Great ride to work and home. Good speed and good time. I just wish work would go as smooth. Have a good night.

No commute for me today. I'm telecommuting. My wife doesn't like me riding in the house. ;)

Discovered my new neighbors are bike commuters, as I rolled out of the house this morning, they were
strapping on their helmets and rolling out also. I tagged along for a few blocks, making small talk, etc...
Makes me happy to see more bicycle commuters in Durham - there aren't nearly enough of us!

skijoring 08-10-05 08:01 AM

Mandatory day off from biking today. I'm not a compulsive commuter (jus' kidding).

SaskCyclist 08-10-05 08:23 AM

First commute in 3 weeks (holidays). It was awesome. 12C and sunny with little wind.

MisterJ 08-10-05 08:33 AM

Well, Friday I was able to make my first halfway commute to work. 12 miles by car to the Indian Trail Park-n-Ride and then 12 miles by my trusty Dahon to work at Perimeter. I allowed plenty of time both ways. But I still got caught in an incredible thunderstorm on the way back to the car. It's hard to explain that rain on a bike (when it's warm) really isn't all that bad.

Next week I will try it again.

Summer is back. :)
After suffering through rain Monday and overcast skies yesterday, it was great to get to work with my jersey unzipped and the sweat pouring off me.
Sorry for the graphic description. :p

Stubacca 08-10-05 10:24 AM

A few thunderstorms threatening yesterday afternoon, but the bark was worse than the bite.

I left home about 15 minutes earlier this morning, which was just before the sun had popped up properly. I'm going to need to think about mounting the lights again soon...

I'm a newbie here. today was my second day of bike commuting. This morning was absolutely perfect... cool, good traffic, and a great ride. I'm excited for my afternoon trip.

This is only my second week commuting....the excitement never ends! Enjoy.

mtessmer 08-10-05 02:10 PM

Boy, I'm able to put the extra miles in today. I took the long way in to work, did a long lunch cruise, and I'm planning the long way home. It's a perfect day today... I should have taken it off and did a day ride, hmmmm....

KrisPistofferson 08-10-05 03:18 PM

On the way in at 5:30 AM there was hardly anybody on the road and it was cool out. I was feeling good from a surplus of caffeine and I just started hammering like it was a weekend training ride. So about 9:30, by the time all my endorphins wore off, I was wiped out. Had to drag my butt through the rest of the day because I thought I was Jan Ullrich! The commute home was a little slower. ;)

Excellent! Another Durham commuter. In which part of the Bull City do you live?

Ah, another from my hometown. I'm glad folks are starting to commute back home. I occassionally check out the Bike and Ped group just to see what's happening back in the Bull City.

My commute today was uneventful, except for getting asked out on a date by a man in a van. He was headed the other way, but he was not shy in asking!

lelak 08-10-05 08:14 PM

Fell off for the first time today.

A water bottle was being blown across the lane by the wind; I saw it and managed to avoid it. Until it was ricocheted back into my lane by hitting the tyre of the car in the next lane, and under my front wheel.

I managed to unclip and get my feet down as the bike went down, so all that hit the ground were the handlebar and pedal on one side. Unscathed.

Not one of the people at the bus stop ten feet away did more than glance in my direction. *rolleyes*

Good rides all week so far. I was a bit slow today due to soreness, 'cause of over-exerting on the way home yesterday. There was a racer type with the aero bars and the insouciant manner who did not even acknowledge my presence when i said "good evening" at a stoplight, and whom I then proceded to pace for six miles till he pulled a right-turn fakie at a red and slipped away. Good fun, but I paid for it today :D

NWS suggests the nice summer weather here in the Bay Area will continue through the weekend. I'm drinking it in...

spidercyclist 08-10-05 11:17 PM

Good ride to work and home. If it wasn't for the ride, I probably couldn't stand work. I think one of the better parts of the day is the ride to work or the time I spend with my family. I just wish work would be a little better. Have a good night.

skijoring 08-11-05 06:23 AM

Humid, not so hot. Very little wind out there...overcast. Saw some mourning doves, and smelled a skunk.

