Had a nice ride today, well as good as it can be when its almost 80 and humid out there. My mirror fell off going through an intersection, so its time to buy a new one.

cicadashell 07-19-05 06:52 AM

yay, back on the bike after taking monday off (i rode 212 miles on my track bike, details here if you're interested). 71 °F, dew point 67 °F, which is down from yesterday afternoon of 75 °F, which is really outrageous.

starting tomorrow we will be having the annual street art fairs in our fair city, which are always a sore point for those persons whose well-being revolves around the time it takes them to drive to work. it seems, however, that this year some folks don't even want to wait until tomorrow - they are rude and pushy and willing to take great risks to arrive at the office 20 seconds earlier. as if anyone would even notice! well good morning, perkins! peckins, it is? well, how long have you been with us, peckins? twelve years, you say? well, perkins, good to have you aboard!

This morning was 91 F with 40% humidity. I really like being able to sweat a bit and the coolness of the air, no dry lungs, compared to the hot dry evening commute. Its the perfect weather to push hard in. I've been using the evening commute to warm up the muscles and enjoy the ride.
Its gonna get exciting the next few days with highs around 113 and lots of thunderstorms (which means lots of wind and dust)!

Temp this morning was 67f and humidity 81%. When I left the house it was strange, the sky was pure blue and it was sooo warm. Even with the lower humidity it was a warm ride that took considerable time to cool down from.

The ride itself was fine. I missed the stop light and was set back a bit more than a minute but I made it to work just a little bit late.

We're getting a break from the sizzling skillet heat and the remnants of the Delta breeze were still blowing this morning. The announcer on KXJZ actually said, "We're getting some relief from the heat today. Our expected afternoon high is 100 degrees."

Funny how that actually feels cool after a week of 105F + (what is that, 40C or so?)

mmerner 07-19-05 11:15 AM

fixed my FD and it's barrel adjuster last night. now I can ride in more than half the gears.
very nice ride!

bcritch 07-19-05 11:23 AM

Whew - it was hot and humid, but I still think my house was even hotter and more humid!

Today was my first commute on a bike ever. I live in Berkeley and work in Emeryville. The great thing is that it's a 1/2 hour on the bike (same as in the car) and I'm only on city streets for 5-10 minutes. There are excellent bike paths the run along the water. Not only was it an easy ride, it was so incredibly relaxing, peaceful and scenic. I feel great and I can't wait for the ride home tonight and to work tomorrow. I just need to remember my work shoes since I look like an idiot in my biking shoes.

caloso 07-19-05 04:38 PM

Good for you KristenGilbert! I went to college there (as you might guess from my screen name). Be careful!

bikebuddha 07-19-05 05:23 PM

Heavy rain for the first two miles of the ride home, I was soaked.

As You Like It 07-19-05 07:52 PM

Today was kind of "aaargh."

This past week, I've been having a slow leak in the back tire of my bike. This morning, I noticed that the little screw-down bit on the Presta valve looked a little bit cockeyed, but I didn't really think much of it. Well, I aired it up, and when I was pulling the pump head off the valve, that little stem-and-cap bit broke clean off. So I thought, "crap, I broke that firm and proper, but no biggie, I've got a spare tube, I'll just swap it out and get a new spare tube on my lunch hour" Fine thought, but when I dug into my tool bag for my tire levers, not a one could be found. So I checked the pocket I used to keep my tools in in my backpack. No luck. I looked on my desk, in my sewing room, on the dining table, on the windowsill by the front door, and on the shelf where the CDs are...these are all the places I am liable to just set random stuff, but no, no tire levers.

I'd been aiming to get to the office at 7:00 a.m. this morning to work on a special project, but by the time I'd rent the house asunder looking for my tire levers, it was already 10 after. I cursed, grumbled, and resolved to drag out my old bike, top up the tires, and take my flat with me on my backpack and get a new tube and another set of tire levers, 'cause goodness only knows where my old ones are. I have two cats, which means I'll probably find 'em behind the sofa, fridge, or under the toilet sometime weeks hence.

So I take off for work at about 7:30. Halfway there (around Prospect Ave.) it starts raining. Two miles later, I'm at the office, dripping mud, spitting grit, but feeling a lot better...I'd worked a fair amount of frustration off, and at least it wasn't hot out. Plus, my new wheel is significantly lighter than one of the ones off a mountain bike. It beat the heck out of the day I had to haul my bent rim down to the bike shop to determine that it was too torqued to save.

After work, I took my wheel down to the bike shop (another 3.5 miles) to have them take a look at the tire. It's got a little cut in it, and I wasn't sure if it was that or the damaged Presta valve that was causing my slow leak. Turns out the tire's okay enough, and I had a free flat-fix coming to me anyhow on account of so recently having bought the bike there. So I got out of there just a fiver lighter, after having bought another pair of tire levers.

I learned today that I'm already totally spoiled by my road bike. My old trusty Trek 800, which has seen me through countless miles, just about felt like riding somebody else's bike.

spidercyclist 07-19-05 09:47 PM

Good ride to work and home, no flats and no rain today but still a little muddy. The bike felt a little sluggish today, I don't know if I'm just tired or if the bike needs a tune-up or a good cleaning. Besides that, still a good ride. Have a good night.

spingineer 07-19-05 10:06 PM

Weather-wise, it was overcast, but didn't rain. However, I did flat out 3/4 the way into the office. There was a chip of wood lodged in my rear wheel. Then, I realized I needed new tires ... I could see the threading of my tires. Not a really good idea to continue riding, but I couldn't help it.

