First commute of the year today & a new bike (Cannondale Comfort 400). 35F on the way in, 50F (with a headwind) on the way home. Found out that if you don't work out in the wintertime, you pay the price in the spring. Other than a little ice on the bike path though, it was a great ride.

82 degrees and really windy (mostly on the quarter) - good ride.
Severe weather warning this evening - hope it passes by midnight for ride home.
Fixed gears rock!!:)
Enjoy!

Headwind all the way (almost) home. My wife was meeting me today at the 7 mile mark (12 mile commute each way) to give me a break from the 4 mile uphill ride. A car turned into me missing me by inches as I yelled "Hey.... HEY" I jerked to the right and he stopped, I ended up going around him. A woman behind him stopped and asked if I was alright. Luckily it was onyl 1/4 mile to the waiting wife. However, Rear tire was flat as I put the bike in the truck - I must have hit a piece of glass on the shoulder as I avoided the car. Damn...... Still beats a day not commuting!!!!

High 70s on the ride home. A roadie pulled up beside me and we rode together for a few blocks until he turned right and I went left. That was interesting and unusual. Most of the time they'll nod or wave or just ignore me (and other commuters).

Headed down to the basement this morning to find a flat on the bike I'd planned to ride. Joy is being able to choose one of the others without worrying about studded tires. It's nice having lots of bikes.

40F and calm this morning. About 60 this afternoon. Had a whitetail deer run across in front of me this AM, with a truck about a hundred yards away heading toward both of us! All went well.

VermontRides 04-05-05 09:06 PM

gorgeous sunny 35F on the way to work; and for the ride home.....got to wear SHORT sleeves (fresh air touching arms) for the first time since october, put some warmer stuff on at the top of the climb, and didn't have to use the lights at all, nope........tomorrow is actually, possibly going to be in the 60's, yippee....maybe time to get the shimano sandals back out...hmmm

Light traffic, 40F, cloudy with dry roads at 6AM yesterday & today. Sun breaks at lunchtime then rain in the afternoon. Seems like we are locked into a pattern here.

CommuterRun 04-06-05 04:43 AM

This morning: 64 F, SSE 6 mph, mostly cloudy
This afternoon: 75 F, SSW 14 mph, mostly sunny

Commuting through the cold and rainy winter is paying off. Blew past two different other cyclists in the last two mornings on my way to work. :D Always offer a cheery "Good Morning" and a smile. Yesterday I passed one, stopped at my regular break spot for the regular things, then blew past her again. Both were on mountain bikes with knobby ktires. It's very unusual for me to see any other cyclists heading in the same direction I am. Even though I've been assured by some of the cagers in the shop that they're out there.

This afternoon on the way home got signaled by a cop standing on the curb to slow it down as I was passing stopped traffic. Glad he didn't see me <5 minutes later winding it out on that down-hill. :D

My commute was GREAT!!!
It was my first FULL commute to work from home and now I'm all upset because I have to wait 8 hours to ride again.

ridealot 04-06-05 05:18 AM

Very nice commute on the way home last night. Wind at my back again! Clear skies and a tempature around 77F.

Ride in this morning was good. Windy, and it seemed dusty for some reason. There was a lot of dirt on the road and the cars kept kicking it up. Found out up the road was a street sweeper just sweeping the dirt from the curb out into the middle of the lane.

Rixtory 04-06-05 06:24 AM

Awesome Ride this morning - Though I realized that when I got to work, my flashing light had fallen off the back of my rack trunk at some point on the ride. Another good reason to explain to my wife why I need to make another trip to my LBS. :D

clevernamehere 04-06-05 07:22 AM

Great ride this am.
Last night I took off the studded tires & put the semi-slicks back on (ahhhh!).

1st ride (ever) with clippless pedals (my new Crank Bros. Eggbeaters)! Tried them out on a short spin last night & didn't kill myself so I thought I'd try the commute with them. At the risk of jinxing myself... I didn't even fall! In some ways I wish I would have fallen... I know it's part of the clippless pedal club initiation that I have to fall over at least once at a stop light with witnesses... it would have been nice to get it over with during my morning commute when there are fewer people around. :)

Also my fastest ride of the year even though I'm fighting a bad cold. It helps that the snow & ice are gone.

The ball game was great Monday afternoon, our team won with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. My Dad and I scored some great seats on the first level, enjoyed a hotdog and some lemonade. The ride home was nice and relaxing.

A storm front passed through yesterday and brought with it some very high winds. The ride in was a bit of a slalom course dodging all of the branches and debris that was moved around. The temps were in the low 30s and no wind. There were three others out on bikes this morning.

