Another steamy ride in today, less warm than yesterday. Still got a good sweat going. Had on motorist honk at me for moving about 3 inches off the gutter...They wouldn't want to hit roadkill a second time, why do I have to? :-)

vtjim 07-12-05 05:57 AM

Surprisingly cool and comfortable this morning. About 64F. Supposed to get uncomfortable again later today.

I took up position behind a couple of guys on hybrids with luggage. Stayed behind them for about 4 miles and I'm not sure they ever realized I was there. :) It was a leisurely pace. Nice in the cool air.

Hey Skijoring, do you ride in from the south or east by any chance? Always seems to get about 10 degrees hotter when I get to the Coast Guard Station.

luckysnafu 07-12-05 06:22 AM

Another warm and humid ride to work. Sweating pretty good by the time I arrived at work. Going to be mid 90's for the ride home this afternoon, possibly some spotty showers. Surprisingly there wasn't much traffic out this morning which was nice.

cicadashell 07-12-05 06:48 AM

light rain for a few minutes today. otherwise a little warm for this hour of the day: 73 °F, dew point 60 °F. had a tailwind yesterday on the way home, which is a groovy thing, baby. i am getting used to my new gearing, liking it on the flats, although i miss that quick-start feeling i got before.

Walkafire 07-12-05 07:15 AM

Very Warm even at 5 am.... Not too bad a ride for 2 hours sleep!~

skijoring 07-12-05 07:31 AM

:) VTJIM, I ride in from S. Burlington( intersection w/route 7 and 189) out to Essex/Essex Juntion via Lime Kiln and route 15. I loop back in via route 2, then roll out S. Brownell until about Van Sicklen. Then home. It's about a 20 mile round-tripper. Going to be a hot afternoon!

Edit: I used to ride through Winooski via that nasty bridge then out Route 7 to Colchester. Route 15 is almost as bad, but I only do that in the morning. The only bike path section I get to roll on is that part that parallels Spear Street.

bcritch 07-12-05 09:01 AM

This morning was a nice ride in. Low 70's and wet streets from days of storms that helped make it feel cooler. Driver's were all nice.

mjw16 07-12-05 09:44 AM

Rode in this morning on my roadie (89' Centurion) since my daily commuter is still in need of it's street re-conversion (slicks, fenders, lights, etc). I converted it to 700x42 knobbies, removed the fenders, etc for a four day trip along the C&O Canal. I need to do this soon (along with some regular cleaning and maintenence) as we're expecting rain for the rest of the week. The roadie is fast and fun and the ride in this morning was cool with pockets of fog along the water. The ride home this afternoon will likely suck as the heat index will be over 100. Doesn't much matter though, in keeping with my new training philosophy, I'll spin home trying to keep in a good cardio range as opposed to hammering all the way. So I shouldn't be too hot when I get off of the bike.

caloso 07-12-05 10:27 AM

Had a nice easy spin into the office this morning. I chatted with a guy at a light who was in his full club kit and looking like he was heading out for a training ride on his Madone 5.9. Beautiful machine, except for that funny looking fin.

OMG is it going to hot on the way home. 104F predicted. I should be soaked by the time I roll into the driveway.

eastbaybob 07-12-05 10:42 AM

I switched out tires on the Atlantis just to see how it rides with 2.1 knobbies as oppsed to the 1.5 simi slick. Although I did this last night I still left home around 8:00 AM. Temps were perfect low 60's, but humidty was up to 100% so my goal is just to ride slow. I reached my goald and slowly made my way to work, total commute time came in around 13 minutes.

The thing about the humidity is that it just sucks the sweat out of the body, it doesn't matter how easy things are taken. As I don't have a shower at the office I think I may carry a small container of baby powder.

Bolo Grubb 07-12-05 10:55 AM

Woot commuted again today

Fair 91°F UV Index: 4 Moderate Wind: From NNE at 6 mph Humidity: 12%

As you can see good weather for the trip in but the forcast for the trip is for 112 F

11.5 miles, almost all of it on a pretty good Multi-use path. Everyone I encountered on the path behaved as expected and got alot of good mornings.

