Saturday and I'm at work. How crap is that? And the last few days thunderstorm have washed so much debris into the tracks that I get a blow out on the way - shredded the rear tyre. Luckily I keep a spare folding tyre in my bag so I fitted that and detoured by my LBS to get a new spare.
Cold wind but lovely sunshine and a great way to sweat out last night's overindulgence. By the time I got here I was smiling again. |
For the first time, I'm celebrating not commuting. Work has been monstrous the past 3 weeks. Some days I've gone home after a 12 hour day without lunch or even a drink before I ride home (don't stop to take a drink, get out there while you can mode). It has been solid night every week. 3 weeks and my legs are putty, cramps are almost continuous. I have 2 days to recover. I won't be on my bike this week-end, sleep and rehydration are my main priorities. I will of course go in to pick up my custom Baileyworks messenger bag at Broadway Bicycle School and take a look at the expanded Harris Cyclery store. OT might allow some indulgence.

Friday's ride started at 55F no wind, went pretty quick for not riding much. Going home was about 75F again with a light South wind. Not much of a problem seeing as I'm going nearly due East on the way in & due West home. Did have to push the ride home because I pick up my children right after work (I'm a single dad). Looking forward to Monday.

A rather miserable ride in this Monday morning - grey skies, rain, wind. We were expecting this weather yesterday, so at least I got the opportunity of a comfortable dry sunny ride at the weekend!
Cheers, Ed |
I finally nailed it, one hour from my door to the company grounds. This has been a goal of mine since I first started commuting earlier this year. I know there is still room for improvement and have already adjusted the goals, but it is sweet to have nailed this one.
The temps were in the high 50's and there was a slight tail wind. There were 14 others out on bikes this morning. |
There was a nice stiff headwind coming into work this morning. I took it kinda easy as I had a really good time this weekend and I'm still feeling the effects of a really drunk Friday night. I imagine I'll feel right as rain tomorrow. Anyhow, the smell of either Coke or Rum makes me want to puke right now.

After a week on Sandy Island, in Lake Winnipesaukee, NH (where all transportation is either walking or boat, I am back again, pulling my daughter in her trailer. It felt pretty good, as did the prospect of going trailer-free when school starts again in a bit over a week.
Bright sunshine, cool temperatures, nice. Paul |
Friday the forecast called for our sunny Summer weather to end by Saturday night so I rode a lot Friday & again Saturday morning. The rain began at 2:30 PM on Saturday which was a motivator for me to get busy on Winter prep Sunday afternoon. I patched the flat on one bike, mounted a new front tire. Then I cleaned & adjusted another backup. Rode them both today & it was sunny with broken clouds early changing to very heavy, dark clouds by 3:30 in the afternoon. Made it home without rain & it has been alternately sunny & then threatening rain again. looks like we will have a week of showers but I'm ready for it. Don

Congrats to RicardoJM!!
Today started with a 15mph head wind with temp at 64 & cloudy, this afternoon was the same except it was more to my right. Last Friday night we saw record low temps & a buddy who was out camping had frost already. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr |
No rain, no wind and no cold on a late "winter" commute today (well, in truth Spring started about 6 weeks earlier). 7am temperature of 16 degrees C, which is probably a little warmer than I'd like anyway.
|
The summer we've been waiting for finally arrived this week. Riding has been great, the humidity low, clear skys and no wind on both ends of the commute, it's forcasted to be like this for the rest of the week. Don't get too attached though, studded tires are just around the corner.

Good ride in today. Supposed to be a hot week ahead with high humidity. Going to be sweating alot.
|
Warm evening commute tonight, ran into an old friend that I haven't seen in ages, so I had some pleasant company on the way back. 20 degrees C on the ride home, and getting a little humid. Had to head off again 30 minutes later to attend a meeting, similar temperatures. The ride back from that was just beautiful, even though I had to dodge a brawl in Surfers Paradise.
|
I had a nice 25km/h tailwind coming in this morning. Which I was thankful for since last night was laundry day and I slugged all my clothes into work for the next several days. Should be a hard ride home though if the wind direction doesn't change.
|
Another unseasonably cool morning (what happened to summer?) but I was comfortable with arm-warmers. Had to take a fairly direct route to work because I overslept from staying up too late watching the Olympics, even though I really don't care anything about gymnastics. (You can tell they're real athletes from all the glitter and mascara they wear....)
Keeping in mind another thread, I keep looking for female commuters. I nearly literally ran into one this morning since she was going the wrong way in the bikelane along Freeport Avenue. No helmet either. I hope she has her organ donation card filled out. |
ROCKET MAN!
OK, perhaps not. But that is how it felt to be on the commute this morning with a >30MPH/48KPH tailwind! The windows have been rattling from the wind all day. Looks like I will get to be BIKE SLUG on the way home into that headwind. EDIT: Forgot to mention we had a record 1.37 inches of rain yesterday! The high temperature didn't even make out of the mid 50s! |

