Man that sucks. I swear Atlanta has the wors a$$hole drivers in the world.

I did not commute in today. I worked 14+ hours yesterday and rode home at 10:00 last night. Was a little chilly at that time. Also, wtf is with the damn SUV drivers here in Alpharetta. I was on Windward Parkway which is a 45 mph 4 lane divided road. At that time of the night, the traffic was extremely light and yet these JAM could not move over into an empty left lane, they have to pass me at 50+ mph and about 1 ft separating me from their front quarter panel! I mean WTF!

No snow here in Lincolnshire, just 25mph winds and rain to deal with. Had some hairy moments with the wind coming from my left alongside a main road (even at 7.30am it was busy) trying to push me into the traffic. Took me about 15 minutes longer than usual, which I think isn't bad. Mind, my helmet nearly flew away when I took it off!

I bussed it today. It was icy out this morning and I busted my butt at work last night getting caught up on things so I decided not to kill myself and have a nice relaxing bus ride in. The bus takes a long time, and I had to walk about half a mile once I got off. It was a good reminder of why I prefer to ride.

cool and damp this morning, a constant rattle all the way in turned out to be 2 loose spokes on my front wheel.

I have that same problem over on this side of town. Message to motorists: if there's an empty lane use it.

Still spring-like weather in Toronto. Warm and windy today. Nice riding. Was just dawdling there for a while but then got passed by a couple of folks and picked up my pace. :)

kbrown 01-11-07 08:10 PM

I made my first commute today. I wasn't going to but the weather was just right. I got my bike last night and before that I haven't ridden except for once for 3 days while my truck was broken down I just borrowed my friends old bike.

I left at 6:35 this morning and it's down hill the whole way to work and I had a tailwind the whole mile and a half. I was to nervous to ride on any streets without shoulders since I got it last nite rode about 5 miles and that was it. I just rode around where I live so their wasn't a lot of cars. I take an hour lunch so I rode next door and ate in about 15 minutes and rode around practiced emergency braking and played around a bit. The ride home was of course uphill with a headwind. Still made the trip in 15 minutes though and didn't have to walk the bike at all. I won't be able to ride to work again until at least tuesday since it's supposed to rain but at least I know I can do it.

Interesting commute Today.

Ran into a section of HHP access road covered from side to side with Black ice while running down to Broadway off the ridge in Riverdale. There is an underground stream that sometimes floods the road on the steepest downhill section going into a right hand bend. It's been so warm this Winter. The thought of ice forming just wasn't there. It was one of those "Oh ****" moments. No time to stop. Hit the brakes to get rid of some speed. Just tried to be relaxed and upright. It worked. No crash. Thank Dog there was no ice in the corner.

Then on the way home just about became a hood ornament for one of those new Landrovers up on Frederick Douglass North of Macombs. L3? whatever.

I know he was moving fast because I hardly heard him until the last Second. What I heard were pedestrians going, "Ah ****!" as he apparently tried to do a high speed pass around someone in the left lane by running into the right (mine) lane. He was in a big hurry to get to the nonstop traffic jam that is the FDR/Harlem River Drive split. Snuck a peek over my shoulder and there was his grill right on my ass. Can't say I was too upset even though this could have been curtains pretty easily.. It happened so fast and there was so little warning.

He blew by on the left as soon as he had the clearance. Real jake of him.

Saw him stuck in traffic a couple of blocks later on the FDR access road, the *******.

It just seems to be impossible to have a relatively safe commute around here. No matter how conservative you ride there is always a situation sooner rather than later.

I am really starting to hate cars.

the morning ride was really nice. all the snow has been flattened down - uh, flat - by cars, and it never got above freezing all night, so it was just really smooth and steady. hardly any ruts anywhere, but i kept my speed down a bit anyway just in case. the only thing that worried me was gravity, specially once i discovered my brakes need replacing again and i was doing parts of the ride by braking with one foot trailed on the ground. i skipped the last few really steep blocks i usually use heading down to the bridge because of it, and went across to where there was a sidewalk instead, and less of a slope.

rode all the way over the bridge - yay. it was rough and chunky in spots, but so much better than last month. that's probably partly me being much stronger after a month of the studded tires, but it was also just easier snow to deal with. i took buses most of the way home though, because of the brakes. i REALLY need to pick up new pads. that was the only thing wrong with the morning ride.

the guy on the other side of my desk asks every day if i rode, but he just laughs at everything i say after that. i think it's just because he doesn't know what else to do, so i don't take it personally. there's an edge of the hysterical-giggle in it. i do try sometimes to convince people that i'm so cautious and stodgy in weather like this that there's absolutely nothing exciting about me riding, but it doesn't seem to sink in somehow. his elbow is getting better, i'm glad to say.

vtjim 01-12-07 07:13 AM

Dark and windy. Slightly above freezing though. 35MPH wind blowing off the lake, into my face.

