Good ride in today, although it's been hot. I've been back to riding my road bike after using my Raleigh Twenty for a week. The Twenty's fun, but there's no doubt the road bike's faster.

acroy 08-03-07 08:24 AM

warm, muggy, very uncomfortable. icky. sweat dripping down my arms onto my palms & grips.
Otherwise, a very nice ride. Lite traffic at 6:30am! ;)

tovarich 08-03-07 08:42 AM

My commute this morning was pretty blah. I've had to shift my usual river crossing from the beautiful ped/bike only Stone Arch Bridge (closed for emergency vehicle use due to the 35w bridge collapse) to the extremely busy 3rd Avenue bridge where I got buzzed by a black VW bug. Then going through a neighborhood about 1000 ft from the office a railroad crossing had a train just sitting on the tracks not moving, prompting another detour down a really busy street.

However, the weather today is fantastic. The dew point is really low for once, temp is in the mid 70s, and there isn't a cloud in the sky.

pinkrobe 08-03-07 09:00 AM

No dog bites, and not much traffic either. Everyone is taking today off in advance of the long weekend...

aliensporebomb 08-03-07 09:03 AM

Being that I have a job where I'm carrying 40-50 pounds of computer crap to
different offices and am in a different office every day and also might have to
jump out to a different office at any given time I've not been commuting much.

But, what happened is my wife recently got a commute worthy road bike and
since she wanted to ride in today I figured I'd go with her halfway and then
turn around and head home and get ready for work.

So the ride in was fairly leisurely from Bloomington (MN) north on Penn to
Lake Harriet then she continued north to her work, I split off and sped up
around the lake and headed south to home.

It's been at least two years since I've been able to actually commute and
I miss it. Maybe if I find a different job downtown I can get back to that.

Lots of fun, I hope my wife gets into it actually. She called me and was
quite excited about getting to work under her own power. For me it was
a nice 15 miles or so.

devildogmech 08-03-07 09:05 AM

Must be nice... My wife thinks I'm nuts :D

Flimflam 08-03-07 09:10 AM

My ex. didn't have any affection for the bike, despite my trying :)

I found and bought a Bianchi last night (see the C&V forum for pics), in somewhat rough shape and it's an old steel road frame, but I'm going to make this my fixie project. All kinds of excited about that :D

No dog bites for me, rode in on street level for a whopping 3 miles of sprint-ish action, warmed up behind a guy hauling ass on an MTB (17mph was respectable, he had bigass knobbies on too) and took the lead after - he was with me the whole ride with various boom/busts with lights (hit 28mph but lights meant I had to keep stopping), I pulled over to let him come by as I was slowing for my office turn off - wished him a good ride :)

HardyWeinberg 08-03-07 10:19 AM

Nice ride. 25 min mile to start off (well, 8 minute .3 mile) w/ 6 yr old on scooter to daycamp, then turn around and zip to work. No encounters of note.

ModoVincere 08-03-07 10:32 AM

This mornings commute was a nice one. Saw one of my freinds who was out for a jog, so I slowed down and coasted alongside for a few minutes while we chatted. Then we went our separate ways and I took it pretty easy coming in. 8 miles in 40 minutes with about 1 mile of it at 6 1/2 or so mph. Really could have ridden twice that distance, but work was calling.

caloso 08-03-07 10:33 AM

Cool and mellow.

bikedaddy 08-03-07 12:19 PM

2-5 inches of rain fell in the span of a couple hours last night. Part of the path was flooded but I went through anyway (not moving and not deep). Good fun but now I have wet shoes all day.

velocycling 08-03-07 12:29 PM

Thought about Caloso on last night's commute home. 20+ miles through surburbia and not once did my foot touch the ground. It was a first.

Chuck G 08-03-07 01:14 PM

The ride this morning was great, I averaged 16.9mph, a new personal best.

Itsjustb 08-03-07 01:45 PM

Quiet commute this morning--pretty typical for a Friday. I think a lot of folks here in the Triangle work from home on Fridays, as the traffic is always lighter.

Ain't it cool?

