I slept right through my alarm this morning - by an hour and 22 minutes. Still, I went from being in bed to being at my desk in 41 minutes, so I was only an hour late. It was sooooo beautiful on the ride in, I was thinking that I could just keep riding until the pub opened at 11:00! :)

An effortless ride in today. Broke a record on one of the longer climbs and passed over riders with ease. Could have pushed it even harder but just enjoyed the ride instead.
|
Some head wind on the way home. Around 90 degree temperature too. People at work were asking me how I was going to ride in the heat, but they don't understand that you stay fairly cool as you go.
|
For the first time in a LONG time I had someone yell at me from a truck
"GET ON THE SIDEWALK A-HOLE". Man, I wasn't even holding up traffic but there are people like that all over. Cool thing was I had to go ride to the mechanic to pick up my wife's car and passed a 4 foot snake that had been run over by a car, boy was it big. Wouldn't have seen that in a car! |

Hahahah! Speaking of rain, I got caught in a DOWNPOUR on the way home from work last week. SOAKING WET!s But man it was fun. At least it was pretty hot out so it felt great.:D And no, I didnt have any rain gear on me either. |
I had a fairly strong ride home. Working on staying in the drops and even with a decent breeze I was able to pull 17 mph for a long time.
I tend to enjoy finishing strong with a sprint to my house. About a half mile away from home I felt drained. Slowly pedaled home. It was not a bonk. Just no energy. Oh well. There is always tomorrow. |
87F "too hot" for most commuters so the return ride as pretty deserted
|
Good ride, and found this email when I got home:
Hi Scott, I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to let you know of an exciting event we are hosting for the Bike Commuter of the Year award recipients next Friday, June 8th from 12-2PM. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) in Oakland will be hosting an awards ceremony/press conference to honor you, the other 8 recipients of the Bike Commuter of the Year Award, and the Team Bike Challenge winning team. Many of the Commissioners (elected officials) from MTC will be present. We will serve lunch and good cheer. A more formal invite will follow and family members and close friends are welcome to attend. Stay tuned for more information but mark your calendar for now! Fondly, Cole Nice! I think I'll take the kids. They get a kick out of my riding. |
Commuted to summer school this morning at the university. It was raining when I left, and drizzled the whole way in. Not a bad ride. No one said anything because they all had their windows up. A 9:40 class also meant the roads were deserted at 8:30 when I left. Knee feels much better, but is still not 100%.

DAMN! Never thought My little ole' remark would attract so much attention....
I think its a combination of things.... I have HUGE Quad muscles... When I was in the Corps, I would have to get the largest size trousers on the rack, just to fit my thighs... The seamstress would then have to take the waist in 15 inches or so.... When ever anyone looses weight, I think I tend to find it.... During my wifes pregnancies I have gained more weight than she did.... I'm pushing 28, and the weight just dosent come off like it did when I was 18.... Yep, I'm a natural born fat kid..... I saw a record 4 people on bikes today!... Of course, I think 2 of em' where homeless and just ride their bikes too and from the liquor store... |
Nice Scott! :)
I left work and rode with a guy from the office, we had a pretty decent pace, him on a Giant MTB w/knobbies, me on my roadie - he later said that he had picked it up a notch - damn straight, we were going 22mph for a good while pretty consistently, and fairly quick up Kingston Road (~15/16mph) - fastest I've ever got up to the east end, that's for sure - 28 mins. Ride home was fairly rough, knees started giving me crap after I pushed strongly to keep a 24mph run until I hit red lights - man that took a toll. Good ride though, stretched like crazy once I got in and they should be OK in the morning - I'm having some latenight chili to try and help feed the muscle fix-up :) Otherwise fine, pretty slow overall due to slowing down and spinning to ease slight cramp/pain (I drank craploads of water at the next light and that eased up nicely) and just general slower speeds after the sprint and ride up. |
Moist. Light rain falling, but not enough to really soak me. I wore my rain jacket / portable sauna. I left a little later than normal. Even with the rain, I saw 3 or more bicycle tracks in the dry spots under trees. Cool. More commuters getting out in bad weather. Only saw one other cyclist heading the other way. Visibility was poor in fog.
A woman in a car stopped to let me run a stop sign. She had no stop sign. I stopped too, of course, and looked at her until she waved me through the intersection. What is it with drivers? |
Hot ride in, seems pretty humid out there already today. Left late again, so took the road route (too short) but I've more evening miles to get in, so I don't feel so bad - legs are still a little tired though.
|
One word: Humid!
I got a little bit sweaty but I suspect it has more to do with the humidity and heat more than the eBike. I bet it would be a bit sweaty as well if I walked a few blocks. |

You're listening to the morning weather report to know what to expect on your commute. You hear that there's rain in Vermont and immediately think, "vtjim's gonna have a wet commute this morning....". No, I'm not making this up. :o My commute was uneventful. |
Heavy traffic on the Mt. Vernon Trail this morning. There was some guy who kept slowing down and speeding up. I think he was just trying to show off.
|
Another beautiful day. I really wish I wasn't working today... :(
|
Not a cloud in the sky,
nor a hint of a breeze. It's days like this that give you cycling disease! |
Nice morning. Trailer Thing 2 to daycare downtown, back home, then mosey into work w/ wife, who works 1 mile closer to home than I do but on same commute path. She's getting faster, even w/ taking most of the last week off from the bike.
|
I wish I could traler the kids too and from... The streets around here are just WAY to busy... The street Behind our home is US 41... The Speed Limit is 35MPH, but people do 50-60 all the time.... The street in front has a 20mph limit. I jumped infront of an idiot who was doing well over 40mph.... I was trying to get my kids in the car... Why are people in such a rush? Is everyone incapable of leaving on-time? Heck is 15 minuets early too much to ask?

Bus again, since I had to stop in at my doctor's office (why the @#$%^&** they won't do more than 3 months of refills on a prescription, AND require me to come in in person to renew, for something I've been on for years, I have no idea), and then it took me over an hour to go 47 blocks. SO not impressed.
Oh well, I get to ferry the second New Old Bike home tonight. The ride home last night was fantastic - that old Raleigh tourer is hard to accelerate, but just like my Dad's old Chevy, once you get to cruising speed it just settles in and glides. Gorgeous, gorgeous bike :) |
SLOOOOWWW...i spent allot of time climbing today...it was rough....25 miles in 2 hours...i think i climbed over 2000' feet total on the commute in.
|
I made my Bike to Work pledge (500 miles) this morning just as I rolled into the parking structure so anything I get tonight is just gravy!
Which it is anyway. |
