I've been quite the all-around-town weekend commuter recently. My oldest daughter has recently gotten her license (!!!) which has freed me up to do more around town biking b/c I don't have to be driving her around so much and, in general, has introduced more options. It's been great. Although the routes are not that terrific, it's still good to get the miles in.

This weekend I did just that. I also got a good hill climb in, but not as much as I had hoped.

Tomorrow, it's back to the weekly grind.

mrfix 09-22-03 05:20 AM

Nice September morning, I left the house wearing a light jacket and long fingered gloves, I shed the jacket about half way in and kept the gloves, I found it to be just a bit cool for the jersey only but to warm for the jacket. I had a nice ride under clear skys, the traffic was light and drivers seemed to have more patients with me than usual. Today is forcasted to be a nice day in the north east so we should all have a nice ride home this evening.

chewa 09-22-03 06:14 AM

Woke up to the sound of very heavy rain so took the bus.

Ed Holland 09-22-03 07:13 AM

Hi Folks,

Interesting day: Rode to work as usual, but at lunchtime had to pick up my other bike from the shop (about 6 miles from work). I bussed into Oxford centre to find some guys representing Cyclox, a local bike advocacy group. They were inviting people to record their opinion of the most dangerous parts of town for the cyclist. Of course I gave them some support - It is great that these folks are willing to give up some time for this cause.

Unfortunately the story at the bike shop was a bit of a disappointment. They had done a lovely job replacing the headset, but I ordered new shifters too, and the supplier had sent 7, not 8 speed. Doh! They promised to sort it all out for me without any fuss.

Cheers,

Ed

I suddenly have amazing stamina. I've been riding a bunch recently and yet I'm cooking along at a pretty good clip. My legs definitely are beat but they seem to complain less.

I used up a good amount of energy trying to keep up with San Jose's lightly used Light Rail. You see, the LR has priority w/r/t traffic lights and shadowing the LR allows you to zoom through more signals. Unfortunately my timing was off and I managed to hit just about every traffic light anyway. The LR won out today.

It's going to be in the 100s today. I'm looking forward to the hot, hot, hot ride home.

djwid 09-22-03 07:32 PM

Good commute today. The weather is good (~80F) and clear. I just installed new tires (avocets cross II w/kevlar) and switched my pedals. I love the new tires. The pedals are great too. The ride in was about 11 min and the ride home 10. Pretty good. I did get 20 miles in during lunch.

Kodama 09-22-03 08:08 PM

Nice morning ride today, though the weekend of working really sapped my energy. Clear and warm it was a nice (slow) ride in.

Andy Dreisch 09-22-03 08:41 PM

It wasn't as hot as predicted today. I was looking forward to a masochistic ride home with a major climb but I opted instead for a slightly different route with no hills. Still did a fast 20 miles home.
