Nice half commute today - had to drop the van off at the shop to get a repair estimate.

I love my commute more everyday - the route is half on a greenway which passes through a beautiful floodplain but also has multiple jumping-off points to the grocery store, hardware store, and garage, so it's pleasant but also practical. Daily bike commuting is in my grasp!

How does your Bike To Work pledge thing work? I am doing 2 different tracking things this month, one tracks commute plus errands or anything I might have otherwise used a car for (~340 miles for May), the other only tracks trips to *the office* (not dropping kids or anything else, 208 miles for May) (and then there is just plain time on bike, ~500 miles for May)

Last year there was another alternative contest, tracking any (ground) mileage outside of single-occupancy car.

Do you have health insurance? Most health insurance companies now WANT you to do mail-order prescription services, and these services will generally send you a 6-month supply and get the prescription refilled for you automatically. The insurance co. can usually bring enough pressure to bear on your doctor to get him to go along with it. (I work for a pharmaceutical company and used to do medical insurance billing).

I haven't commuted for almost 2 weeks. It felt a little rough but I ended up shaving off 15 minutes. I guess I was pushing it. 30 mile rt via some pretty busy roads and about 1/3 mup.

It logs your miles on the bike. There's a way to denote whether the trip is for commuting, recreation/training, or errands. But as everybody on this forum knows, many trips can be two or all three of those categories.

And it wasn't really a stretch for me, that's pretty much what I would have done anyway.

great ride, though i was still slightly inebriated from last night. I did my normal 15-18mph, but man, that scenery was FLYING by!

I'm in Canada, it's a bit different here. I think this particular doctor is just really fussy. He is also a vampire because he takes every opportunity to send me for a zillion blood tests, none of which have been remotely useful.

Anyway, I've solved the problem by finding a new doctor 10 blocks from my work (bike path accessible too!). Just got the confirmation for that, yay.

I work for a company that promotes commuting on a bike (Green Travel is in). I even get paid for it as it cuts parking spaces.

So my commute to work is quality as I know there is more of benefit than keeping my heart pumping.

Snapped a chain four miles in today. Couldn't even find it after the fact. It might have flown off into a nearby canal.

One of those days, I guess.

SpotTheCat 05-31-07 06:56 PM

20 minute commute to work, 12 minutes back. Talk about a hill.

m00n 05-31-07 09:49 PM

13 days off the saddle and figured that today would be rough. It was tough, but good. Had my best times and highest MPH both directions. I'm feeling it tonight since I haven't ridden for a while. Got honked at by a lady. I smiled. :)

12 C and beautiful sunshine this morning, with a large number of baby rabbits charging around the countryside.

Makes a nice change from the 4 C on Tuesday, which required me to dig out the trousers and woolly hat.

Holy crap...that's not something I've considered (I'm still fairly new to bike commuting...got about 550 miles on my bike so far).

What kind of mileage did you have on that chain?

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I've been cycling for over forty years, and it hasn't happened to me yet. :)

JeffB502 06-01-07 04:10 AM

Oh yeah and my commute...the last half mile on the 2 lane (1 each way) 55mph stretch was interesting. I turned onto it behind a medium sized 2-axle flatbed truck. As the driver sped up to 55 the 20mph headwind got the best of her load securing skills and her load of empty boxes and pallets fell into the road. I stopped and helped clear the road...I think my high-vis vest was helpful there for stopping traffic.

After we had moved all the stuff out of the road I continued on my way. About 500 feet down the road an 18 wheeler got behind me and couldn't pass due to oncoming traffic. I was working hard into the headwind but only doing about 12mph on my hybrid. He laid on his horn several times. I gave him some friendly waves, all the while thinking I've gotta get that road bike I'm dreaming about so I can tuck down into the wind.

etothepii 06-01-07 06:18 AM

Holy Cow!!! I must have had the wind at my back! I averaged 19.8 mph on my commute this morning!!! Yee Haaa!!!!

Mr_H 06-01-07 06:20 AM

Nice, relaxing commute in (around 67). Very humid though....we desperately need rain in this area, if only to cool things down. Of course, they're talking about rain AFTER I go on vacation...grumble.

Latest commute not good

Itsjustb 06-01-07 06:47 AM

Uneventful. Nothing to see here, move along....

vtjim 06-01-07 06:54 AM

Sticky! Humidity in the 80% range. Didn't really notice it until I got to work and stopped riding. A big bad thunderstorm blew through last night so there were some damp spots and areas with a lot of green leaves on the MUP.

Hardly anyone out this morning. The odd pedestrian (they're all odd, I know :)) here and there, and 3 cyclists going the other way.

CVB 06-01-07 06:57 AM

Another nice one. I'm reliably averaging 29-30 minutes each time now (7.1 miles). Started the year at 36 minutes, and when I first tried bike commuting 2 years ago (which didn't last long due to health issues), it was 40 minutes or more.

davemarchese 06-01-07 07:17 AM

Started commuting about 2 months ago, 1 day a week. It's just a mile each way, but lots of fun. Today was beautiful. I love this!

JR97 06-01-07 07:40 AM

I shaved another 15 min. off of my commute. Normallly I ride with a co-worker which means I take a little longer of a route and ride at a more relaxed pace. It usually takes 90 minutes. Today I did the 15 miles in 60 min. on a loaded up full suspension dept. store mountain bike. Today was also my first ride with power grips. Not sure what the advantage is yet other than I can pull up on the pedals. I didn't sense that my pedaling was any more efficient, but I'm guessing I need to develope the right technique? Anywho... great commute today. Oh yeah.. forgot my work shirt, so I'm stuck in my t-shirt. *sigh*

Story of my commuting life. It's pretty messed up that I get headwinds in both directions.

Two Buck Chuck 06-01-07 08:27 AM

Nice ride in this morning except for the jaywalkers darting in front of me. I nearly took out a US Park Ranger (with gun) walking in the middle of Virginia Avenue and a clueless government bureaucrat standing in the middle of the right lane hidden behind a bus. Good thing I didn't get shot.
