Good ride today. Rode with cyclometer set to metric. It's funny to see 20 kowing full well I'm only going about 12mph or so

Beautiful evening for a ride tonight. Full moon, clear sky, high 40's, no wind, what more could a girl wish for? I seemed to have more energy than usual this morning and evening on my rides too. Not quite sure why... Maybe the cooler temps are easier on the lungs?

Alphie 10-27-04 07:42 PM

"how could I possibly have bonked on a six mile ride when I'd had a latte and a cookie an hour before I started"

Sounds to me as though the latte and cookie could have caused you to crash. When you eat sugary foods it is usually a good idea to either start working out immediately thereafter or wait a couple of hours for the food to digest before heading out. Or eat foods naturally high in fructose that will give you a steady supply of energy without a "whiplash" effect.

Tonight was a Harvest Moon: low in the atmosphere and orange in color.

spidercyclist 10-27-04 10:46 PM

Nice ride in to work and home . nice moon tonite .
Rode the ss today . Have a nice day .

Traffic traffic traffic, rain rain rain. First three bad, last three good. I love riding in the rain. Though my brand new "waterproof-and-breathable" winter gloves let in so much water I could have let orphaned fish live in them til they found somewhere else to stay.

Now you've done it. You had to mention high 40's, and look what happened this morning! :D

Nice and cold! Mid-to-upper 20s on the trail this morning. The Winooski bridge was one long frosted-over deck of wood. Took it slow (road bike) and straight. No problems.

Terrific moonset before the sun started coming up. Going down over the Adirondacks and reflecting on Lake Champlain. If only I had a camera with me...

I'm having a bad patch at the moment. On Tuesday night I broke the chain on no.1 bike, last night the rear light attached to my bike bounced out of the bracket and suffered a severely cracked casing (the second light problem in a week). Fortunately it is still operational and I had the red blinky on my backpack anyway. Looks as if I shall be making a trip to the bike shop on Saturday...

Cheers,

Ed

Nice ride, but the temp (68°F) and humidity (heat index 75°) are getting old. I'll be happier when it is a bit cooler in the morning. Happy Trails!

BenyBen 10-28-04 07:53 AM

Very nice sunny morning with 32F. Still my my shoes and gloves prove to be defficient, but I'm buying them this weekend, so no worries.

2nd day that I have to ride my bike with the trailer today. I won a couple of computers/servers and a 17inch screen in a charity auction @ work, to get rid of the old hardware. can't all fit in one trip. Last night I was comming back with 70lbs in my trailer, in the dark with my rear blinker and front light. Felt like I was riding a REAL SUV. :)

robncindi 10-28-04 11:45 AM

Full moon must have been affecting people yesterday! I nearly got creamed by three cars in a row driving in the bike lane...one was a cop, MORONS! Weather is hotter than hell still, 90% humidity and 85F! Wish it would cool down!

I went out to hop on my bike and there was a slight drizzle so I focused on that 40%. While I was loading my bike it started raining so I put my rain jacket on and when I started down the road the rain increased... but I stayed focused on that 40%! Mostly because I mounted my Nokians and fenders and wanted to give them a trial run.

1 1/2 miles into my commute the rain started coming down in sheets, the wind picked up and the lightning let loose! To #*!! with that 40%! I turned around, took a hot shower and drove to work!

Yeah I got rained on a bit this morning myself (okay, torrential downpour) and without fenders or rain gear too. It's above 50, so I don't mind getting wet. It looks like there is a chance for a dry commute home tonight though even though they're saying 68% chance of rain tonight. Who are they kidding with 68%, why not 69%. Dorks. Anyway, stay dry, and if you can't stay dry, stay warm.

Hello. This is my first post on this forum. Since I rode my bike to work today, I thought that I'd post to let everyone know how it went. Weather conditions were 48F and dark. It was dry and that is all I ask these days. There is about a 1 mile stretch of my commute that is undergoing some serious road construction and each day I anticipate it being smooth and paved. That road crew continues to let me down. They are taking their sweet time with it, but I guess it will be that much sweeter when they finally get it done. This seems to be a good forum and it is nice to see so many people that are so into commuting by bicycle.

:: carefully puts down candycorn ::

If I have to wait a couple of hours after sugary foods before I ride, I might as well hang up my bike now! :)

But, no, it's good advice - I just wasn't thinking about it. Thanks, Alphie!

Today's morning ride was nice - bright, sunny, warmish; headwind, but not too bad. Everything was sunny and beautiful when I entered my building for work, but by the time I made it up to the 16th floor Lake Michigan had turned into Lake Mordor. The wind will be with me on the way home tonight, and the padded tights I ordered showed up today, so I'm going to enjoy the hell out of the evening ride in about an hour.

Hullo Nate.

