Didn't ride today.

I had to drive and pick up my carpooling buddy because his car is going in the shop today.

Flimflam 06-13-07 07:02 AM

Last night: Terrible headwind going west after work, made progress hard at times but not so bad.

Picked up my back wheel for the roadie and re-fitted it ready to ride. Ended up taking it for an evening run over to a friends and back later that night.

This morning:

Very tired due to a late night last night, and the night before... Still rode, couldn't resist the ride on my roadie - took it easy and ended up getting here in the same time as on my MTB yesterday.

edited to give time of day references to make sense (so... damn... tired :p)

the last 2 weeks:
CONSTANT HEADWINDS
I go West in the AM and East in the PM. The wind switches from out of the SW in the AM to out of the SE in pm. So I have a bloody headwind the entire time. gar!
i did get a cooling drizzle this morning - very nice!

Nice commute.

Bicycle commuters at my work are multiplying. It has gone from 1 or 2, to 6. People who I would never consider riding are showing up on their bikes.

DataJunkie 06-13-07 07:51 AM

ARGH!

You think I would learn to take a test ride after working on a bike. It working on the repair stand does not necessarily equate to working on the road.
This was my first time replacing all my cables and a variety of other work. Still have plenty of things to work on.

-My worthless adjustable stem was not exactly locked in place. Annoying thing is getting to be a pain. May need to replace it early. I did tighten is.
-I adjusted my FD such that the extra shift for the trim adjustment was on the middle chainring.
-My RD is having random shifting issues on my two most used gears. The fact that I put a new chain on complicates things. I would think chain slip would occur instead of ghost shifting if it was the cassette and chain having issues getting along. The cassette does have a few thousand miles on it.
-I adjusted the brakes nice and tight. Unfortunately, the front housing was flipped away from the bars. When flipped back the brakes are locked up. May need to loosen the cable.

Not to mention that drop bars look odd without bar tape and I have yet to cap my cables.

I must be getting the f ups out of the way early. :p

A thumbs up would be that I did make it to work.

Had a chance to educate a car driver yesterday. Riding down a very bumpy industrial road with a center turn lane. A lady in a Jeep wouldn't pass me for about 2-3 minutes. Cars were stacking up behind her and I waved her by twice. She finally slowly passed me right before the red light. I rode up and tapped on her window. She rolled it down and I just said "It's OK to pass. We know you're there." and I tried to be friendly and smile.

I think she got the message.

Besides that, extremely strong headwind. Good training ride.

Disappointing today. I woke up to a nice thunderstorm, but it had petered out by the time I climbed on the bike. I was looking forward to that little bit of extra adrenaline... oh well, there's always this afternoon.

Last night was 15mph 45 deg headwind gusting to 30. Great ride. I was pretty pumped up leaving the office after checking weather.com.

kafkaesque 06-13-07 08:28 AM

Good weather this morning. Fast ride in despite about of quarter mile stretch of construction that was covered in loose gravel. It was real loose and dusty on my ride home yesterday, but this morning the tire tracks were pretty solid. They were working on it; could be black and smooth by the time I go home.

JR97 06-13-07 08:33 AM

I caught a car ride in yesterday because my ride home monday left me depleted of energy. Plus, I wanted to bring in a bunch of clothes shoes because I'm sick of humping a loaded bike both ways every damn day.

Anywho, I had the offer to carpool again, but just that one day off the bike left a big empty void. So I biked it in this morning. Not having a loaded bike was great. Added 2 mph to the avg. There were 2 other bikers waiting for a train to pass. The competition bug reared it's head and I had to beat them off the blocks. But I think next time I'll take it easy and maybe even engage in some idle chit chat.

edit: forgot to add that some dude was riding the wrong way. This road has a "bike" lane, but it's smaller than most shoulders. Because he was going against traffic, I took the curb and let him take the road to pass since he could see what was coming and I couldn't. I was tempted to educate the guy, but he was kinda scary. Big full parka, missing some teeth, and had that Deliverence look to him.

Not the greatest commute today -- Wednesdays never are, what with aikido Tuesday evening and getting up at 5 am Wednesday. Today there was also a headwind and chilly drizzle from this damn storm that can't seem to get itself away from the coast. On the upside, when there's an onshore breeze, the air in Boston always smells wonderfully fresh and briny!

MyPC8MyBrain 06-13-07 08:45 AM

Ride home last night was rainy and cold.. really cold. I think we've had one day of summer here this yeah. Had to fly because i had scheduled to drop off the bike at the shop for front deraileur upgrade and final tune.

Had to drive the gas sucking pig in this am. Was kind of nice because I was up too late playing cards last night :) Weather was once again pretty sucky this am anyways.

evblazer 06-13-07 08:48 AM

Sometimes I like people who won't pass and right hook me. Sometime I wish they would pass me but I guess how are they to know I'm about to collapse going up a hill. When someoen slows behind me I try and stand to pedal a little faster to clear the upcoming turnoff for them.

