My first post here... only started commuting by bike about 2 months so far. Been a rather mild winter here in NYC. Doing the Queens -> Upper East Side in Manhattan commute, about 5 miles 1 way.

Cold this morning, but nothing really bad. Headwinds on the 59th Street Bridge, but better than Friday (felt like I was going backwards with some of those wind gusts...).

My ride is an old Diamondback Sorrento, put slicks on and a cloud 9 comfy seat. No suspension on the bike and I wanted to take the edge off the roads. My first commute with the seat, much better. I'm a slowpoke though, everyone passes me on the bridge (well... except the peds...)

Ugh. We got about 6" of snow on Saturday and I decided to try riding this morning. (City doesn't plow the rail trail.)

Because it has been very cold, the snow hasn't had a chance to sublimate and/or pack down. As a result, it was like riding through sand. I was wobbly and just not having a good time.

Bailed onto a street and headed up to a bus stop. Had to wait about 10 minutes for the next bus to show up, and it was in the single digits (F). I had plenty of leftover heat so I didn't get cold standing there. Put the bike on the bus's bike rack and had an otherwise nice ride in to work.

Guess I'm off the bike again until things clear up a little. Bike will sit here in my cube until then. :)

This morning felt so good. After a week in Bangkok a bit of rain and cool temps felt very good. It took about 10 minutes to get to the office.

fordfasterr 02-27-06 01:30 PM

awesome ride today.

real slow... nursing a slight hangover.. =)

McGillicutty 02-27-06 01:31 PM

Spring is showing up early in the southwest. Must have been over 35F this morning. So warm. Going up to 67F. Even had to take the winter hat off from under my helmet this morning halfway to work. Going to slide on out of here before sunset.

tomg 02-27-06 05:30 PM

2 flats before officially leaving work PM. fixed the first at the office, went about 1 city block, and it was flat again. walked back to work, found that the glue-less patch was the culpret (did not hold), so i threw a new tube on. these, and the rear flat last week, take the fun out of riding, sometimes. once the tire was fixed, i flew!! AM in was fast also. downtown is showing a growth in LowRiders with a new shop sporting impressively designed machines! kind of like rock/roll to rap, i don't quite get the concept, but have not actually ridden one yet either!

toshi 02-27-06 05:41 PM

Rained like hell this morning. I keep fighting the purchase of a rear fender, but I might have to break down and spend the 9 bux.

vrkelley 02-27-06 08:18 PM

Ditto on the rain for the return ride. It rained so hard that peds and homeless people were signalling 2 thumbs up...

carbon copy of the above down to the thinsulate gloves- did wear my neoprene booties over my shoes and my feet were warm, too. 0-10 degF on the way in and about 15 degF on the way home. Strange to see about 150 Canadian geese floating around an outflow pipe into the Charles River- the only place with warm water. Good stiff wind on the ride home made for a wind chill that I am sure was well below 0F.

spidercyclist 02-27-06 11:05 PM

Snow.

luckysnafu 02-28-06 07:02 AM

Very strong headwind all the way home last night, 15-20mph on average with higher gusts. I think I might like riding in the rain better than into the wind ;) This morning was warmer, mid 40's, and I figured it would be sunny again but it is very overcast. Had a good ride in though and made pretty good time. Supposed to be in the 60s this afternoon and hopefully the sun will shine through the clouds for the ride home.

amward 02-28-06 08:00 AM

-12C/10F this morning, with some light snow falling (enough that I pulled out the ski goggles).

Took a detour that I've not tried before in the snow (to pick up some fresh woodfired oven bagels). The stretch between the bakery and work is on a multi-use trail that had been plowed and salted -- at least as nice as the road this morning, and only passed one other person.

Nice ride today! Not much traffic, clear skies and a nice tailwind. Roll off temps were a bit warmer than yesterday by about 6 degrees at 18°F. Today I decided to reach a little deeper into the cycling drawer for a nice Under Armour layer.

Map tester 02-28-06 09:00 AM

Sunny and cool this morn, 37°F. Forcast for this afternoon:

Partly cloudy, with a high near 66. West wind between 10 and 15 mph.

That's a tailwind for me. :D

Sometimes life is rough living in the worst cycling city in America

MyPC8MyBrain 02-28-06 09:03 AM

Record highs are forcast for today... it was 51F on the way in. That's unheard of in Colorado during February. Supposed to get to 70 or so for the ride home.