I averaged 13.9 mph, the Crankbro Candy pedals made a real difference in pedaling. The only bad thing that happened was my bike feel over as I was getting my lock out of the pannier and fell against a stucco wall. Tore up the bar tape pretty good on that side and added some scratches to the paint on the bike.

I will likely replace the bar tape this weekend.

Spudz 07-12-05 12:05 PM

Nice ride in again, even nicer once I found out that my commute will have a few more miles added onto it next month!

spidercyclist 07-12-05 09:50 PM

Excellent ride to work. Hardly any traffic, but I saw a lot of people out walking on the ride home tonight. Must of rained before I got out, parts of the railbed where I ride were very muddy. Have a good night!

cicadashell 07-13-05 06:15 AM

mellow trip...74 °F (already), dew point allegedly 65 °F although it feels even steamier after last night's rain, courtesy the final remnants of dennis. the moisture made for eye-catching shafts of sunlight between the trees. it will be pretty muggy on the way home, i imagine.

vtjim 07-13-05 07:00 AM

Fairly comfortable this morning. Humid but not obnoxiously so.

Yesterday afternoon I tried something new: I soaked my jersey in cold water. It felt nice for 3 or 4 miles but by the time I got home it was dry again.

luckysnafu 07-13-05 07:16 AM

Almost got run off the road last night by some idiot in a utility truck. We were approaching a RR crossing so I took the lane, and he wasnt happy about that at all. So he drives in the other lane around me and crosses the tracks and gets to the stop sign which is right across them. I obviously catch up to him and while approaching his right side, he starts driving off the right side of the road trying to run me into a ditch. I wasn't going fast and was able to stop, but this was the first time anybody has done something like this to me. I yelled and gave him the finger but he just took off. Wish I would have gotten his license plate number, but I was too busy braking and controlling my bike :(

bcritch 07-13-05 08:22 AM

Today's ride in was nice enough. But, last night, like luckysnafu, I had a middle finger incident.

I am on an access road, two lanes, one-way, with a wide paved shouldar. I am on in the middle of the paved shoulder, riding uphill when a car that is right next to me blows its horn and continues on, with the driver sticking his arm out the window giving me the finger. So, I reciprocated and he stopped his car, not even moving over to the shoulder...so I pull up next to them, the passenger has the window down, I look in and say, "Did I do something wrong? Why did you go honking your horn at me?" The passenger just looks stunned and embarressed. The thug driver won't make eye contact and pulls away yelling "You're going to get killed riding your bike like that." Idiot. Like what, 100% legal and visible? I think he just wanted to f#@k with someone. I think he was surprised that I wasn't afraid and stopped to talk.

noisebeam 07-13-05 08:47 AM

Warmest evening commute yet this year. 115°F official temp, I recorded 115.6°F on my shaded bike thermometer on the busiest and most concrete sections of road. It wasn't the temperature that was so bad, but the 115°F 15mph headwind that requied extra effort, like riding into a massive hair dryer.

kirkmuffin 07-13-05 09:31 AM

I take a trail that cross the road in one spot, a T type intersection, its always a little dicey, because even when I have the signal, motorists are itching to turn right. A big 'ole special neon sign that indicates right turn on red is prohibited comes up (I guess they've had incidents in the past) but that doesn't stop the right turners from going away sometimes, so I'm always careful, go a little slower, make eye contact.

Today the guy in right turn lane is cool, he's waiting for me, I go for it - and nearly get creamed by somebody turning right from the straight lane beside him. I tell ya, expect the worst from motorists...

skijoring 07-13-05 10:13 AM

Nice ride in again today, a little steamy there at the end as the sun was gaining strength. Saw five other bike commuters today (that's my record so far in BTV) and they all got waves. I could hear one's knobby tires on an MTB from the other side of the road, and over traffic noise. I remember those days!

eastbaybob 07-13-05 10:16 AM

I was running a bit late this morning so did not leave the house till seconds after 8:05AM (work starts at 8:00!). Temps were warmer than yesterday probably mid to high 60's, humidity a bit lower. The commute whet fine but before I made it to work the sun came out. First time its done that as usually were have a nice marine layer in the morning. By the time I made it to work I was pretty warm and a little sweaty, but today I had the answer for that, baby powder. Once dry I put some on and feel like I just walked out of a shower.

