Absolutely gorgeous day. On the road at 6AM for the 14 mile ride to work. Just a tad cool initially but warmed up quickly. I had my camera and stoppped a few times for snapshots. No traffic, just me and the critters on the country roads. And me and the trash on the city streets.

cicadashell 07-05-05 06:37 AM

light rain this morning, 66 °F, dew point 65 °F. it was a refreshing change from the heat of the past few days. now if we could just work on the state of mind of some of those drivers out there...

oboeguy 07-05-05 08:14 AM

My commute sucked today -- took the subway because my elbow is messed-up . :( Several more days of this in my future, at least. Maybe a couple of weeks.

capejohn 07-05-05 08:46 AM

Slept in today because Monday is racquetball after work. Once it was too late to ride I remembered today is Tuesday. dirty bastaard.

ahpook 07-05-05 10:35 AM

Thanks to a nice thick marine layer, it was cool and slightly foggy on the way in.
Perfect cycling weather. Only problem was, the three-day weekend interrupted my 'flow' and I forgot that I'd brought my used-up towel home on Friday. Luckily I keep a little hand-towel in my office, but it was still a "Monday" moment.

Ha! I was just in a shouting match with a motorist a few minutes ago, coming home for lunch.
I rolled up to a stop sign, preparing to cross a fairly busy road in my neighborhood, and waited
for a gap in the traffic, as usual.

The traffic was light, so I just stood there in a trackstand, slowly rocking back and forth, and
the last car to approach actually stopped in the middle of the lane, 35mph road. I noticed it had
no turn signal on, and then realized they had stopped for me!

At this time, I 'stood down', straddling the top tube, and waited. They waited. I pointed to the stop
sign that was beside me, and yelled at them. Meanwhile, cars are honking at this silly motorist.
They still wait. I'm frantically waving them on, shouting at them that I have a freakin' stop sign.
They finally move on, yelling something at me through the open window... I just laugh at them.

Some people... sheesh!

p.s.

Is it just me, or is this thread just waaayy too long?

The first post is over 3 years old. Could there be a better way to do this?

Just wondering... anybody else feel the same, or have any ideas? Or not?

Yeah it's too long, and a "normal" thread is not really appropriate for this kind of daily-checkin type topic.
It should really be a "ring buffer" that keeps the last 100 posts or so, overwriting the oldest one when a new post comes in. But I dunno if this messageboard software supports that.

tulip 07-05-05 02:50 PM

grumpy. I didn't want to go to work. Usually I perk up about 15 mins. into the ride, but not today. Then some roads downtown were closed so I had to do some maneuvering on the streets with more and faster cagers. Hmph. Plus all the trash that people left lying around from yesterday along the river. Apparently alot of people just don't know how to pick up after themselves.

The ride was fine, but my attitude needs a few weeks at the beach!

Tree Trunk 07-05-05 03:55 PM

My outlook was quite a bit better than velogirl's this morning (that's OK, ms. velogirl...look in the mirror and say "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and gosh darnit people like me"). Cool morning, humid from the much needed rain yesterday, and the humidity was hanging over the forest preserves. I took the scenic route this morning and found a trail I had never discovered in the eleven years of my commute! I too was tired and grumpy to start my commute, but the scenery changed it all!!!!

I disagree about the length of this thread. I just click on the "go to first new post", and only read the new postings, but I like to go back and read some of the really old one from time to time.

caloso 07-05-05 05:52 PM

Did not ride in today. Actually, I've been off the bike since Friday, which might be my longest stretch in a year. We were up in Tahoe for the long weekend. I took my POS mtb but never got around to riding it. On the other hand, I did a lot of hiking with the family and some trail running with the dog, so my legs are going to be super strong this week.

spider-man 07-05-05 06:13 PM

Rode to work this afternoon as Tropical Storm Cindy was closing in on the city. I saw only one other cyclist on the road, a co-worker of mine who was heading home. I was running earlier in the day under light showers, and I was the only one outside, it seemed. Truthfully, the weather was not that bad. I don't understand the fear of being rained on. Is there a name for that?

I'll ride home in a couple of hours. Probably will see some heavier precip, but I like rain rides. That's what fenders are for!

tulip 07-05-05 07:55 PM

Big thunderstorm across the river on the way home, and the folks going the other way were soaked throught, but somehow it decided to give me a break. Two airplanes attempting to land at National Airport thought better of it and continued on their way, tucking their wheels back up as they climbed. I will give Tree Trunk's affirmation a try tomorrow, thanks.