Ride home was heaven. Quiet roads, not a breath of wind and a major pig-out from the choclit vending machine gave me oodles of energy. For the first time in a while my Polar told me to cool it before my legs started screaming at me.

Nice.

super-douper 10-28-04 04:36 PM

lunchtime bike errands today. Seems like every week it gets easier and easier to ride my bike places I used to think I needed a car.

today is a great day to ride, 60F. can't beat it!

Seanholio 10-28-04 04:50 PM

COLD COLD COLD

I knew it was cold when I opened the garage door. I knew more intimately how cold it was when I was doing 20 and my toes were going numb.

I knew the cold in the marrow of my bones when my manager had a 2 hour meeting immediately after I got to work, and I was unable to escape the air conditioning vent in my cube, while wearing sweaty lycra.

This morning's shower makes me wonder if I should go to confessional. 15 minutes just enjoying hot water. Is that a sin?

ollo_ollo 10-28-04 06:07 PM

Patchy fog & 37F @ 6AM today, just wore my work clothes with a heavy wool sweater & had a nice ride in to work. It was 50F when I left work early for a doctor's appointment.

Unsettled weather in the Atl area today. Nice and warm though. Afternoon showers that cleared in time for the trip home. Beautiful "atmospheric" foggy nights and mornings the last few days.

spidercyclist 10-28-04 10:32 PM

Nice ride to work & home . But had someone on a motorcycle hit my bike . This the second time this has happen to one of my bikes .There is no damage that i can see. Had my bike push about two feet on the bike rack.
Good thing I hade a long rope chain on my bike .I talk to the parking deck people .The dude at the parking deck said he did not see any thing . But may be his boss did . So i will see him when I get to work . So I see people on motorcycle can not drive ether,Just like people in cars .Have a nice day .

Finally! A sub-freezing commute! At least according to our house thermometer. We're in the woods and close to the lake so it reads warmer than most. 30.6F Airport temps were in the high 20s.

I'm thinking my full-length lycra tights aren't going to cut it if it gets much colder. My legs were beginning to feel it. I have lots of polar fleece I can wear.

Clocks get turned back on Sunday, so that means morning commutes will be light again, but the afternoon commutes are going to start getting dark.

Map tester 10-29-04 06:53 AM

Foggy and warm, 66°F. Rode home last night in a light rain, learned by experience that any type of jacket in these temps is too much, got wetter from sweat than from rain. Rode up on a crash between two minivans last night and saw a fender bender between a car and Marta bus this morning. Glad to be on a bike! Yesterday morning I passed a cop asleep in his patrol car. Thought about stopping and waking him up, but then decided startling a cop might not be a wise thing...

funbun 10-29-04 07:13 AM

My neck is giving me pains today. I'm gonna drive. Can't wait to get my bent!

Wulfheir 10-29-04 07:15 AM

i rode into work hungover this morning. time will tell if the bike ride will help my condition, or worsen it. it definately took me a little longer to get to the office this morning.

A cool -4C this morning. Had the slicks on this morning. One thing I forgot about Fall riding is how slick roads can get with the frost. Did not fall or anything but if you were not careful you could easily lose control. Almost broke 400km for the first time for the month just commuting. Amazing how fast 20Km every work day adds up!

Have a great day everyone!

Zin 10-29-04 10:06 AM

24F/-4.4C at my place this morning. I could feel the temperature drop as I descended into the river bottom. There was a bit of frost on everything including the roadway for a fair distance. The 23C race slicks had no problem cutting through.

The sky was clear. Bright full moon blazing in the sky. Its light was dancing off of the ice crystals in the frost. It was one of those beautiful scenes that make you glad your not afraid to cycle in the cold.

bikemanpdx 10-29-04 11:00 AM

I hate that I have TO commute today! This is the ideal weather to ride… breezy with morning rains, clearing to 74+ degrees with leaves blowing all over the roads and the majority of leaves and colours remaining on the trees. Air cleaned from four days of West coast weather. T-shirt, bike shorts, sandals and helmet is all. Three airforce jets flew by on the way to work stopping both cars and cyclists alike to gawk upward… probably another visit from Presidential candidates or their entourage. Dicaprio was spotted having coffee downtown Des Moines yesterday by a cyclist. A Gilbert Grape fan named Betsy at La Mie Bakery and Restaurant is rumoured to be renaming coffee drinks "Leonardo DiCappuccino"… anyway I feel sick… better call out ill and hit the roads… weather won't be like this forever! Have a good return ride folks, and a great Beggar's night / Halloween / Dias de los Muertos / Election night and Guy Fawkes Day!

KrisPistofferson 10-29-04 11:09 AM

C'mon Bikeman, I used to live in Des Moines and it has some of the most beautiful women of any city I've been to. You were looking at the wrong scenery.
