My ride to work is always the same. 5 miles, not much exciting happens. It always ends in the same place and then I have to start work.
But, my ride home...that can be very exciting. It can be 5 miles long or 25 miles long, or longer. It can go over the hills or around them. It can be along the river, down a country road, through the woods. It can be on the side of the road or on the bike path or both, for that matter. My ride home is the most relaxing part of my day and even more so since I started riding a recumbent. I actually get to see the beauty of God's creation instead of the road right in front of my front tire. And when I get done with my ride home I am...well, I'm home. Now go take the dog for a walk. |
great tailwind on the way in today. flew downtown.
Ride home on the bike path tonight with a wind right in my face for a while and then the wind came around behind me again and pushed me home. all in all nice bike riding day. |
I had fun today. Chose a street I haven't ridden on for a long time: it's peppered with stop signs and jaywalking university students, but that's exactly what I wanted: a slow relaxed pedal through a happy pedestrian area. Cheered me up.
And on the way back I tried a new route and got lost. I enjoyed it. |
Cold. FOr some reason, even without the wind blowing, it was nice and chilly. My toes and my fingers were cursing me by the end. But considering the weather (bitter cold, snow, etc) lately, I'm glad I at least got to commute in once this week (Tommorow is out, @#$@$ weather).

10cm of snow forecast. It's been coming down pretty hard as rain over night. Could be an interesting commute home.

As for your question, I do everything I can to not block a right turn lane especially when it's not really a turn lane but an improvised turn lane. People trying to turn right are typically looking over the shoulder at oncoming traffic and not where they are going. I don't think it's safe to be where they are going at that time. In a situation like you described, I would either pull far enough forward that the right turners cross behind me or I stop far enough back they the right turners cross in front of me. |
hoo boy did I overdress today...
weather said sunny and 32 degrees as I was getting dressed, but it must have reached 38 by the time I walked out the door, and I was toasty by the time I got to work. weather.com now says it's only 40, but lack of wind and the sun definitely seem to be adding some heat. that, or my internal furnace is burning hotter than usual lately. |
Bad day for commuting here. Several cars passed me very close, then I had a very similar experience to swalter84's first one. Left me pi$$ed off for the rest of my ride.
I'm hoping seeing my daughter at lunch (visiting her new day care to check it out) and test-riding 2 potential new bikes after work will help me get over it. |
Sunny, frosty morning, no wind. Nice ride, but heavy traffic, 1/2 mile backups typical. Glad I was on the bike today.

Did some wild, multi-lane zig zagging today getting around double and triple parked cars, buses, cabs, etc. Carried the speed off the downhill for a few blocks and stayed in the middle lane keeping up w/ traffic until traffic slowed, then went back to lanesplitting and zig zagging. Hit a top speed of 85.8 mph. Computers never lie!

85.8?! :p
Temperature still hovering around 32F this morning, with an okay tailwind. Saw some Canada Geese and a pretty happy lab. Nothing unusual to report. |
Let's see - it's raining, the forecast is for 4" of snow, and I dropped my chain on the way in. If I make it home without walking, I'll be a happy guy.

First commute in on the bike today. It's 9 miles from my house to Light Rail. And the train ride gave me time to cool off since we don't have showers at work. The one problem I had is I shoulda put my booties on. Probably should have dug out the full fingered gloves, but my fingers weren't cold, just my toes.

Finally.. between traveling, working in another location, vacation, and a couple of lazy days, I'm back on the bike!
Ride in was a brisk 34 degrees with a killer headwind. Had to be 25mph plus as it cost me four gears on the level. In true Colorado fashion, the wind will likely spin 180 degrees so I can have the same headwind going home. Weather man said slight chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. It was raining 20 minutes ago, and now it's snowing. Why bother listening to those clowns...sigh. Gotta ride long and hard these days. RideTheRockies is in a couple months and I'm waaaaay behind on training. Not to mention the 20# winter insulating layer that needs to be shed. Don |

An embarrassment of riches: Two bikes at work. With tri season coming up, I need to get more running in. I'd planned to run at lunch but a last-minute meeting came up. So I decided I'd just run home with the vague plan that I'd pick up the bike later that evening while running some other errands in the minivan. And of course, that got set aside too.
So I rode my race bike to work, put that in the bike box, and moved the fixed gear over to the bike cage in the next building. I don't have a u-lock, but it is a locked cage. I suppose it's possible for a ne'er do well bike thief to walk in with a fellow commuter and walk out with the fixed gear but I'm figuring that the average bike thief would break his neck trying to ride it. |
Sunny but cold. Supposed to be down to 30s tonight too. You'd think this was New England or something.

I'm Pathetic
So I'm at home sick and really want to be on a bicycle. Feeling boredom and the need to do something, I resume fiddling with handlebar positions and mulling over what length to cut my stem to. Eventually though I find myself sitting on the bike, leaning against the kitchen cabinet with both feet on the pedals, and daydreaming about riding. How sad.
I've had food poisoning since Sunday and haven't eaten much of anything since Saturday night. I don't think the intelligence level of my posts has gone down, which tells you how much thought I put into them anyways considering how lightheaded I am right now. My post count has gone up in the past three days though... |

Florida cold on the way in this morning. But I broke the 200 mile mark since I started commuting.
I had to haul some heavy tools home from work today and I caught a light rain on the way home. Its supposed to rain all day tomarrow so I am waiting on the rain to let up some so I can go get a rain coat or poncho (any suggestoions?). It was great to see the looks on my co-workers faces today. One of them told me it was going to rain all day tomarrow, thinking that I would drive in tomarrow. And I told him "I guess I am gonna have to ride up to Wal-Mart tonight and get a poncho then". |