oboeguy 08-11-05 06:41 AM

I've changed my route somewhat the last couple of days. Having had a rash of broken spokes (see thread over in Mechanical) I decided I need to avoid a bumpy section of the Hudson Greenway. I now go all the way to 72nd St on Riverside Drive, whereas I used to enter the Greenway at 96th St. Sure, it's a little goofy to take the Greenway all of a mile and a half, but it beats the streets (Riverside kinda ends around there, so busy streets it would be). I find I enjoy the new route more because it's less bone jarring and I'm less worried about my spokes breaking. :)

For the return trip I'm going to try something even weirder. I'll take the Greenway to 72nd, exit onto Riverside and ride it until I pick-up the Greenway again at the water treatment plant (past 125th). Seems weird, right? It is, but it allows me to climb the monster uphill from Manhattan's lowest point (river level) to nearly its highest natural point at the end of my commute -- great training! I'm not sure what I'll do on Fridays while the summer is still on, because Riverside gets a lot of highway overflow on Friday afternoons.

I live off of Miami Blvd and commute to RTP. Its about 8 miles roundtrip. How about you?

spidercyclist 08-11-05 09:57 PM

Great ride to work. Saw some other people cycling tonight, just some kids riding their BMX bikes. I hope the rain holds off for another day. Have a good night.

Fun morning commute today. Overcast and cool air.

I was behind another roadie for almost the entire ride. He wasn't very fast but I wasn't in a hurry. It was one of those things where I could do a few crank revolutions, coast, and repeat. :)

We were meandering along and I spotted something coming up fast behind us. Slowing for a stop sign, a VERY fit woman on an MTB came up next to me. We exchanged hellos. There were people on the trail so she got between me and the other roadie and we had a little peloton. Eventually she must have gotten bored because she passed the roadie.

Then the race was on. It was hilarious to watch these two. The guy accelerated and tried to stay behind her, but gave up. I was just hanging out further back, watching this.

Right as we were getting into Burlington, the woman was very far ahead, and the roadie sprinted. I stayed behind him and we were cruising along at around 25mph. He finally took a left off the trail. I went to the waterfront to take a picture with my new cell phone. (Geek that I am.)

Still wishing I could get a commuting group together...

Want to see the picture I took? (I shrunk it. Quality is poor.)

I saw two sidewalk cyclists today...Yesterday, I fixed another flat at work before heading home. Two weeks, two flats. They usually come in threes, right?

triguyrdu 08-12-05 07:20 AM

3rd day. I even biked to the bank to make a car payment. How ironic is that. lol

It was a little hotter today that earlier in the week but honestly didn't feel it.

BFBridgeguy 08-12-05 09:06 AM

After a 5 week break because of this:

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...1&page=1&pp=25

I was able to ride to work today. And even though the weather was hot and sticky it felt great. It seemed like all the lights were turning green for me, all the drivers were behaving, and it felt like I was floating on air.

I live off of Club Blvd, commute through West Durham/Ninth St. area to Duke campus.
Not a long commute, but I do it daily & take lunch rides - so I still squeeze the miles in.
There's somebody else on the Forums (Mr. Shadow) who lives on Miami Blvd.

caloso 08-12-05 09:50 AM

On Capitol Avenue I was passed by an ancient Vespa. And for a moment I thought about accelerating on to his draft but I was hit by the gas vapors and thought I'd probably choke to death.

djgonzo007 08-12-05 11:17 AM

Overcast and cool but otherwise a great commute (9.5 miles) to work this morning. The fog and clouds are burning off so it'll be perfect weather when I ride home this afternoon.

ExPhysRoadie 08-12-05 12:02 PM

Yesterday was my first "real" bike commute. I've ridden to school before, but this seemed a little more real since it's actually work and a little bit further than campus was. Overall it was a good experience. The route I have to take is longer than the direct route I used to take by car, but still only about 4-5 miles, so really not bad at all. I was a bit tired, as I work in the stock room at Pottery Barn Kids, unloading trucks and moving furniture boxes all day, and then riding back home right after that. I did notice that I thought the route was flat, and it most definitely is not!

I don't know how long I'll be commuting - my car literally drowned the other day, and I haven't decided what to do about it. I did enjoy the commute though, so I'll probably keep it up for a while :)
