Holy bike commuters batman, they're everywhere now.
|
I need to stop doing boneheaded moves like cutting in front of trucks through rapidly shrinking gaps. It's fun, but I should know better. If only drivers would stop forcing me to ride circles around them with their bovine-like wandering.
|
got around the herds of cars just fine...they are very bovine like aren't they?
this made me chuckle |
Very nice weather this morning, almost time to loose the jacket and gloves on the way in. 1 other bike commuter on my route. Bike rack out back is full, though.
|
35F and sunny. No kid leg this am, solo door-to-door, +2mph on my rate!
|
It was a balmy 40F this morning and the commute was pretty wonderful being that it was my girl's first commute to school ever... they thought it was awesome and did not think riding 5 km / 3 miles was anything special although some other parents were amazed we rode a distance of 40 city blocks.
Perhaps a few folks might find some inspiration in this and see if they can fill that bike rack. |
Ran into Strida Lady again today. Had a nice chat about bikes for about 10 minutes while waiting for our respective trains.
It's a gorgeous day! Sunny, warm, and I'm off tomorrow. |
The recent snow is finally gone and it was a chilly -2c this morning but glorious to be back on the bike after a long hard winter. +7c on the way home should be awesome.
|
44F, calm, and blue sky. Perfection.

Second day ever commuting, 12 miles each way from Brooklyn to midtown Manhattan and back. My God am I SLOW. Granted I was loaded down like I was heading on a two-week vacation the first day, but even with a somewhat lighter load the 2nd trip I wasn't that much quicker.
Today was gorgeous compared to slogging through 44F rain the first time 'round! I quit smoking 105 days ago, and am trying to shed the extra 10 lbs that snuck up on me... I guess with full pannier and extra poundage I'm bound to feel pokey! This better get better :) Pingu |

But better than the crap we've had to ride in the last few days. This morning had some fog that was cool. I could see the beam coming off of my flashlight 'er' I mean my headlight. The aftn was 64f and sunshiny. I wore a long sleeve jersey, cotton shorts and sandals with the socks on. I listened to Pink Floyd on the radio. Life is groovy. _________________ |
The afternoon commute (with the girls) went really well although I was happy to have made it home without having to walk...
The retaining pin on my v-brake cartridge seems to have backed itself out just enough to have scrubbed the sidewall of my tyre which was showing some good damage after just 20 - 30 km km of riding. It was fine when I checked it the other day and have not ridden the bike much at all. I had been meaning to swap to thinner faster tyres so installed a 20 by 1.35 Primo Comet I had up front which, at 100 psi, will roll out much faster than the 60 psi 1.95 Kenda. Now I have to go and pick up a mate for the Comet and get that installed... and they are evil little tyres to get on. I am looking forward to the performance upgrade. |
My front tire, the one without the tire liner, blew on the ride home this evening- luckily I was within walking distance to my front door. It's a Gatorskin, and I'm hoping it's tube failure, not tire failure. Time to go to the LBS and give them some business...

the ride home was a blast today!
i got to ride the trail that's near my house too as part of my ride home i think i need a cross bike :) |
Owwwwwww.....
I guess this is what I get for thinking I can just pop back on the bike after awhile off and cover 50+ miles in 48 hours. I know that's probably a laughable distance to most of you, but my knees are wailing at me. I blew them out training for Barcelona (a million years ago now, gah!) and for some reason my brain hasn't caught up that my body isn't 15 anymore  Still, I'd better look like Dara Torres by the end of this summer:p
Anyway, is this mostly guys here commuting? I'm just interested to see how many women are doing the daily slog? I saw this tiny woman on a fixed gear puffing up the Brooklyn Bridge this morning - wearing tall Doc Martins and green tuxedo pants and a messenger bag the size of her torso! It could not have been comfortable! Stace/Pingu |
I am sitting under a blanket with a heating pad. Please forgive my typing.
On the way home 1. 38F 2. Light to moderate rains 3. 20 mph headwind 3. No rain gear. 4. 31 miles home I freaking froze and was having issues the last 5 miles just moving my legs. I stopped under an overpass to put on a poly exercise shirt and a pair of wool socks I was taking home. My base layers were almost dry. A little voice in my head was telling me to shorten the ride and take the bus. Someday I should start listening to it. I ate almost 1400 calories in 15 min after getting home. ugh |
My commute last saturday was close to that. Remember the winds? I worked 13hrs and then rode into a head wind, good times.
|
:eek:Wow- I'm never complaining again. Hats off to both of you! (or helmets...)