I’ve been trying to squeeze more miles in where I can. I started commuting July 19th last year. At the 6th month point I was at exactly 1000 miles. I took to many days off during spring semester so now I need 300 more miles to reach 2000 for the year… I already set my goal for 3000 next year, but I need to concentrate on finishing this one out strong.

I have added 2 miles each way to my commute. I gave my brother a bike to entice him and me out a couple evenings. My whole family was in town for the 4th so I squeezed in 35 miles with them. But I only work 3 days this week and 4 next and I won’t be able to get any miles in this weekend. So next weekend the weather needs to cooperate because I have to ride a century!

Oh yeah, today’s commute was awesome! My fastest non-wind aided commute at 19.5mph! Not a cloud in the sky, no wind, and only 60F. It was great!

I told myself that I wasn’t going to push it on the way home so I stayed off of my aero bars and caught a lot of wind and basically took it easy. Then with 4 miles to go I looked at my average speed… and the race was on. I dropped into a tuck, which is good for 2mph and I managed to pull my 16.9mph up to a 17.6mph average. So much for taking it easy.

cicadashell 07-06-05 06:12 AM

overcast and cool, damp, moderate tailwind. ahh! no better way to start the day! the motorists were well-behaved, too, and no 18-wheelers either. more more more said the biker...

bikebuddha 07-06-05 07:02 AM

It took all my will power to stop riding when I got to the office this morning. I need a new job bad.

Spudz 07-06-05 08:56 AM

Fifty-two beautiful degrees and a slight tail wind on the way in. Dusted a guy on a squeaky ten-speed, so that made my morning!

caloso 07-06-05 10:01 AM

65F/19C: cool, calm, and absolutely gorgeous for riding a bike. I'm actually feeling sorry for folks who can't conceive of getting to work without their car. None so blind as those who won't see.

* jack * 07-06-05 11:41 AM

Had a near-miss today. A car was speeding, failed to stop at a stopsign, and had to slam on the brakes
to avoid hitting me. I was riding an '83 Motobecane that I picked up recently, but hadn't replaced all the
cables yet. I saw the guy speeding by the stopsign, and I squeezed the front brake and the cable snapped!
I was like, "oh s***!" and I just mashed the pedals and sped by, a few feet from the front of the car.
Thrilling, but I don't want to do that again. Gotta stop by the LBS on the way home from work...
I'm such an idiot - should've replaced that cable a long time ago. This just isn't my week...

Beautiful weather here in Calgary this morning. Don't know what the temperature is, and don't care. :) However I had the most embarassing spill ever today - tried to roll a curb right in front of my house, did it too fast and too far forward on the bike to lift the front wheel and ended up getting thrown off. Glad the neighborhood kids didn't see that - some of them can pull some very nice wheelies. Now there's dirt on the ass-portion of my obnoxiously colored cycling jacket. I'm also developing a sentiment that seems uncommon everywhere but here - I actually want my commute to be longer. 15 minutes just isn't enough. Too bad there aren't any more scenic areas along the way (I already go through all the ones I can).

I am so incredibly jealous of you! I love Tahoe and would love to be hiking, etc., too! Glad you had a good time! :)

LOL! I hope you feel the same way when winter comes around...

Just remember that there's no law that requires you to take the most direct route!

VinMan 07-06-05 07:54 PM

7 Miles in hot & humid Tallahassee. After sitting at a desk all day, it's 20 or so minutes of bliss!!!

blown cue 07-06-05 08:18 PM

Dark. Hot. Humid. Lots of bugs. Bugs are a great motivator. You don't need to buy a fancy trainer. Just bike at night with no bug repellant. That'll get you motivated.

Javan 07-07-05 04:44 AM

Cool, 60, cloudy, slight (5-10 mph) headwind. Body is still chilled.

capejohn 07-07-05 05:54 AM

Brisk, windy, drizzle and clouds. The wind kept my average speed down. It took a while to get "in the groove". Played racquetball last night and was a little tuckered out. Recovered after a couple of miles and the rest was cake.

JOHN J 07-07-05 07:06 AM

good morning a wet one I may add.

I was getting tired of lousy weather and decided to ride regardless unless a tornado flood ...

I was up at 6 am and it was cloudy and cool no wind no rain so Ride I did, well about 2 miles out it started to pour and didnt stop untill now 9am est.

full Fenders are COOL!!! im nice and clean.

the rain was not a cold rain so it was refreshing to ride in.

have a great day

"John"

RonH 07-07-05 09:57 AM

Cloudy and cooler than usual after TS Cindy blew through last night.
A light mist seemed to be falling but I didn't get wet, just got on my glasses.
I expected to find a few traffic lights not working because of power outages but didn't come across any and no fallen trees or branches in the road.
I hope the ride home is as uneventful. :o