Took the loong route home which involved alot of pretty long tall hills, texas wise anyways, and it was a really nice ride. Realized we have lots of blind corners and hills around here and it seems people weren't willing to pass me on them fearing what was on the other side. For being 93+ degrees it was actually pretty darn cool out.

I came in this morning at 5AM with only a single little white led forward (normal lighting elsewhere though) since my wife and I's dinotte lights are in for upgrades. It is amazing how well I know my main commuting route. I instinctively know when I need to move over and when I need to do a little bunny hop over that 4" gap that crosses the whole road. Took it a little slower since I was going by twilight but it was a really nice ride. I think in total I saw less then 20 cars in my 11 mile commute and there was only 5 cars at work when I got here in a parking lot meant for hundreds.

HardyWeinberg 06-13-07 09:10 AM

Nice cool ride in, misty then stopped. Just straight commute, no kids or other errands.

jyossarian 06-13-07 09:22 AM

Managed to pick all the wrong lines through traffic this morning. The traffic problems were compounded by all the right turners and people turning right from the middle lanes and all the cars trying to get around the right turners. Also had to deal with a wrong way cyclist coming at me while we were splitting lanes! Lastly, I saw a guy on what looked like a brand new fixie, newly covered in innertubes with one blue and one red wheel. He looked a little unsure of himself too so I'm guessing it's his first fixie so bravo to him for braving the traffic.

Buglady 06-13-07 09:32 AM

Bleah. Woke up with migraine aura, took the bus. Should have either biked, or stayed home. Weather change coming, plus stress because I kinda might have quit my job yesterday... I set down a timeline for some changes I need, or else I will have to move on. I've been promised a lot of supports for going back to school but none have yet been forthcoming, so it was time to take matters into my own hands.

I definitley need to be on a bike right now, not at this desk waiting to be told my fate.

caloso 06-13-07 09:51 AM

Good for you, Buglady. I hope that, whichever way it goes, everything works out.

My ride in was very mellow. I think I reached 20mph only once, to make a yellow light. This tiime of year I never know if I'm going to get to go home at 5:30 or 9:30 so I made sure I had my light and, just as importantly, that it's charged.

Thanks for the good wishes... I'll know by lunchtime I think. It's a bit of a snakepit here today.

The bit about the lights at 9:30 made me smile. I'm far enough north that it's still full light at 9:30 - sunset isn't till 9:52pm today! - and the long twilight means that we don't need lights other than for visibility to drivers until about 11:00. I have red, white and orange blinkies but won't have to think about an actual headlight for seeing my way until late September probably. (But by November I'm going to be commuting both ways in the dark for an 8:30-4:30 job, so there's a cost to the 16.5 hour summer sunlight)

Yeah 9:08 for us, and there is still light at 10, but I'd want a headlight by then, I think. Sunrise ~5am, but lightening by 4. My lights are definitely away for the summer.

nakedsushi 06-13-07 12:15 PM

Not today, but the other day on my commute to work, I heard a catcall whistle! I thought it was the BF, who had caught up to me since he usually makes that whistle behind me, but he was nowhere to be seen, so he was probably still at home. Then I saw a guy on a road bike ride by the other side of the street (I was making a right turn) and gave me a head nod. I'd like to think he thought my bike was sexy =D

pinkrobe 06-13-07 12:55 PM

Buglady - I hope things work out.

My ride in was sans spouse, and therefore substantially faster. I think I made it in 5 minutes faster than usual, since I made all the lights.

Crash716 06-13-07 01:16 PM

kinda a rougher than normal ride...4th day of a new diet (no caffiene/sugar/wheat/dairy/animal meat)....Surprisingly easier than i thought it would be though...the hills were def harder, i felt my heart allot more than normal but my average HR was down like 10bpm? took the same amount of time...maybe no caffiene helped with the lower Bpm...

other than that just another beautiful Socal day!!

Headwind in, sidewind home. Light spritz on the road during the day. 80 and sunny on the ride home. Perfect. Got glass in front tire (lucky I noticed it at a stop light and fished it out before my 40mph descent). 5 days in a row of 20 plus days, legs are tired. Wish I could take the canal path, but I'm stuck on city roads. By the way, during descent blew past bloke on a recumbant. Felt kinda bad about going by so fast, but I got a fast roadster and he doesn't. C'est la vie.

vrkelley 06-13-07 07:38 PM

53F and blustery. "blew out for lunch"...and over-did it...took it easy on the return ride.

workingbike 06-13-07 10:52 PM

Buglady, seconded, hope it works out well. In a not-too-dissimilar situation myself. Compounded by some physical(?) bug. Still riding, but no energy.:p