They had a lunch time ride, sponsored by the companies local to the area. So despite having dangerous tread on my tires, I went ahead and rode a social 10 miles during lunch. But glad I did it.

I decided to take the train back home, but off to the bike shop to stock up on supplies.

Oh well ... what a day it was

6am. here in N.East Scotland 15c. Felt cold on the downhills. Quiet backroad route into work, only 1 car today. I can't believe some of the temperatures you guys are gettin in the states, great to ride in but you must be drenched in sweat when you arrive at work. Still I'm envious it felt almost autumnal here this morning with a cool north breeze!

ridealot 07-20-05 05:25 AM

Eerily quiet and calm this morning coming to work. Hardly any traffic, no wind. Just an overall peacfulness in the air. I must have reached the cycling nirvana or something. Anyway, hot afternoon in store for the ride home.

Past couple of weeks have been pretty typical. Nothing exciting.

mjw16 07-20-05 06:05 AM

Great ride in this morning, still warm but lower humidity. I've had a string of bad luck recently: bad storms, mystery flats, chain slipping on worn cassette, large bugs hitting me directly in the eye (lost my glasses)-this has happened twice this week already. But the most disturbing thing is the new trend of strong riders who I'm having a hard time keeping up with. I rarely see anyone and I'm happy to now be seeing more riders, but I've been dropped twice this week and have struggled to keep up with others. I've been riding a different bike and have been concentrating more on cardio and opposed to sprinting strength, but I don't like this new trend. I don't like it at all. :-)

cicadashell 07-20-05 06:33 AM

such a pleasant ride it was! fair and calm, 62 °F and 61 °F dew point. yes, that's a lot of relative humidity, but overall the air is drier and will be that way for at least a few days. it was so cool this morning i almost felt like fall was coming. and the drivers were well-behaved, so i did not make myself hoarse by pouring out a stream of invective as i did yesterday morning.

skijoring 07-20-05 07:10 AM

Nice ride in today, I believe the temp. was below 70 for the start. Went riding yesterday for a few hours in the mid-morning heat and just dodged a big rainstorm, which ushered in a little 'cold front' that will flush out some of the humidity yet still leave us with warm days. Should be nice riding again tomorrow. Rode by 3 expired skunks--that's a lot of stink.

rosem 07-20-05 07:16 AM

I rode around town for a while and headed to Subway. Two bikers asked if I wanted to join them, but they were heading the oppisite way of Subway, so I had to turn them down. :)

JohnBrooking 07-20-05 07:16 AM

My office finally installed the bike rack yesterday, so today I got to use it for the first time - no more locking to the handicapped parking sign! :)

vtjim 07-20-05 07:27 AM

I was just getting on my bike to leave the house when one of my ultra marathon-running friends (who's also a co-worker) came up on his MTB. He does a bit of cross training.

We rode in together. Much nicer conditions this morning. Low humidity. Could have been a little cooler but it wasn't bad at all. Commute seemed to go a lot faster with a riding buddy.

lala 07-20-05 08:53 AM

It was awesome today!

Clear and sunny, but cool. I'm practicing commuting in my track gear so it was more of a workout/slower, but I'm getting stronger.

Best thing about today was: hummingbirds! (and bunnies)

eastbaybob 07-20-05 11:34 AM

Clear again today and warm. I rode very slow to avoid over heating. I nailed the one stop light on the ride, that is my current project working on figuring out it's timing. I pulled into work late.

Once here phase two began. I go to the handicap stall in the bathroom and take my shirt off. I wipe myself down with a paper towel. Then just stand there trying to become cool. Back to the office for a dose of baby powder. In a couple month there may be access to a shower at the office, a day I look forward to.

ahpook 07-20-05 11:46 AM

Holy smokes!

First day on SPD cleats and a personal best 30:04 door-to-door. Avg speed 18.6.
Nice cool weather, plenty of traffic to keep the lights green, and zoooom.

RonH 07-20-05 02:05 PM

When I got home on Monday I was beat for some reason. Still felt like hell on Tuesday so I drove. Took forever to get to work. I decided last night I was riding regardless of how I felt. Glad I did. :) This morning's ride was great!

I'll be heading home in a few minutes and I hope the ride home is just as good.

Javan 07-20-05 05:47 PM

Nice ride today. Humidity is finally gone!!!!

RonH 07-20-05 06:37 PM

The ride home was GREAT. It was still raining a little when I left work but it stopped when I was about half way home. :) The fenders are awesome. I had to ride through several puddles and I didn't get wet. Just got wet from the rain.
Riding in the rain (light rain that is :o) is kinda fun. Just have to remember that the brakes don't always grab when the rims are wet so had to be careful on the downhills.

Jean Beetham Smith 07-20-05 06:54 PM

Today I rode home from work for the first time since I fell on vacation and did something to my knee. A week in an immobilizer was not what I'd planned for vacation. I still can't climb stairs well, but this injury will probably force me to become better at spinning. (Frankly, looking on the bright side @&$*@!) But at least I am back riding again and it felt great.

spidercyclist 07-20-05 10:11 PM

I was sick today, but still rode to work. Not a bad ride, no real problems, but work has really been nasty. No help and the help I was getting is going to day-shift. But besides that, I still had a good commute. Have a good night.

ridealot 07-21-05 05:28 AM

Good ride home for the most part. It rained in the afternoon but stopped before I left. Streets were wet, and traffic was a little backed up but not to bad. I had a nice tailwind too.

Humid this morning coming to work. Supposed to be humid and hot on the way home this afternoon.
