The commute was definately better than the commuter...most days the legs feel great but occasionally they don't.

vtjim 02-08-05 07:45 AM

I can't believe this weather. The trail has less and less snow. It's melting slowly enough that it isn't turning into heavy mashed potatoes. There are long clear sections, some sections of slush, and some sections of hard-packed snow and/or ice. Pretty easy going, but the snow/ice parts are very bumpy so I slow down for those.

Rain this morning. High 30Fs.

PaulH 02-08-05 07:53 AM

I left my overcoat and gloves on the rack today and rode in with just shirt, tie, pants, shoes/sox, and sport jacket. Felt great! Can't recall the last time I did that. After arriving, I found that it was 39 F / 4 C -- colder than I thought. The February thaw is fun, but I'm hoping for one decent storm before spring.

First AM ride in awhile that was above freezing, 36F. Like Paul, all the heavy clothes are in the basket, not on my body. Shorts and light tights today. Ride home should be great like yesterday, 50F.

SaskCyclist 02-08-05 09:07 AM

Today was a good ride in. -25c with a -39c windchill. I dressed at little different today. Yesterday the back of my thighs were cold. Cold armour combined with Sporthill 3sp pants were not warm enough. So today I tried wool/polyester blend on my lower body with the 3sp pants. It was definitely better. I seem to need cold armour on my upper body to keep the moisture away and more insulating material on my legs. Anyway, happy to be on the bike and not in a cage or on the city limo.

Have a great day.

jnbacon 02-08-05 09:25 AM

It was 40f and I dressed normally, which resulted in blue fingernails. I just wish there was a way to store the cool weather for later in the year ...

billh 02-08-05 10:11 AM

The damp really makes the cold feel colder. Cold and damp.

I don't think I've ever been cold in sporthill 3sp before. I'm thinking that -25C is around -10F, at least close. I don't know if I've ever biked in those temps. Don't tell me y'all are sending down another artic express. i was just getting use to 50F.

Today was my coldest commute of the year so far at 28F (-2C) and foggy. That sure doesn't seem so tough when you post it right after somebody reporting -25C. Good job up there.

spang621 02-08-05 05:05 PM

had my first big wipeout going home last night. new to clipless i guess. i'm riding pretty hard up a hill in my highest gear and all of a sudden my right shoe came off, i jerked the wheel hard left and experienced a breif moment of flight followed by a strange hopping with my right leg with bike perpendicular to direction of travel. that didn't last long though, soon on the ground with legs in the air and bike on top of me. you know what though i rather enjoyed it. i got away with a minor scratch, bike not too bad either. isn't it amazing how reflexes take over to minimize damage? i was really lucky there were no cars around, plus about a mile later i realized in my haste to get to the dentist i had forgotten to wear my helmet. good for me my head and teeth were ok.
so the question is, what am i doing wrong that my shoe coming unclicked makes me immediately lose all control of my bike? normally not a complete ****.
and question 2 is, what do i do to stop the shoe from coming out? i know tightening the screws behind the spd but anything else, form-wise maybe?
thanks for any help.

Low 30Fs. Overcast. Very damp. Trail continues to clear. Easy riding on an MTB. More slushy than icy now. Things are supposed to freeze up again soon. I'm hoping the trail clears more before the slop turns back into ice.

Yesterday my evening commute was in the upper 30s and it was raining. Good ride. :)

Map tester 02-09-05 08:40 AM

Mist, sprinkles, and warm, 55°F. Good ride in. It seems that riding in the cold damp air is better for my cold (and sinuses) than the warm dry air in the office or home. Happy trails!

balto charlie 02-09-05 08:42 AM

It was near 60f last night, wore shorts(sorry to rub it in guys) this AM ride was great(40F/5C), even found my lost blinky. I lost it last night in the woods. It was still blinking strong this morning.

SaskCyclist 02-09-05 09:26 AM

Today was a warmer ride with -22c without a wind. Funny though, 70km away in MooseJaw it was -8c. It was a good ride though. I ditched the ski goggles for my regular cylcing glasses after about 5 minutes. It is amazing how comfortable -22C can be when you when the right gear. It is supposed to hit -6C today and close to zero tomorrow. I am looking forward to that. Any cold snaps for you folks in the South won't be comming from this neck of the woods. It is supposed to be warm for until next week.

Have a great day everyone.

mtessmer 02-09-05 10:26 AM

Ahhhhhh... a little snow this morning (around an inch) made for a nice ride in this morning. It was warmer then they said it would be, 18F (they said it would be in the single digits, but what's new). Beautiful surroundings, everything was so still and pure.

spidercyclist 02-09-05 11:49 PM

Rain on the way in to work and snow on the way home.
But still a good ride . The only bad thing was my computer bracket broke .I glued it and hope it holds .
Have a good nite .

Commute home was fun. A good way to defeat the cold miserable weather that makes me depressed. Went slow enough, little traffic, got into a nice rhythm, coast up to the red lights turning green, through the red ones with no cars, wished it didn't have to end...

Wulfheir 02-10-05 07:50 AM

Commute was alright. I took some pics this morning of my road conditions with a little blurb here if you're interested.

balto charlie 02-10-05 09:04 AM

windy, not too cold 38F/3C, crystal clear skies, great ride even though i had to carry a spare wheel on the back of my backpack.

What are those fish I see swimming upstream in the Santa Ana river . . . . so far inland that it seems they won't be able to escape back to sea at low tide? I love my easy spin mornings . . . I see so much more.

caloso 02-10-05 11:40 AM

Today was the first commute with my Lenten commitment to not say a word or make a gesture to any motorist, pedestrian, or cyclist unless it's an emergency.

So far, so good.

jagged 02-10-05 04:06 PM

Yesterday, riding home, I raced past a Lamborghini Gallardo, and left it in my dust. Its 500 horsepower engine was no match for my ability to ride between the lanes in dense urban traffic. Bet I got home faster than he did. Plus, my bike cost about 400 times less than his car.

ollo_ollo 02-10-05 07:14 PM

Took a couple days vacation so I could prune all our fruit trees & trim down the twig dogwoods along the South property line. Now I need a vacation from my vacation!
I did fit in a short recreational ride Tuesday. The sunshine was enjoyable but I was to worn out to go very far. It was 28F at 6AM today & the radio warned of black ice so I did the morning loop by car. Sun was out by lunch time so I rode back on my Grand Jubile. Great ride home in 46F sunshine. Couldn't help smiling at everybody as I rode by. Don

spidercyclist 02-10-05 11:07 PM

Cold ride to work and home . But still a good ride and
I got to ride the ss . I hope next week is warmer .
Have a good nite .

Ed Holland 02-11-05 07:09 AM

Had a nice ride today, despite running a bit late to work. The windy weather of the last couple of days has now calmed down, so cycling is a whole lot more enjoyable...

Have a good weekend,

Ed

PaulH 02-11-05 08:21 AM

28 F / -2 C with 30 mph / 50 kph winds. Some ice patches. Looks like winter has returned! I wore my coat and gloves for the first time this week. Headwinds all the way, meaning that the return trip will be fun.

Paul

cicadashell 02-11-05 08:35 AM

around 20 °F, not too much ice, good to be back on the bike again after spending the better part of this week in phoenix (mesa it was, actually). i have read elsewhere in these forums of the bike-unfriendly nature of that area, and while i recognize a car-centered urban layout when i see one, i must say the lack of ice looked mighty friendly to me.

jnbacon 02-11-05 09:06 AM

Wet, windy, but warm!
Sopping, sucking sand on tires,
But no ice, no ice!