I'm thinking I'll get lost on the way home for some bonus miles. Gotta start tuning up for the Ride the Rockies tour in June. Probably should start seeking the steeper hills instead of routing around them. The commuter should feel like a rocket without 20 lbs of commuting stuff hanging off of it :)

pinkrobe 02-28-06 09:27 AM

Spring - is nowhere to be seen. Took a new route today at the behest of my wife, and it sucked. I'm going to switch back to my old new route, and not dance in traffic quite so much.

jyossarian 02-28-06 09:52 AM

No commute again today. Working from home and expecting my new bike from UPS today except when I went to check the status at 10:45 am, it hadn't been sent out for delivery yet! Argh! UPS better not bang up my bike or I'm gonna be pi$$ed.

Ok, I've got to ask: What kind of bike?

Nice!

Huge wind and rain last night but this morning was clear and calm. Gorgeous, in fact. I rode the fixie to breakfast with my officemates. One of our staffers is retiring and we had little prework going away party. I'm stuffed with egg and potato right now.

truman 02-28-06 11:19 AM

Weather this am was stunning 55° calmish and clear.

Last night , I polished, cleaned and lubed the drivetrain, must have pedaled and shifted both derailleurs back and forth a dozen times in the stand... perfect.

This morning, the VERY first time I shift small ring to big, the cable slips in the der clamp. So I got to spin on in in the 38t small ring. Didn't feel too bad, actually. It makes the starts from red lights a bit quicker...

And I had a wind shell on, which was too much. Arm warmers woulda sufficed for the first 10 minutes. Was having a nice sauna, by mile 6.

Beautiful

noisebeam 02-28-06 12:47 PM

I rode to work today with the great hope of being caught in an afternoon rainshower on the way home. Unfortunately it now looks like it won't happen.

WOO-HOO! A lovely day here in the SE. 73* crystal clear blue sky and even some courteous cagers :)
Sunset at 6:20something means daylight for the ride home. YAY! :D

mtessmer 02-28-06 03:19 PM

Well, I'm not getting the 50-70 degree weather some of you are getting but I'm enjoying our tropical 34F and sunny skies (it was 17F when I left the house this morning). I had to go to one of my other offices this morning so I had over 30 miles in by lunch time. It's so nice out I'm probably going to take the long way home after work. Bring on spring, I'm ready!

o-dog 02-28-06 04:38 PM

today was my return to the saddle after being out for a week due to illness. temps in the high 30's low 40's for most of the day and some pretty decent winds (around 15MPH from the North).

the ride in was cool... I rode with my new eyewear (Tifosi Forza T-F320's with clear lenses) for the first time today... that'll definitely help protect against bugs and rocks (I've been lucky in that department so far) and I only had a couple minor fogging problems. I left way later than I wanted to but luckily I didn't run into any bad traffic stackups. did encounter a couple tailgaters though. other than that it was a good ride in. I was behind a truck for the last quarter-mile or so, that cut down my wind resistance a lot.

before the ride back I rode around CP for a while. my lock mount broke off at one point, luckily I was three blocks away from my LBS when this happened. they put on a new one no problem and I was good to go. I'm really glad I have a good LBS. rode around for a little while longer, went up and down the PB trail, then headed home through a howling 15MPH headwind. my shifting started getting rough and my chain slipped off about a block away from my house... my first reaction to this was "already? I've only ridden like three times since my last cleaning/lubing." oh well. all in all a good ride today.

tomg 02-28-06 06:18 PM

-no commute today; had to use vac time, or loose it for feb accrue. so i took the day off = no work!
-released the bikeE 'bent this PM and cranked out 15.0 dst, 66mins! nice for a change! love the reactions around this front meuller faired machine, maybe i'll visit the new lowrider shop to compair notes! back to the grind tomorrow :(
-another full month commute, 100% for 2006!

spidercyclist 02-28-06 11:05 PM

Warmer today,it started to melt the snow . I hope the rest of the week is warmer. The ride to work was ok ,But the ride home was nice. Have a good nite .

buzzman 02-28-06 11:09 PM

Charles River ice covered. the ice formed in wild, buckling sheets on portions due to the constant winds from the north west (we are getting the cold air from you guys in Alberta- thanks) the ride in this am was about 13F the ride home a bit more. But much less wind so it felt comfortable. Because I had a surge of feeling good as I left work I did some "telephone sprints" on the way home (picking a pole or a light post and sprinting to the next landmark- another pole or light post). Did a whole bunch of these in a row and wore myself out and seriously bonked about a 1/2 mile from home. Then remembered I'd planned to grocery shop (another 1 mile further). I struggled on to the grocery store and then crawled home with two grocery bags in the milkcrate. Ate like a pig when I got in the house. Between the frigid cold, the wind, the studded tires, all the clothing it feels like I'm working like a dog on the bike. It'll be nice to ride in one day in shorts and a tee shirt and a narrower profile tire.
