Drat! I overslept. I was up way late last night. I didn't hear my alarm (assuming it went off). I drove this morning. Traffic was very light though!
|
My legs felt like lead this morning, but the computer indicates I made decent time. There were 24 other bikes out this morning. The temp was right at 60 this morning, we are expecting a high in the mid 80's for later today. A good day to be on my bike.

I finally took the step of commuting to work. What is normally a 20 minute drive only took 10 extra minutes by bike. I'm at work now and I feel great... more awake than I usually am at this time in the morning. Cleaning up once I got in (sweaty, smelly, dirty) worked out a lot better than I had guessed it would.
It's only an 8 mile ride (one way), but it's all along busy roads. I'll take some pictures soon! I never would have done it without bike forums! :) |
YEAH! I'M BACK!... After almost a month I hit the road to work spinning with a smile on my face. The temp. was 70!, no wind, and very light traffic… what a great way to start the day. Y'all have a good one!

A beautiful, unseasonably cool morning in Austin made for a very pleasant ride, except for getting stuck behind a bus for a few blocks.
I hadn't biked to work since my baby was born in early May, but I think a combo of 3 weeks of TdF coverage and discovering this forum has reenergized me. Now, the afternoon ride may not be so pleasant... |

Morning commute to work (6.5mi) was just awesome. I am usually a bit bored with this route but this morning I managed to draft a semi hauling 3 trailers until it out-accelerated me around 30mph. That's on a MTB on flat ground. I was pretty happy with myself. Then on a small hillclimb, on a bridge that goes over some tracks, I passed 3 other bike commuters, and left them in the dust. That was fun.
Some days the commute just seems to be at its worst, but this morning was one of the best. So glad I tried commuting on bike! |

My route is pretty short -- from 51st and Burnet Rd. to UT. I actually start out going in the wrong direction in order to get to North Loop and then take Guadalupe along the Intramural fields, hit 39th east to Speedway, which takes me all the way into campus. Do you take Shoal Creek to get from north to south? |
We are into a string of perfect cycling days here in Olympia, 58F at 6AM for my ride in & 84F at 3:30 PM when I go home & usually around mid 70s during my lunch time round trip. There are suddenly cyclists all over the place but most are not up to speed yet & ride slowly. Augie: [ I live in a podunk college town (Monmouth) ] My oldest son works for that college. Its really a pleasant place if you like small towns. Years ago (80s), when I was in grad school in Portland, OR there was a bicycle commuting map available that had all the streets color coded to show the best bike routes. I found it very helpful for my bike commutes to school & work. Helped me to quit using a couple of dangerous routes. I'm sure that map, or a better one, is still available if you check a local bike shop. Enjoy your Summer! Don

This is shaping up as the summer that wasn't. My tomatoes haven't started to ripen, mornings I think about long sleeves. However, today was one of my better wildlife spotting days, Doe with 2 fawns that were just losing their spots, joined by another doe, 2 pairs of turkeys, one pair crossing the road in front of me, a large raptor flying out of the woods on one side of the road into the woods on the other, and the ever present call of the Towhee. Riding was good, this evening I saw 5 cyclists, that's a lot for me.

Another gorgeous California morning. The Delta breeze finally arrived about 3am to cool the blazing valley.
My legs weighed a ton during the first mile from home but I had enough time to give myself a nice spin. I'm looking forward to the ride home if I ever get out of here. |
Playing a little catch-up here, have been busy and not posted the last few days. Worked last weekend and dealt with the usual stuffy humidity on the rides home. We had thuderstorms last night and during the day today; the ride in at 11:00 edt way unusually cool and pleasant, the ride home at 8:00 was perfect. Wo;uld have just kept going for an hour or so, but my g/f was preparing a special birthday meal for me. :D Considering I had to work, it's been a great day.

Blinded by the light, I sometimes forget how damaging the Qld sun can be on one's eyes without sunglasses (I broke my $170 pair yesterday). Still, the temperature wasn't too bad (13 degrees C), and the days are still short, so it should be OK for the ride home.

Great ride in this morning even with all the rain. I only realized it was still raining, after last night's storms, when I left the apt, but, at that point, I'm pretty well comitted. I was riding on a little faith (still without my multi tool) that my crank arms would stay attached. I removed, cleaned, and re-attached them with Loctite last night and they seem to be pretty secure. I shared drafting duties with the only other rider out there and spent the better part of 20 minutes drying off and cleaning up this morning. I've set my stuff in front of a fan in the hopes of riding home in dry clothes this afternoon.