TheAnalogKid 04-06-05 08:02 AM

I had a good commute this morning and it helped that I got a decent air pump and fully inflated my knobbies for a faster, smoother ride. My legs thanked me too.
Great weather, a little on the cold side though but I made it into work 20 minutes early and I feel great!

I also got my first "Nice Pants!!" from a passing car this year.

vtjim 04-06-05 08:14 AM

Having some great commute weather lately. Mid 30s in the morning, 50s in the afternoon. Sunny, crisp air. Hardly any wind. The ice is off the lake so the aquatic birds are back. Great blue herons, cormorants, ducks. Not to mention Trail Hotties. :)

I should change my avatar.

Maybe I should rethink my wardrobe strategy! :)

So, what are you thinking of for your new avatar? I'd like to try to copy it :D

The ride was great. Warm enough to ditch the knee warmers. :)

About a mile from home I looked in my mirror and saw another commuter about 1/2 block back and though I might have a riding partner for part of the ride to work. I slowed a little so he could catch up but he turned onto a side street that comes out at the intersection I was approaching. When I got to the intersection he was 1/2 block ahead of me and hauling ***. I guess he was late for work. :p

balto charlie 04-06-05 09:24 AM

warm warm warm, finally. shorts were in order for the great ride.

barb 04-06-05 09:48 AM

Beautiful sunrise this morning over the mountains; light white fluffy clouds. This was a great morning to commute in by bicycle. No flats and fully inflated tires made for a faster ride. Should be good tonight too.

Ran a red light in front of a police last night ("T" intersection). Nothing happened. Red lights on that street are frequently treated as stops signs. All the lights are for a single large plant entrances and there's hardly any traffic at night so it's tolerated.

No guard dog chasing me last night.

Warm and sunny this morning. No wind. Wonderful ride. Forgot my helmet... was wondering why my head felt naked. Saw 3 commuters and 2 older folks on bike (don't know where they were going). Also someone who commutes on Roller Blades (second time I see him). All this is pretty cool since my commute is outside usual traffic hours. There are probably more already.

Violineb 04-06-05 10:14 AM

The commute these past days was brutal. Especially for April :p Huge ammount of wind, patches of ice and cold to boot :p But with persistance you can do anything :)

I guess thatīs Iceland for you. :-/

Tree Trunk 04-06-05 10:32 AM

I am also experiencing the simple joy of wearing shorts and no layers on the commute this week. Great weather!

2 weeks without a car to use as alternative transportation. It felt to wave goodbye to the old piece of junk as Victory Auto Wreckers took it away. I was wishing I had the car this morning -- raging headache when I woke up. After taking 3 Motrin and catching another 15 winks, the headache was tolerable and I was able to enjoy the commute.

moxfyre 04-06-05 10:54 AM

Today was an absolutely beautiful commute. I rode my road bike as I'm going on a group ride this evening. I wore shorts and it felt great, if anything slightly too warm. :)

GTcommuter 04-06-05 10:58 AM

My first morning commuting on a tandem. I found an old two-seater at my parents house and talked a bike commuter friend from school into bike-pooling with me. Not a bad ride once we figured out how to stop and start without falling over. That thing flies on the strait aways. We took the bike path in this morning but will probably take city streets home this afternoon. It was a fun experiment, but makes it hard to coordinate schedules and I doubt I'll be doing it on a regular basis. Got lots of stares and honks from the cagers, though.

Aw, too bad, Tree Trunk... Lost the car and the title game... :D

Beautiful weather in NC: 75 degrees under Carolina Blue skies...

...Lovin' it!

LOL..lucky for Sean May and the Heels that the refs only called the fouls one way!! But I can't blame the refs for it all. Illinois blew three opportunities in the last minute.

Make sure that Carolina weather stays nice. I'll be there May 18-21 to ride the Mitchell ride.

caloso 04-06-05 12:18 PM

Came up on two fellow commuters this morning. Very nice to see. It's such a beautiful time of year to ride you wonder why the streets aren't packed with bikes.

super-douper 04-06-05 03:24 PM

I'm moving in a couple weeks, new commute will be approx 15miles each way. I did it yesterday after work, weather was great, route was pretty good....did it in 45mins (this one was only 13 miles). felt great to ride that far after work.

now....to find an alternative for that 1 nasty part of my ride. Its a street with narrow lanes that crosses over a freeway. So that means, 1 freeway onramp, then narrow bridge, then another freeway onramp. I think I found a better street to cross at using maps.google.com's new satellite image maps....I think I found a street that goes under the freeway and has no onramps. WOOHOO!!!