Lamplight 08-03-07 03:33 PM

Nothing special this morning, but yesterday on my way home I saw about 15 wild turkeys, most of which were youngsters. :)

madfiNch 08-03-07 07:59 PM

My ride home was awesome because I stopped at the LBS to pick up my new (to me) Bridgestone after its tune-up!! Yay! Pics tomorrow in the sticky. It's beautiful!! :D

I am finally going to put my Garmin Edge 305 to work on my commute starting tomorrow morning! I bought it last August and have finally read the instruction manual...;^)

This will be my first morning commute. 27 miles one way...I'll leave around 5:30am and hopefully have some decent daylight after the first half hour.

vtjim 08-06-07 06:28 AM

Wet! Soaking rain coupled with a blustery 20MPH headwind. Only saw one cyclist. I passed her and said, "Nice day, huh?" :) She agreed.

ModoVincere 08-06-07 06:58 AM

Its Monday...commute sucked.
Actually the riding itself wasn't too bad, its just that 5 minutes into the ride, my FD decides to freeze up and nothing, I mean nothing, is going to make it move. So my old 10spd was a low geared 3spd for almost the entire commute. Still made the 8 miles in about 38 minutes, up from my normal 30 minutes, but now I gotta spend money on a new FD. I think I'll get a new RD as well, the old one probably doesn't have too much left in it.

mhifoe 08-06-07 07:21 AM

Nice sunny ride in with temperatures at about 18C.

I treated myself to a nice pair of bib shorts on Saturday (Giordana Tenax) which are stunning.
It's like sitting on a cloud, and they wick away sweat much better than my other shorts.

timthorn 08-06-07 08:28 AM

Friday was a lovely holiday that I road into work out of habit and took a prolonged trip home that included a little accident. But then today, after dropping my sis-in=laws car off at the repair shop, I commuted into work and had nothing but an annoying head wind. I really dislike having to petal downhill just to maintain 20 mph. The only perk will be tonight with that same wonderfull tail wind.

tarwheel 08-06-07 08:35 AM

Hot week ahead in NC, the hottest of this summer, which has been much hotter than average. Forecasted highs are expected to be near 100 or hotter all week, with our ever present humidity. It was already 77 degrees when I got up this morning around 6 a.m., and I was drenched with sweat by the time I got to work. On top of the heat, we've got Code Orange alerts for air quality.

Fortunately, I'll be carpooling a couple of days this week, but that still leaves 3 days of riding in the heat. I'll just take it slow and easy. That's about all you can do when it's this hot. I know it's a cliche, but it's the humidity that really makes it bad.

Quickbeam 08-06-07 09:17 AM

Haven't posted to this thread in a long time. Commuting has been great here in Minnesota this summer. Very little rain which is great for the commute but we could use some for other reasons.

One thing that did happen earlier this summer, I broke the frame on the single-speed (really two speed) that I normally commute on. So until the replacement frame arrives, I'm riding my geared bike.

Cool and overcast. I rode the race bike in; I'm going to drop it off at the LBS at noon and see if they can figure out what the deal is with the increasingly loud creaking in the front end. I have a feeling the headset is giving out but that diagnosis is above my mechanical abilities.

I didn't bother with the shoes this morning. You can actually ride the Ultegra pedals like platforms. They're a bit slippery but no biggie. Still, it's weird to pull away from a stop and have to remember to keep your upstroke foot on the pedal.

pluc 08-06-07 10:45 AM

No commute today! I'm off for 2 weeks! :D

HardyWeinberg 08-06-07 11:42 AM

Smokin'! 17mph for 42 min! I never do that. Heavy panniers today too.

It rained 1 inch early this morning. We've had a drought of sorts around here. The ground was still watery. Took the opportunity to commute in my new fuji crosstown with fenders to try them out. The sun started to evaporate the water as I left so I didn't get a honest to goodness test. Otherwise, they worked great. Maybe some other day:(

deanack 08-06-07 01:38 PM

I did my first commute today with a new rack. Topeak Exp. w diskbrakes. That was better than the fannie pack. I used my old cannondale Rack bag. 10 miles thru steamie air this morning.

vrkelley 08-06-07 02:06 PM

Still no riding...knee is recovering nicely since I switched to a running shoe. More PT this week.
