Good ride to and from work today. A little bit on the cold side. It was about 5 F. Rode the SS today. In all, still a good ride. Have a good night.

Becca 01-18-05 01:36 AM

This evening's ride was chilly, but I dressed appropriately and stayed roasty-toasty. Tomorrow (now today's) morning ride is going to be one worth paying attention to: a low of 11-16F, with winds at 5-10mph. I'll be riding at 10-15mph, so my windchills will range from -10F to -28F.

clevernamehere 01-18-05 06:47 AM

-3c this morning. Rain/freezing rain. VERY slippery! Thankful for whats left of my studs.
Snow & -14 this afternoon (I can hear the autobody guys snickering now!)

One of the coldest of the season. Perspiration was wicking out of my gloves and fleece bottoms and forming an amusing layer of frost.

Saw one deer.

"FrozenBike", we're in that cold that went over you earlier. Supposed to get even colder! Nice avatar. :)

Temps are in F...

PaulH 01-18-05 07:33 AM

I squirted WD-40 into my shifter cable housing last night and left the bike to dry, upside down, indoors. It worked -- all the moisture from last week's flooding was gone, and I got to enjoy all gears on a brisk (13 F / -10 C) morning.

The news said it 4f when I left the house, but as I rode by the bank,
their thermo read -1f. It was colder yesterday. I must remember that weathermen are for entertainment purposes only. The ride was good, slight headwind, couldn't tell what the equivalent wind chill was, but I was overdressed up top. Rode the SS again, but today thought about riding the Diamond back Full Susp. next time it snows. The wind makes me miss gears some days...

balto charlie 01-18-05 08:16 AM

tad nippy 11F/-11C. Still can't compete with canucks....nor do I want to. I dressed with all I owned and it was enough. Like Paul I was worried about cables, gears and hub freezing after riding in last weeks downpour. My bike spent the weekend in it's train station bike box and performed flawlessly. I was surprised especially with the hub.

SaskCyclist 01-18-05 08:34 AM

Excellent ride today.....Temp is 1C and light rain. I almost forgot what to wear when it is around zero.

nick burns 01-18-05 08:48 AM

15 F & clear. Freewheel froze up on me halfway though the ride. Forgot that it was wet out on the last commute & then temps plummeted. Had to stop and warm it up in my hands & blowing on it. It took a few minutes but it worked. I pretended to ride a fixy for the last couple of miles so that I wouldn't lose pawl engagement again. Hopefully it'll be ok for the ride home. Gotta remember to lube/flush it tonight.

billh 01-18-05 09:31 AM

It was just fine, thanks for asking. 10F, 2F windchill. No problem. After 40 min my toes were cold but nothing a nice warm shower couldn't fix. All I had on was wool socks and well ventilated summer cycling shoes (me = idiot). Happy as a frickin clam. I'm banking on 30's tonight and 40's tomorrow. God I love St Louis. If you don't like the weather, stick around for a few days, it'll change.

bradw 01-18-05 09:33 AM

10F, 2F with windchill.

Sluggish shifting

Cold extremities

Very little ice

Not a bad ride

caloso 01-18-05 10:56 AM

Nearly got killed this morning because I violated one of the cardinal rules of vehicular cycling. I didn't take the lane when I needed to and when I approached a line of cars, I swung into the flow of traffic, nearly under the bumper of a Chevy Avalanche.

I cursed the Avalanche driver, but in hindsight, I realize that was just poor bike riding on my part.

Hope I have a safer ride home.

No commute yesterday due to the MLK holiday. Good thing as we got hosed all day by wind & torrential rains, sometimes 1" per hour! Today, it was an unseasonably warm 55F at 6 AM with light wind & only intermittent heavy rain. I rode in to work between downpours. At my commute back home again at lunchtime there were even a few sun breaks, only had to contend with wet streets & standing water in a few places. Don

Today was -22F with the windchill, -2F without. I'd never ridden in weather that cold, and I wasn't prepared. The coldest I've ridden in is about 3 degrees, but with no wind. My car was towed and I had no choice but to ride. This would be the first day I'd ever even think of chickening out.