Two punctures on the way in. Not happy, changing tubes in the pouring rain. Watching the swallows at play over the fields on the way home made up for it. |

Another hot, humid afternoon commute ahead of me, 89 F / 32 C, 70% humidity. But, 10 - 15 MPH tailwind, yah !
|
Nice easy 8 miles to work through Beverly Hills. 70 and sunny.
|
This morning's ride was 64F, 90% humidity with a light 5mph breeze in my face, nice.
Most mornings I see an older couple out for thier walk, they are friends of my parents, in thier early eighties I think. So I stopped and introduced myself because they were on a side road without traffic. Boy were they sharp as tacs! They remembered my name right away & I hadn't seen them since I was a kid ( I'll be 40 this year)! Really nice to stop & chat for a few minutes. I sure hope I'm still kickin' like them when I get to that age. The ride home was nice too, the road was wet from a little rain but was dry by the time I got half way, then it sprinkled a little to finish out the ride, temp is 72F with a light south wind on my left shoulder. Think I'll skip tommorrow & ride Thursday & Friday. I 'll have to work Saturday so maybe I'll ride five days this week. I've been keeping my average speed down until I get my legs back so I shouldn't be too beat for Sat. |
The antlers on the young buck I've been watching this summer are just starting to develop 4 points, it will be interesting to see how big a rack he will develop. If he is the deer I think he is, he will be going into his 2nd rut soon. The turkeys have been lying low the past week, maybe they have finally gleaned the field enough that they have moved on. It is time for me to make the switch from the summer "be seen" lights to the winter "seeing" lights. I hate all the wires & switches, but I hate potholes more. Good to see everyone is having a good season.

Had a wheelsucker on my tail this morning. Usual deal, unannounced, tailgating, and unable to ride at my pace if he got on the front. I was tempted to put on a sprint and drop him, but I find that more difficult on flat roads (need an upward incline to gain any advantage here). He still croaked out "thanks" when he pulled off, but I do wish people like that would at least ask first. Maybe I should have fired off a few snot rockets.
|
Rainy & mid 60s today. Showers were broken up by intermittent downpours so I got pretty wet this morning, felt strange to have booties on again but at least my feet were dry. Looks like we'll have rainy weather all week & I'm pretty pleased I was able to get a couple rain bikes into rideable shape on Sunday.
|
It was dry and calm this morning, but I felt really leaden on the ride. Average speed was about 1mph down on the usual. Just one of those days I suppose.
Cheers, Ed |
Decent ride this morning. 77 deg and sprinkling. VERY humid in KCMO right now. It wasn't supposed to rain until aound 8 this morning. Of course, it started raining on my commute!. I had to stop and put rain covers on. I'm one of the unfortunates that use a laptop at work. I had to cover that up! One thing I never understand. Why would someone be on the road (cyclist or runner) and NOT be reflective? I almost hit a runner this morning. Black shorts, dark shirt. I didn't see him (her) until I was right there! I like my "Christmas Tree" looking bike. Head light, tail light, reflective tape, leg bands. It makes me feel safe. All in all...a good ride. -JH

Nice stiff tailwind again this morning. Made getting into work a breeze (no pun intended). I not sure if I prefer a tailwind or headwind coming into work. I think I would rather get home quicker as opposed to flying into work in the mornings. :p
|
Starting to actually feel like August here. High humidity and warmer temps. Ride home last night was pretty good, traffic was on the heavy side but not to bad.
Got a flat in my rear tire this morning that sucked. Besides that nothing bad happened. |
