Yesterday, it was some sun and clouds, cool in the morning and much less wind! It was nice leaving off the leg warmers for the ride out of the mountains on the way home.

I was a bit shocked; I did not think I rode that hard on my ride up the mountain in to work, but my Cateye said I set a PR for time and average speed.....I'll take that.

A beautiful ride this morning

This was my first commute since the beginning of winter. Back in late November I decided I wanted to commute through the winter (except for rainy/snowy days). I had all the cold-weather gear and had commuted a couple times when it was down to 27F, and I loved it. Then some rainy/icy weather came and I just never got back into it... until this morning. Yep, 4 months. I was very disappointed in myself.

Anyway, this morning made up for it. Low 40s and sunny, and I was worried about how I'd feel my first time back on. I do an 11 mile commute from Mount Airy into Center City Philly. I'm surprised; I made it in about 45 minutes, which is my typical commute time, and it felt so good. I'm just so tickled to be back on the bike; it's a helluva stress reducer. We'll see how the uphill commute back home is...

Sam :)

Finally! My first commute of the year! Yes, I'm a fair weather commuter and today was a great day to get back on the bike: 47F and not a cloud in the sky. Hopefully, this year, I can surpass my mileage of last year. I didn't do much spinning this winter as previous years but I did take a cross-fit class (cardio and weights) at my gym and we did a ton of squats. It is paying off -- I have so much more power now. Saw about 12 or so riders this morning -- all guys except for two other ladies, but I think they were just out for a pleasure ride, not commuting.

The temperature was –1 C but it is expected to be +20 by mid afternoon. Lots of layers to be carried for the return ride. It is difficult to decide what to wear with such a gain in temperature. Hang in there DataJunkie, spring should be there soon right?

It is here. That is the problem. Early to mid spring is an interesting mix of winter weather and 70F temps.
No biggie. Just part of living in Colorado.

Yep, I still rode in this morning. It was just raining sleet snow, nothing is sticking yet since its so warm. We're back in the 70's on Tuesday.

32F, calm and clear on the ride in - hardly any traffic in the suburban sprawl. My rear reflector popped off - broken. Glad I have a tail light.
Should be about 70F when I ride home - toting all that clothing from this morning. Gotta get some panniers for these Chicago spring/fall days. My little rack top bag doesn't hold much.

Nice ride in, I showed the bike a little love last night and it seems to have paid off. I removed the wheels, wiped everything down, lubed the brake and shifter cables, cleaned the cable guide on the underside of the bottom bracket and lubed (made a huge difference, I had been having shifting issues and thought it was the rr. der and/or cable), inflated tires, etc. The ride was smooth and fast. I need to factor in some time to strip the bike down completely and tune up/clean/etc, this is not the time of year to be off the bike though. Should be low 70's for the ride home.

Huh. You too? I wiped down the rims, tweaked some stuff, was rewarded with a nice run in, this morning. Saw another guy going the opposite way, and three others on the way in. Cool in the morning, 40Fs but expected to be in the 60-70F on the way home. Sunny and clear as a bell, out.

50F and drizzly. Trailered 4 yr old to preschool rather than riding w/ 7 yr old to letter school (as the 4 yr old calls it).

Usually my wife trailers her downtown and I pull her up the hill at the end of the day. In the am, going to the office rather than home, I didn't really have a route in muscle memory so decided on a particular way to get where I wanted to. Caught at a bunch of red lights in a different sequence than would let me go home on the same roads, and a bunch of right-on-reds later was on the exact road out of downtown I was intending to avoid. Oh well, got a couple less blocks of it anyway.

I took a 20km detour this morning and went for a nice ride through the river valley. I wish i'd brought my camera.

Hey PC...we have to hook up one of these Sunday mornings and go for a non-commute.

I want to lay down a century here pretty soon too.

My wife had an early meeting this morning so it was up to me to get the kids to preschool. At breakfast my daughter said "Daddy, can we ride the bikes to school today? Please**********"

Well, how can you say no to that? So we put her on the trailer bike and my son rides his own two-wheeler. I didn't have anything pressing on my desk today so we were able to wait until the morning rush had calmed down. Just a mellow spin through Midtown. A wonderful way to start the day.