I could not agree more! It feels more like October here than July. Cool tempatures again this morning around 56(F). Nice morning though. No rain like yesterday, traffic was pretty good. The ride home last night was ok, nothing out of the ordinary happened. |
It was a beautiful morning here. The ride in was excellent and I racked up a 19mph average speed, which is top of the line for me.
Cheers, Ed |
Today was good ride. I did not know there was a 40% chance of rain today. Maybe I'll stay dry on the way home. :o I would like to know… How many people out there must or choose to drive or ride a bus for part of their commute?
|
Great ride in today. Temps a bit on the cool side in the upper 40sF.
|
The weather was just fine for the ride. The wind wasn't bad either. I got to the healthclub across the street from my work, showered, and gave a kid a tip on how to secure his helmet to his bike so thieves don't take it. (He was just going to set it on the saddle and leave it.)
I rode across the street to my work, but had to stop to let some cars pass. I waited, then I rode on. Then I looked down and saw that I had gotten grease on my pants. No, not down by the ankle, but up near the knee. The grease came from the headset. Now I have to figure out how to get the grease out. Grrr. |
Graduated to the whole 12 mile ride home, still doing 6 + train in the morning. Next week I'll boost it to no train at all, at least 2x a week. Nice and cool in the mornings, not too bad after work. Finally found the Pas-LA basin bike trail, which also helps... way less glass.
|
Overcast skies this morning with no wind but it had burned off by 11 AM & it quickly warmed up to 85F this afternoon. Really enjoying my Summer commuting now but I need to wind up my current projects & get busy on a thorough teardown, clean & lube of a couple of my Winter bikes.
|
Nice easy 25 mph jaunt at 75 deg. no sweat hence no need to shower. Felt real good on the way home even though it was 104. Stayed off the saddle the whole way, made it in record time.
|
Still being "blinded by the light" -- interesting that we haven't had a single cloud of any description pass overhead since I broke my sunglasses. I really need to do something about this.
|
Dark ride in the morning already, I gues winter is just around the corner, hot humid ride in this morning, wet roads all the way. The day is forcasted to improve so we should be in good shape for the ride home.
|
It was cool this morning, temps in the lower 50's, but there is still no wind. I counted 24 other people out on bikes this morning.
Wonkerjaw, I take a bus home much more often than I ride. I have several options for riding distance when I take the bus (2 miles - 10 miles), it's kind of nice to pick what I want to do. Though most of our worst weather arrives in the afternoon, it was not the primary driver behind my desire to ride the bus. Fact is with a 17 mile commute each way - I just get too physically tired going both ways for days on end. |
It's hot today. No breeze either. I took it easy this morning, which was nice. I think I'll stock up on water and push on the way home.
|
I commuted to work on my bicycle for the first time this morning. A little over 11 miles one way. Temperature in the lower 60s (~15°C), sunny and clear. Funny enough, it isn't the distance or effort required, nor the afternoon ~100°F (~37°C) trip home, that has been problematic. The logistics are the hard part. Getting the proper combination of necessary food, appropriate clothing, and the supplies to clean up... well, it's like dragging a baby out of the house. There is no such thing as just popping out for a quick errand when you have a baby, and the same thing goes for bike commuting. I'm just glad I had the luck to read stories and tips on bikeforums.net first. :)
I keep glancing over and checking out the surreal sight of the Specialized next to me in my cubicle. Pretty dang cool. :) |
Congrats daeley on your first commute! After a while, you will be able to get up late, and still be to work on time with all the goodies you need for your work day. It becomes second nature.
Nice and cool ride in this morning. Temps in the 40's (F) again. Crisp enough to put on a wind jacket. The bike wouldn't shift into the big chain ring this morning. I'll have to look at that when I get home. The stuck link is sticking again also. More TLC is in order. Bob |
I LOVE this. Only my 2nd commute, and I am thoroughly addicted. I must be particularly endorphin-susceptible or something, because when I got to school today my friends thought I was high. I had just ridden 15 miles to get there, so I guess I was a little bit. Biking just makes me HAPPY. It was 90 degrees when I rode home, and I have some killer hills in the mix, and I was still singing all the way. Especially when I passed a guy (in a red convertible) who had earlier cut me off - he was stuck in traffic as I cruised by. :D Oh, so lovely.
