Well, we got a little snow yesterday, fortunately not enough to make the homeward journey difficult on 23mm tires. There are rumours of more today, so I fired up my Wife's Fuji folding ATB. Woah that is a heavy bike, but I'm glad of the wide tires.
Cheers, Ed |
very lots of frozen ices this morning. neighborhood scary. ka-chunk-ka-chunk...look out! but then it got better, the usual grime and splatter. i have to admit, it's getting better...

I sure can't whine about the weather here. It seems like it has been about -15C in am warming up to -10 in the pm for about the last month. Very little wind and usually sunny. These temperatures and conditions make for a very enjoyable commute. I know exactly what to wear; the roads and paths have stayed clear. All around it has been a good month of commuting so far. I guess that makes up for the crappy conditions in January. I wonder what March will bring. In like a lamb out like a lion or vice versa? I can't wait to get on my new bike once it dries up.
Have a great day! |
I'm so glad you asked, just when I think no one cares, you ask how my commute went . . . well, I've been spinning in my 21 cog for the past two days because my rear der cable broke on a leisure ride on Sun and I'm too lazy to fix it. I unhooked my front der and tied up the rear in the 21. Good enough to get me up the hills but can't really go too fast otherwise. Nice. Relaxing. No pressure to "go fast".
|
A number of issues combined to make me drive in today and the weather was just gorgeous! Driving in on a route that I normally ride, I passed a girl on a fixie and I just wanted to kick myself.
I'll make up for it tomorrow, I promise. |
Don't know how we did it, but all the rain that usually drowns us in Oregon has gone to California. Clear skies and 38F degrees this morning...supposed to be 60F degrees by the ride home. Almost makes the commute too easy!
|
terrible, I broke my left/front Shimano 105 STI shifter trying to get into the third chainring. Now I can only use the front two! Does anyone want to split a new pair of shifters? How can one get an individual shifter that costs close to half the price of the pair?

First day I was to ride to work, after 2 days off. We had quite a bit of rain the last 1 1/2 days. I rode to the greenway to take my usual route, there appeared to be a river at least 3 feet deep running across the entrance to the trail. Ugh. So I rode back to my place and took the car in. I would have been late to work otherwise. Too bad, it was a beautiful day for the commute in.
|
Good ride to work today. The road and the railbed were muddy. but I got to ride the ss with the studded tires.
So the ride was real good today. Think Spring! |
24F, clear & dry at 6 AM today & I didn't feel up to it so I drove in. The sun was so nice at lunch time, I just had to ride a bike back to work. This dry sunny weather is really nice but we had to do some watering over the 3 day weekend. Just seems wierd to be concerned for our landscape plants getting dried out in Feb!
|
Great ride in this morning, I actually saw another rider. Don't think he was commuting, but it was just nice to see someone else out there. I don't feel so alone anymore!
|
great ride, upper 30's-sun. with last nights rain and AM sunrise...made for some beautiful rays of light through the trees. All will end tonight as 6 inches of snow in the forcast. Tomorrows commute will be interesting. And I was gonna put back the slicks this week. It's gonna have to wait.
|
Nice ride this morning, although, the cagers were a little more on edge than normal. Today it was -18C with no wind. I sure do appreciate not having to use a headlight to see as the days get longer.
Have a good one. |
Well, only around 0C today, not -18, but it is very rare to be cycling in a snowstorm here in Oxfordshire. Cold, but good fun.
Cheers, Ed |
Beautiful day here in NorCal now that the big storm has blown through.

Caloso.
Glad you made it...seems you all are getting our Seattle weather...and maybe we're getting yours. Cold ride in and expecting 60F ride home. Have a safe ride everybody. Today's commute 26.5F at Redmond clear and cold! :) Distance 11mi 51mins Wore Base - Mid - one windproof polar tech swatch chest, polartech fleece arm warmers Outer - Yellow Long sleeve jersey Legs - Col'Lizard Polar tech 100 Sock - thin microfiber sock Glove - Silver winter Helmet - BMX, no cap * A very nice ride..expected time 1hr due to steep hill actual 51 min...still too slow * Left arm warmer was too tight * Was cold after 2 miles so I took a very steep route instead (slower, generating more heat) * Feet OK...Needed sealskins sock * Needed balaclava or something about the neck. * Polar tech swatch is too short, should tuck in so it stays flat |
Nice ride in this morning, beautiful sunrise, 4F/-15C, we are suppose to get into the upper 20's this afternoon. Light snow tonight. Over all a good day to ride, for winter.
|
23F & clear this morning, had just the right layers: thermal long Johns under my work clothes with my heaviest wool sweater. Got an "ice cream" headache from a 30 mph down hill on the ride in. 60F & sunny on the ride home this afternoon and I was overwarm. Don

Hi 50's when I left this morning. Perfect day for a ride. It rained tonight, but I did not get too wet, most of the heavy stuff had moved out by the time I returned.
|
Good ride today to work and home . Still a little cold out . But not bad . Have a good nite .
|
The snow has begun to fall, schools are closed. Morning ride was excellent with the snow and light traffic. The afternoon is gonna be a different story. 3-5 inches expected by 5:00.

Tis not speed that doth draw me instead to the steed of all terrains and forsake the thoroughbred
but security, for my journey these past few days doth take a whiter shade of pale those wheels of rugged topolgy do offer peace of mind o'er the thrill of mere velocity sure knowledge that my journeys end will I meet, unscathed. |
Rain o'ernight puddled
on somber morning streets. Moon behind lit my way. |
Anticipation
Load up! Warm and wet Rained during the night One more with my son |
Good Ride today....-15C and calm. One of these days, spring will have sprung and all the ice on the roads will be gone. While I can't wait for my favorite season the weather we are having these days is pretty darn good.

Beautiful sunny day - about 7C/45F on my way to classes this morning, 10C/50F on my way home this afternoon. Quite funny to see pedestrians, some cyclists even, bundled up in coats, sweaters, and scarves while I'm zipping along in a T and track pants (what can I say - Victoria people are weather wimps, and althought the humidity makes it feel colder, it doesn't make it feel THAT much colder).
It's been very busy between classes lately, with the nice weather - have had to do a lot of pedestrian dodging/slow cycling on the busier pathways. Yesterday even had someone purposely move in front of me so I could not pass on a pathway. Wierd. But the beautiful weather makes it worth it. |
gah. I'm annoyed.
I haven't been bicycle commuting for long. In fact, I only recently started riding again. Today on my commute, taking the city specified/designed route, I ended up waiting at two lights in excess of about 8-10 minutes. Turns out these two lights only turn green if they detect a vehicle in the lane. These are the only two intersections on my route that don't have a bike specific lane and sensor. Time to call up the city. *sigh* Mel |
23F at 6AM: thick frost on my deck, lawn & driveway, I decided to drive in. Good decision as it was pretty icy in spots. I fell & bent the crank arm on my Centurion a week ago Monday & didn't want to repeat. (Bill at the LBS had a special tool that straightened my crank arm). It was really balmy by lunchtime & I was able to make one circuit to work & back in the afternoon. 63F is nice while it lasts. Don

The trip home was a piece of cake. There was only about three inches (8 cm) of snow at that time and most roads were clear. I got to make some first tracks on a couple of segments, since the threat of bad weather and the closing of all area schools kept most people home.
http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?p...147855&size=lg However, the roads were starting to freeze, because I heard the studs fall silent a considerable number of times. There will be another 1-5 inches tonight, so I will finish the week with some more winter riding. Paul |

Part of my trip is on single track through some woods. Very pretty this evening. Tomorrow's gonna be trip! |