I actually overdressed, but that was better than the alternative. Halfway through my 5 miles into work, the real fear of frostbite kicked in. I had my Subzeros on, liners inside, but the cold was still really getting to my fingers. The only thing that really bothered me was my fingers, everything else was warm enough where I broke into a really mean sweat.

A few more minutes in, something else bothered me. Something ELSE felt a little tingly, and not in a good way. Ok, now I gotta fly. I couldn't tell if it was saddle numbness or the cold, and I really didn't want to stop to find out. The people on the way may have wondered what I was up to anyway.

On the last 3/4's of my ride I really wish I hadn't left my goggles at work. It was cold enough to keep my tear ducts frozen shut. Instead of my usual runny nose, when I'd blink, my eyelashes would stick.

I took the goggles home with me tonight.

Cold & windy Today on the way to work and home.
But road the ss so not a bad ride .
Have a good nite

-15, light snow falling on streets covered in ice from yesterday's freezing rain.

Fell once on a straight streatch. I got a little over-confident & got up to about 24km/h.... front tire snagged a bit of a rut with the rut or something. I felt it coming so it was a semi-controlled fall. My cheep Innova studs are officially worn out. I really don't think they were doing anything. I think I'll order the re-studding kit for now & get a pair of Nokians for next winter.

PaulH 01-19-05 07:33 AM

Up to 19 F / -8 C here, and it really feels warm by comparison. As we walked to the school bus stop, my six year old daughter agreed that it seemed much less cold than before. In fact, halfway through the ride to work, I unzipped my coat and let the wind cool me down.

Last commute for a while -- we leave tonight to ski Tremblant, in Canada. Much cooler there.

felt a lot warmer but still very cold. didn't check the temps , still way below freezing

jerrryhazard 01-19-05 08:16 AM

19f this morning, and about 1.5 inches of new white stuff on ground. Rode in the cars tire trails most of the way, but glad I had the studded tire up front and occasional encounters with buried ice tried to deck me. Thinking of switching to a 16 cog in the back for snow, the 15 was a little tough towards the end today. Fun and quitet ride in, love how the bike sounds on the snow.

Not at all! Please, keep it. I was serious. We look like kindred spirits. :D

To my shock and horror, it was ABOVE ZERO this morning. 2F degrees. But I can't win: I had a 10-15MPH headwind. Brutal. I pushed through it though.

SaskCyclist 01-19-05 08:41 AM

Definitely not the most enjoyable commute. Between the falling ice pellets driven by a 40K wind and the loose snow from the fresh 2 cm overnight combined with warmer temperatures at times I wished I had taken the bus. The funny part is that I actually prefer -25C to -5C because at least the snow is hard packed.

Tomorrow will be better.

madhouse 01-19-05 09:06 AM

18F with 20mph quartered winds. When going into the wind after ½ mile my balaclava froze to my beard! I only travel 3 miles in that direction, the remaining was with the wind mostly at my back. I made good time this morning… which was good because I left 15 minutes late.

I hope accuweather is correct and that wind will die down before the commute home!

caloso 01-19-05 10:20 AM

Good lord, you are cold weather studs, you Warriors of the Frozen Tundra. I doff my helmet to you all.

Here in the capital of the Golden State, it's not golden but gray. Gray, gray, gray. My Cygo-Lite died this week and I've got the cheapie LED light on until I get the bright one fixed or replaced.

rainedon 01-19-05 10:23 AM

In Portland we went from the 20's F and an ice storm that pretty much shut down the city last weekend, to a high of 66 F yesterday. I rode in this morning at 5:30 am wearing a thin long sleeve jersey and I was sweating like crazy. Crazy weather.

Freakin' cold here! It started to snow as I was approaching campus. I'm guessing there will be about 3 inches on the ground when I head home this evening.

billh 01-19-05 11:06 AM

The only thing that got me out of bed this morning was my bike commute . . . how bout THAT! Yes, my life is that boring. :)

Tonights commute is gonna suck. I'm switching to knobbies. It will help a little but still gonna suck

dogbro 01-19-05 04:21 PM

35 degrees F. No wind. Balmy by some standards I'm sure. My wife left at the same time in car. I passed her about a mile later in traffic. I love passing cars stuck in traffic. Makes my day.

motorhommmer 01-19-05 05:27 PM

Its the old endorphins - bit of an addiction this cycling.