First ride on the Hakka W106 tires. I mounted them last night. Far less rolling resistance than the original knobby tires. They're quieter too, even with the studs. With the headwind, on snow, I was riding almost as fast as I ride on dry pavement with no wind with the knobby tires. I guess I'll swap them for more road-like tires in the spring. :o

bikebuddha 01-12-07 07:16 AM

I over slept this morning and I briefly considered driving, but I knew without my morning ride I would be complete rubbish at work today so I got on the bike and rode in.

idcruiserman 01-12-07 08:44 AM

9F this morning, which is the coldest day yet. First day I wasn't overdressed :). Had my first wreck of the season. Coming down a short hill to the main road into work, and I noticed the car in front of me sliding all over the place trying to stop at the stop sign. My HID battery had died shortly before, so I didn't see the ice. I scrubbed some speed, put one foot down, and down I went. Thankfully on my big a$$, so I didn't feel it. Unfortunately the mount to my handlebar light broke.

Starting to wish I had ordered those studded tires after all. Maybe I will . . .

acroy 01-12-07 08:49 AM

55F and drizzly this am, still breezy from the South. The wether dudes swear a cold front is comg, bringing ice and snow and such... but i doubt it.
First day on the new Schwalbe Marathon 1.75" tires. nice ride, very svelte and smooth. my all-time most bulletproof tires to date have been Nimbus Armadillo, got alomst 3k miles out of those with very few flats. the Schwalbe sure rides a lot better, we'll see how they hold up.

ModoVincere 01-12-07 09:01 AM

Really nice ride in this morning. Mid 40's F and cloudy skies. No real buzzes and a co-worker even passed me in the other lane to be nice.

GTcommuter 01-12-07 10:01 AM

No bike this morning but I did walk in because I had to go to the dentist and it's right on the way to the office. Plus I started to replace the cables late last night but got tired and went to bed before I finished.

rustycool7 01-12-07 10:08 AM

Rode in early this AM for 0600 Army PT. Temp was about 38 so not to bad. I crossed the Battlefield park in full darkness so I didn't see any deer but I could sure here them. Have a great weekend and happy MLK day.

HardyWeinberg 01-12-07 10:19 AM

cold! Radio said 14F out. Closed the pitzips on my coat, kept the facemask on all the way in (tried it yesterday but had to pull it down, too much eyeglass fog).

caloso 01-12-07 10:37 AM

Chilly (32F/0C with the windchill down to 22F). I was worried about frost on the lemon trees last night but the wind blew all my tarps off. Of course, if the wind is that strong, there's not much chance of frost settling. Anyway, about the commute...

I've received nothing but compliments about my new hi-viz green jacket. Of course the compliment is always followed by "But can you believe those idiots who ride around in all black with no lights?" Yeah, I know. It's dangerous.

pinkrobe 01-12-07 11:02 AM

So much warmer than yesterday! 'Twas a balmy -12C when I left the house, and it's supposed to get up to -9C. Time to dig out the shorts... ;)

The commute today was....exciting.

At one point on my route I cross over a major highway on an overpass. The overpass is 8 lanes wide--2 straight-thru lanes in each direction, a left-turn lane for each direction, and a break-down lane for each direction.

I was stopped at a light just before the overpass with a car in front of me and a line of traffic behind. I'd taken the lane--I don't ride in the break-down lane on the overpass; I've already popped a tire there because of the debris plus it's just not safe. The light changed, and we all started pulling away from the light. The car behind me honked. I ignored it. Suddenly I heard the engine revving, and the car behind me pulled into the break-down lane to pass me, then went back into the thru lane and sped off.

Normally I'm VERY non-confrontational, but my blood was boiling. The car pulled into an office complex about a mile ahead. I lost it for a little bit, but spotted it in a day-care parking lot. I went inside and asked if anyone there knew the driver. They didn't, but they said if they saw her (it was a woman, I saw that as she passed me) they'd tell her. I borrowed a piece of paper and a pen and left a note on the car's windshield expressing my anger. I even gave her my phone number in case she wants to discuss it further.

That was a few hours ago. Haven't had a call yet, unfortunately.

Congrats kbrown and welcome to the HWTCT thread! Hope to see many more posts.

As for me, I bussed it this morning since the wife is picking me up from work this afternoon. We're leaving straight from here to go to the in-law's a couple of hours away. But I went all out on the way home yesterday knowing I'm not riding again until Tuesday AM. Chilly (42°F), but I'm enjoying my new rack trunk.

luckysnafu 01-12-07 12:45 PM

Much warmer this morning with temps around 40. Had a pretty regular commute in. Looking forward to riding home in shorts this afternoon.

Thank you Vice Admiral B for welcoming our newest member! As Itsjustb said, women lust after us, men want to be us and if you're a woman, it's the other way around. Grab a donut and tell your slothful co-worker that your fuel tastes much better than his!