First commute of the year for me here in Buffalo, NY. 13.4 miles, a little under 1 hour. I commute one-way to save time, still lets me get an hour on the bike.

35F when I left the house, felt like the temperature dropped as I rode south. Regretted not using winter gloves and not covering my toes. The tennis shoes on platform pedals and lightweight cycling gloves let my fingers and toes turn into icecubes before the end of the ride. I don't know if it was the cold or lack of fitness, but I was a bit light-headed and seeing strange light patterns when I closed my eyes. I've been spinning all winter, and thought I was in decent shape.

I commuted on my MTB with a friend who has a $3K Look road bike. He was on a rest day before a race on Sunday, and I was still pushing my doctor-mandated upper HR of 150. Average HR 148 for the entire trip.

Need to work out the kinks in my logistics, arrived at work without my car keys (I drove in and left my car at work last night) or my underwear. I always wanted to be a commando! The wife drove out and met me for lunch so that I have keys.

Nice ride home. 60sF! :twitchy: I took the long way home, through fields and woods and stuff. I tried this last Friday and got fouled up. This time I paid attention. It adds 4 miles but it's a really nice MTB ride.

I stopped and took a picture of some cows with my iPhone. :) The Winooski (Onion) River is in the foreground.

Slowed up to a red light and a fellow on a fixed gear rolled up beside me. I don't know if it was seeing the FG that made me do it... but I started clipping out to put a foot down as if I were on a FG too, which is a bit different than clipping out on a geared bike (I was on my Volpe). So I fudged it all up and looked mighty silly. I didn't go down, but it was still embarrassing. Bluggh.

I suck at riding bikes.

buzzman 04-17-09 08:13 PM

speedy ride in speedy ride home... then did a quick 23 mile road ride... then did a 4 mile ride for groceries and errands. totaled 45 miles today. nice day.:)

Pig_Chaser 04-17-09 09:54 PM

Street sweepers were out in force cleaning up the winter's gravel. I gave each and every one the thumbs up.

duckbill 04-18-09 06:53 AM

Saturday is usually my peaceful quiet commute but today for some reason the traffic was as bad as a weekday. Where the hell is everybody going at 7:30 am on a Saturday? Go back to bed don't you know the roads belong to me? First day in this year with double-digit temperatures, + 10 C. :)

chephy 04-19-09 07:47 PM

The BLOODY ****ING ***** of a HEADWIND today. Cold one, too. I want to take a huge kitchen knife and stab that wind until it dies in pain.

Wake 04-19-09 07:59 PM

Had to work Saturday, which made the third day of commuting this week. Great weather - sunny, mid-70's. On the way back I stopped along the airport runway to watch some fighters, bombers, etc land/takeoff for the air show at Thunder over Louisville. Had lots of company from cagers and stinky (motor) bikers.

MIKEnDC 04-20-09 04:34 AM

Rainy day,
Rain all day.
Ain't no use in gettin' uptight
Just let it groove its own way...

Oh wait. This isn't 50+, is it? :o

vtjim 04-20-09 06:02 AM

Another sunny morning. Temps climbed quickly through the 30sF during my ride. Looks like rain later, and for most of the week. :( Saw a couple of trail hotties out for a morning run. :o

MCODave 04-20-09 06:27 AM

Back commuting after many months off. Felt good, although MUCH slower than I used to be. My main worry was that I would forget something or get a flat, neither of which happened.

duckbill 04-20-09 06:42 AM

Light rain this morning with the temperature around +5 C. The rain is washing some of the salt off the road but because the public works department have nothing better to do then salt the area roads we need a good strong down pour to really clean the streets. Sorry for the rant but every year the city says they are going to be more responsible and use less salt but every year they end up using just as much as the year before which is too much.:twitchy:

neilfein 04-20-09 07:38 AM

Did my first ride with a new luggage setup. I installed a Klickfix adapter over the weekend, to attach my handlebar bar to the folding bike. I can now commute without a backpack. The handlebar bag also balances out the trunk rack nicely, the bike handles a bit better loaded.

dcrowell 04-20-09 08:06 AM

Wet and breezy. I'd better get used to riding in all weather now that I don't have a car.