Expected highs here in the high 70's today, the first heat wave of the summer.

mtessmer 07-13-05 10:32 AM

I haven't been on here for a while. I just got off a weeks vacation that included allot of biking on our tandem. We're on day six of temps in the 90's and many more to come. That's fine with me, I can deal with the heat and humidity. I'll take it over our winters any day. I had a great commute in, I took the long way and added an extra 4 miles (making for a 12.5 mile commute). I just love that route, I take it often. I'll get a nice lunch run and take a long way home. Summer is just great! I'm in heaven!

Mhendricks 07-13-05 12:13 PM

Haven't ridden this week and probably won't. Here in San Jose, Ca. temps have been and are expected in the 90's al week. Don't get me wrong, I like to ride but I'm not gonna kill myself in the heat. Instead I ride a little at night when it cools down.

Longhorn 07-13-05 09:39 PM

I had the nicest ride since I started commuting a month ago! A storm went through before I got off work but the streets were already pretty dry and the temperature was in the low 80's, though more than 80 percent humidity. But it was ten degrees cooler than it usually is at 8 p.m. and it felt great! My heart didn't pound nearly as much as usual and my breathing was more in control. What a difference the temperature makes!

spidercyclist 07-13-05 10:07 PM

Good ride to work and home . Have a good nite .

jpearl 07-13-05 10:22 PM

Hot and humid with overcast skies and annoying wind. Otherwise, much better than being jammed onto a packed subway car.

Caught a few moments of this morning's Tour stage before heading out, watched the action on the summit of the Col de la Madelaine. Left about five minutes late, but made it to work in time. Third time commuting, and third time passing "yellow super safety biker" as I call him due to his overabundance of safety vest, flags, stickers and reflective pads. Had fun pretending I was at Paris-Roubaix as I took a section of cobblestones in Soho.

The ride home was more fun. Two serious sections of cobblestones on West Houston going to the West Side Bike Path (boy do I love my 'cross bike). Nice pace on the path, caught up to and talked with a guy riding the same bike as me. Spotted about four other 'cross bikes today. Stopped to watch some marine construction in Riverside park, then did a relaxing spin back to my apartment where my wife and I watched today's stage of the Tour.

A good ride today, but I think Alexandre Vinokourev had a tougher, yet more rewarding commute: He had to ride from Grenoble to Besancon over two beyond--category climbs at full intensity!!!

PainTrain 07-13-05 10:44 PM

One of those strange random decisions on the way in tonight. I went the 'long' way around the lake so I could see the sun set on the water, and so was not on the usual path at the moment a police helicopter crashed on it.

Needless to say, I'm asking myself "Why" right now at work....

Whoa, so you could have been killed by a falling helicopter??? Crazy. Someone's looking out for you... ;)

My commute was frustrating this morning, as I hit every possible red light on the way there. It was as if I was 30 seconds out of sync with the world.

vtjim 07-14-05 06:21 AM

My commute was slow this morning. It had nothing to do with the beer and pizza I was consuming until 11 last night.

Rain woke me up at 5 this morning but things had pretty much dried out by the time I left for work at 7.

I came up behind some old dude in a Land Yacht type of car. First he was just sitting in the road with his reverse lights on. (Red flag raised in my head.) Then as I was getting closer, the reverse lights went off and he slowly moved forward about 100 yards to a stop sign and sat there.

I came up behind him and waited ever so patiently. No other cars in sight. He must have been lost because he very. slowly. turned. right. Like: Slower than walking speed. I finally lost patience and went around him to make my left turn.

I think I'm dehydrated. Time for more water. :p