Dang it I wish I had flipped my wheel to a SS before leaving. My legs hate me. |
beautiful ride in this morning- great weather, a bit windy but sunny and warmer than it's been in ages.
the ride home was great, too, but I was reminded that some people do not like to be passed on their bikes. Especially when they are on an expensive lightweight bike and fully decked out in cycling wear, which I sometimes am myself- but not for my commute. For my commute I am in jeans and on a relatively inexpensive hybrid bike with milk crate. I passed two separate cyclists in such attire and on such bikes and man, did they give chase with a vengeance. I think one sat on my wheel for a while and then shot around me as we were coming up on an intersection. I attempted to engage him in conversation as we were stopped at the light but I think he thought I'd passed him to make a statement- I really didn't- he was just traveling about 3 mph slower than I was as I approached and I lingered about 30' back for a while but then just wanted to get rolling so I passed him. I let him go ahead of me at the light and let him set his own pace, which was then just a mile per hour slower than what I'd have been going on my own so I didn't pass again. But in so doing we passed another guy and suddenly he was chasing us down at the next light. I think it's that time of year. I was glad I wasn't going all the way home but meeting some friends in Harvard Square so I was able to turn off and leave them to their little race. I know that otherwise I'd have been tempted to kick it up a notch or two and make them work real hard but the risk is that I'd have worn myself out and humiliated myself by so doing.:o |
Interesting week of riding for me. Mornings mostly like today: upper 30s to lower 40s--say between +3 and 5C) with light showers here and there. Afternoons a bit more hair-raising with steady rain a couple of days and some clearly not-so-steady motorists (one dude buzzed me doing near 70 mph).
Yesterday afternoon's ride was a real prize though: bright sunshine and about 60F/15C. I finally broke out a pair of shorts! I'm not sure what was brighter: my neon-creamcicle orange Alert Shirt or my lily-white legs. :D Supposed to be more of the same (but warmer) today. I have prepared for this eventuality by already putting in for a half day off... |
5 out of 5 days this week: Sunny skies. :) Temps today in the low 30sF. No wind. I got a stick or something in my chainring. I extracted it on the MUP at a road intersection. Meanwhile a guy on a bare-bones roadbike entered the MUP from the road. He was dressed like he knew what he was doing. He rode like it, too. I barely reeled him in, we were going about 23MPH. I started breathing hard so I slowed back down. :D (Keep in mind I'm riding a 30+ pound dualie Trek with fat knobbed tires.)

Nice ride in, I showed the bike a little love last night and it seems to have paid off. I removed the wheels, wiped everything down, lubed the brake and shifter cables, cleaned the cable guide on the underside of the bottom bracket and lubed (made a huge difference, I had been having shifting issues and thought it was the rr. der and/or cable), inflated tires, etc. The ride was smooth and fast. I need to factor in some time to strip the bike down completely and tune up/clean/etc, this is not the time of year to be off the bike though. Should be low 70's for the ride home.

great ride this morning...sunny and no wind
i took my camera with me so i could shoot parts of my commute i am off from work next week so i will have to find another route to ride every morning, i may just let the bike legs rest and do some running :thumb: |
I saw the weather report for Colorado and the four corners, wow do I feel lucky with light winds and blue sky as far as the eye can see.
The temperature was –1 C but it is expected to be +20 by mid afternoon. Lots of layers to be carried for the return ride. It is difficult to decide what to wear with such a gain in temperature. Hang in there DataJunkie, spring should be there soon right? |
